Please re-read your statements. Do you see anything wrong with them?

How ****ed up is this logic?
You can be the most selfless, giving, generous, good-hearted person on Earth.
If you don't believe in Christ you're going to hell.

In a way it is obligated devotion. Christians believe in the punishment those that defect in the "afterlife" (which I do not believe in) and the radical Muslims kill their children on Earth. Clearly one is horrible compared to the other, but I don't approve of this message at all.

Believe in god or burn in hell.

hypothetical here... If you are a true believer of Christianity then you have to be believe that if someone does not except Jesus as your lord and savior then you will suffer ETERNAL hellfire. That means if your child loses that faith he/she is condemned to hell forever. If I was a man who had this faith I and loved my children. I would brainwash them and make sure they stay with their faith because I would honestly believe my kids are going to hell forever and I'm sure that's the last thing a parent wants.

Regardless of the particularities surrounding baptism and your personal construct of choice, the fact remains that raising ones family attending church services, saying prayers to Christ, engendering a close affinity to Jesus, enrolling them in Sunday School, taking them to church retreats, and related activities, in reality inhibits your child from having a 'choice' in any meaningful way. Of course, the possibility exists that ones child will choose to leave the church/religious institution (which is becoming more common), but the more exposure to a religious framework ones child receives, the less likely that is.

Such activities are innocuous, and indeed, 'normal' to theists, but to atheists such practices are nothing short of crass indoctrination.

I'm a christian who believes in the bible, and I have a different idea about a non-believer suffering eternal hellfire.

But, I think not raising them in that environment keeps them away from religion at all?

So you don't believe in parts of the Bible?

I think this question is a little simplistic. People employ interpretive frameworks and negotiate religious beliefs in different ways. To equate a different understanding to rejection is simply unfair.

I think this thread began with the purpose of shedding light on the obvious, which was the tendency by certain posters in D&D to repeatedly denigrate certain faith-groups, and rather than doing that its turning into another D&D religion debate.....

Religion is irrelevant. Just be good to each other, and good to yourself.

No, I do believe those parts of the bible. I disagree with what you seem to believe they mean.

If you've never read Love Wins: A Book About Heaven, Hell, and the Fate of Every Person Who Ever Lived, then you could read that to get a different idea than what you seem to be implying the bible is saying.

If you aren't familiar with Rob Bell, he's a Christian pastor with a lot of insight and biblical study that I like reading and thinking about.

While that sounds good in theory, many religions believe that is not enough and your fate will be eternal damnation.

you better hope you're right if that's the approach you're going with

Oh mighty BigTexx...thank you so much for warning me.

I'm a Christian...I just believe that my God would be embarrassed by a lot of the hate and lack of compassion that my so-called "brothers in Christ" spew out on a daily basis.

Shame on all of them. They're the ones who should look over their shoulders.

I feel the same way for the religious folks. I hope they find their afterlife, otherwise they wasted their lives with dogma vs. human experience.

Why because your version of god is nicer? Why does one have to assume that if there is a higher power that it has to be benevolent?

This thread was meant less about a religion itself, but rather the idea that specific religion is what you make of them at the end of the day.

I read somewhere awhile back that the three Abrahamic religions follow different focuses and personal intent.

One is about works through legalism. Another is about faith. And the third is about servitude.

After everything's said and done comparing and debating, it's whatever that floats your boat.
