When you consider the extra money he can get by extending here, plus the lack of state income tax, he'd be leaving an incredible amount of money on the table. All of this to be Mr. NY, when he'd have to get in line behind Melo and the Knicks, plus whoever the Yankees sign. Oh, and the first time he misses 10 free throws in a playoff game, the NY media will crush him.

The question is why WOULDN'T he want to stay. This city is a great place to live and if we add another star of two it would be an ideal basketball team.

Im thinking I would much rather take a flyer on the Drummond kid and rebuild like this team should have done several years ago. Renting Howard for a year just doesn't appeal to me, but what do I know.

Nonetheless, could he not sign a non bird right deal with Brooklyn with an opt out after one year, at which point he would be able to sign a bird's right deal with them?

    Serious question??

The new CBA is set up to financially penalize players for changing teams. Once he is in Houston, he's going to have to take a ****-ton less money to go somewhere else, even in sign and trade.

As much noise as he wants to make now about not resigning, when it comes down to actually leaving money on the table, the math makes him leaving much less likely.

He's already shown he isn't willing to leave money on the table. Otherwise he would have not signed the opt-in at the trade deadline, been traded to LA or Houston, and then walked this off season to sign in NJ/Brooklyn.

we can show him what a great city Houston is, and then more importantly, we can win. you have to believe that morey is going to go all in if we have howard for this season and id like to think that we're going to make a pretty deep run in the playoffs. and the better run that we make the harder it is going to be for him to turn away. i cant see him walking away from a western conference finals team if we can make it that far. plus by then we'll be able to offer him the most $$$ anyway

Haven't checked to see if the new cba changed it much, but it takes more than one year to be eligible for even a early-bird. Too busy to look it up, maybe Bima or Carl can comment.

Howard would have to walk away from $25 to 30 million bucks. Add to that no state income taxes, and the pleasures of Houston, where many players live during the off-season, and it would be very, very hard to walk away. That's why he doesn't want to come here. He knows that if he does, he'll probably be with the Rockets for the next several years. As has been pointed out, when a max contract with Houston ended, he would only be 31. He would have more options then, but also have tens of millions of dollars socked away that would go up in a puff of smoke if he splits after a year. Endorsements? He's getting major endorsements wherever he goes. I don't think that's a big issue.
