Nobody is every guaranteed to leave.

However if he DOES leave, then at least we had 1 good season where we could be a contender.
AND THEN we'd be able to gut the team and tank hard.

Howard is win win win surely? Win for the tankers (either we win with Howard, or tank after he flees); win for the starpics (they get a star and even the slimmest glimmer of hope that he will sign on again); win for the organisation (we get a star who will play in the all-star game, and puts us on the map in a big way for a season).

I can't see the downside really. Giving up a 5 and 8 pick (who will most likely combine to bust - based on historical evidence) doesn't seem like much.

    Stupid question -

Since the Rockets potentially owe next year's pick to New Jersey, am I right in thinking that any trade of #14 has to occur as rights to the player after the pick has already been made? Or am I confused/thinking of old rules.

As long as we hold a pick in this year's or next year's first round, then no. If we ship off the #16 and #14, then your thought process is correct. BUT-- if we acquire a late first (can be frequently had for cash) or somebody's first next year (or buy back our pick from Brooklyn some how), then it wouldn't be required.

This is exciting. I don't get why many of you are hating on the bosh, melo, Howard, deron, etc to the rockets. First off, it's damn good marketing. Secondly, our management is doing whatever it takes to acquire the assets to acquire a star. Gee at least theyre doing something. If all falls through.

    2012
    Dwight/motie/camby
    Scola/pat
    parsons/bud/morris
    Kmart/lee
    Deron/Teague?/lull?

would at least give us an chance to compete w/ the thunder for the west champs.

If Dwight is traded here. We would have a legit shot at deron signing a 5 yr contract w/ us. He would definitely consider coming here even if Dwight is a one year rental. I believe deron is getting impatient and want to win a championship now. From there deron can convince Dwight to stay. I highly doubt deron would want to sign w/ the nets And wait for Howard. He would sign w/ the rockets. We have The $ for it too. I'm sure this is what morey Is thinking right now.

Plus the All-Star game will be here next year, good exposure

LOL if Dwight comes here he will techincally have been involved on the team that hosted the 2012 and 2013 All-Star Games in back to back years

Just heard on Mike & Mike that Charlotte has been shopping their #2 pick
    Via Chad Ford
Probably not relevant to the Rockets...actually if Charlotte has been openly shopping it I'm willing to bet they've had a few calls from Morey.

He did talk about the Rockets...nothing new...just that the plan MAY be to get Dwight plus free up cap space to also sign Dwill. Gave it a 15-20% chance of happening.

    Yup.

Ford said Howard is unlikely to be traded on draft night, unless it's to the Rockets.

Said he'd put the odds at around 15-20%.

Said the Rockets are "really active" :))) and already have other deals on the table to create cap space to go after Deron Williams (Martin to Minny?).

Since when have the Rockets tanked under Alexander's ownership? I really think some of you are forgetting just 2 years ago we lost our superstar and ended up with consecutive 14th draft picks. Do you guys truly believe Morey and Alexander are going to let this team tank a season? Morey will restock this team in a hurry without a superstar and we will be right back on the mediocrity treadmill b****ing about never losing enough to rebuild with high draft picks and never being good enough to make a playoff run.

The way we lose big time in this deal is if we trade for Dwight, he comes and signs an extension. Then he starts having back problems. We will have max money tied up in a hurt player. Sound familiar? I was all for Howard, even as a rental, until he went down with his back. I have had two surgeries for ruptured disc and can tell you from experience he will never be quite the same.

One thing about the back... at least you get him for one year, with your doctors before you offer a Max deal. I assume he gets a medcal with any proposed trade. (Also, Les knows a thing or two about insurance, but it could still be a cap killer)

(repost from another thread but this one is more appropriate)

    Questions?

If we make the Howard deal..

    1. I assume we have the leg up in offering him the most money next year over the free market, what is that figure? (is it 25 or 30)

    2. Assuming that that number is significant wouldn't we hold some cards to get a Sign And Trade deal that might include something like 2 #1's?

    3. What position would The Nets be in next year to make that deal a. with Deron b, without Deron?

    4. How much salary would we have to take back in a Howard Sign And Trade?
Would we have huge money available to others someone in 2013?

    4. If Howard walks for a free agent deal (for less money) how much cap money would we have to play in next year's impressive free agency?

    Yes.

No. That amount cannot be offered in a sign and trade under the new CBA.
