Thats exactly what i'm trying to say. Lets stop focusing on drafting undersized pf's and worry about getting a superstar wing that could take us to the next level.
Thats true. What i'm arguing is is that now that 1 superstar that you named doesn't need to be the center that everyone thinks we need. It HAS to be a wing player though because thats just the type of league that we're in now.
Dallas had the better bigs and they won.The heat had better bigs (Bosh outplayed Ibaka and Perkins sucked) and they won. Dwight is MILES better than any of those guys. Think about how big of an advantage a dominant big would give you.
And that's where I'm saying you're WRONG. Two elite players at ANY positions, surrounded by solid role players, are enough to get it done.
Bosh wasn't the reason the Heat won the Finals. And I mean we may never again see another player like Dirk. And I do like Tyson Chandler a great deal that would be my ideal center if I was the Thunder. But again you dont have to gut the team for Chandler like you would Howard. Thats somebody who can give you great defense and rebounds.
but Lebron still won the championship right? Dwight got swept because his teammates, such as Courtney Lee in game 1, missed in the clutch. Know your history.
So Dwight lost 4 games because Courtney Lee missed a layup in one game? What does that have to do with knowing my history? And did Lebron win with a DOMINANT big man? No he had chris bosh who knocked down enough mid range jumpers to space the floor and get to the rim every so often. Something we can groom DMo to do.
Neither 1 of y'all know history. Dwight didn't get swept. Anyone thinking a dominant big man wouldn't keep these slasher type, drive to the rim wings out of the paint is insane. And lol at using the Clippers as an example. How did they do in the playoffs?
Plus, Blake isn't on Dwight's level.(Maybe one day but not now.) Dwight can do everything Blake can do on offense(catch and finish, dunk, maybe a hook shot.) while Blake can't do anything Dwight can do defensively. (rebounds, blocks, steals, low post D.)
I should change the title to you dont NEED a SUPERSTAR big man to contend. But i mean you do need competence at the post positions i.e. someone to block shots and rebound (Chandler)
Isn't it the year of the nice coaches. Stan Van knows it is. Time for McHale to get nicer, this is no coincidence.
Getting a superstar big will always be more important that getting a superstar wing. The Heat won because Lebron played like a big man posting up on the block. Ibaka and perkins sucked in the finals because they had to guard Battier as a strech 4 out in the perimeter. If the Thunder had a legit post presence such as Gasol, KG, Bynum posting up against Battier, it would force the Heat counter with Haslem, or Joel Anthony. So in short, yes a star/superstar big is crucial to win championships. Look at all the past champions. They all had big men that could post up or play great interior defense.
Even if you leave out Shaq's domination in the earlier part of the last decade, star big men are importnt. Last few champions and their star bigs: 2007 Spurs: Tim Duncan 2008 Celtics: Kevin Garnett 2009 Lakers: Pau Gasol (plus Bynum in limited minutes) 2010 Lakers: Pau Gasol (plus Bynum in limited minutes) 2011 Mavs: Dirk Nowitzki 2012 Heat: Chris Bosh (with LeBron playing as a post up big in all but name) Yeah, sure, there's no more room for big men in this wing-dominated game.
