Then you might as well stop giving any money to any American charity because there are worse things happening in Mexico. Oh never mind, don't bother with Mexico because there are worse things happening in Asia. Oh, forget them too. Just send all your money to Africa. They're probably on top of the list when it comes to people who have had far worse things happen to them.
So yeah, we should stop caring about the rest of the world. Just Africa people.

Um, sorry, but what happened to your wife is not even in the same ballpark. I get it...you don't care enough to follow it, but being "called fat" was pretty much the small of it.

I think this has partly gotten so much press, because "bullying" in general is a pretty big topic right now. There was a documentary about it recently. It's a bigger issue in society right now than five year olds learning to keep their hands to themselves. If this brings more attention to it, fine by me.

I misread ima's post and thought his wife was being hit on by the 5 yo. Though it would have been a much bigger story had it been his wife was hitting on the kid. Thread worthy. Pic worthy, maybe. How's the wife's mugshot look ima??? Does she look good in an orange jumpsuit? Don't answer that.

I watched the bus thing twice. Not condoning it. But this was basic teasing, piling on that kids do. Each kid taking it a little further than the one before. Mean stuff. And, thankfully, generally being taken seriously now. But...not beyond the pale for 10 yo's. These could be good kids. And teachers, coaches, bus monitors etc need to be able to deal with this stuff. They certainly have a better shot at it than other kids who are likely to be picked on...

Nonetheless....I'm happy for the lady. Kids were rotten. She reaped a reward. The dot.com crowd found its diversion for the day. And...yes...the wrongs of bullying were highlighted. All good.

Hmmm...I want to clarify if we're seeing the same thing.

Is this what you are considering basic 10yo teasing?

You're makin it silly. The line we try to draw is between people really struggling and a woman like her which just got mobbed by a few kids and isn't living in a crappy situation. Of course there are always people that have it worse, but as long as it goes to a people that needs it there's no need to compare the level of poorness or struggle.

Guess in the end it is just a perfect example of how life speaks it truth to us.

The truth that everything in it can be so right and be so wrong, both at the same time.

Those kids need a fierce spanking. Or someone needs to rape them brutally.

It's not the fact that the lady is getting money while there is more needy people out there or people enduring more hardship that is the problem - there is always someone more needy or someone who has suffered or will suffer more than you or anyone you have ever known or will ever know about. It's the fact that people believe an issue like bullying is being dealt with by throwing money at a victim. The media makes the whole thing worse by focusing more on the amount of giving more than the problem itself, but, hey, that's what moves papers and grabs page-views and there is nothing more righteous than looking out for your own bottom-line.

I'm glad that people believe this lady deserves a vacation. But to pretend that America cares about tackling the problem of bullying because people have gotten together to give $500,000(?) is disingenuous. I think this also highlights a problem private charitable giving: the high potential for extreme mis-allocation of resources toward individuals or sensational occurrences over long-term causes.

at the end of the day it shouldn't be the kids apologizing to her, she should thank those kids for insulting her and making her rich.

Like i mentioned earlier, she did say this was a one time thing and that the kids normally aren't that way. If that's true, then I dont think it's right for her to keep so much money. She's getting it because it seemed like this was an everyday thing she has had to endure.

I'd take the vacations offered and some spending money, then help out others with the rest.

I don't buy that. There has to be taxes on the money.

Oh no, it was disproportionate for people to give her the money based on a single incident by a bunch of restless or bored minors at a job that she could have easily left for another one. I also think it relieves the district, the parents and one other adult in the incident - the bus monitor - from the responsibility of conditioning that behavior out of the kids.

But once she gets the money she should definitely keep it. The most responsible and "charitable" thing a person can do for society is take care of herself and not be a continued burden to others' resources or sympathies; if she quits her job or takes a similarly paying but less stressful on part-time, invests wisely and lives modestly enough this cash could probably do the trick.

A person can give $13k / yr to anyone as a gift and avoid tax. I believe that tax is based on the sender as opposed to the recipient, so as long as all the money came from senders each giving less than $13k (and who didn't gift money to someone else to total above $13k), I think it might be tax-free. I don't know who or if anyone is actually doing the accounting there, though.
