I haven't seen the original movie since it came out in theaters back in the day, but I remember not thinking highly of it even as a kid. I need to review it as I'm not sure how the movie would translate now. One thing I'm happy is their leaving his helmet on the whole movie and giving it the darker grit treatment. As far as the director, Peter Travis, I really know nothing about as I haven't seen Vantage Point and that was his biggest film to date. Thoughts?
I don't recall there being a film series as opposed to the Stallone/Schneider one-off; it seems like this should be called a remake. Man, for an Oscar-nominated writer Stallone was a very pathetic step-and-a-half behind Schwarzenegger; particularly when he tried this futuristic crap along with Demolition Man two or three years after Running Man, Total Recall and T2. Rather than trying to wring another $20 million out of the same two characters, guy should have been doing cameos in Scorsese and Tarantino flicks.
Without the irony and satire it misses the mark. It needed to be more a mix between Robocop and Brazil than just a run of the mill action movie.
Oh yes because if one character deserved a new movie it is Dredd Please just make a new movie and stop recycling old ones
Judge Dredd is a comic book character. The Stallone movie didn't get it right, this one looks about the same.
Hahhah only it's set in the future with flying cars and ****... I know the nerds are gonna say that this movie was in production long before The Raid came out but as for the stand-alone trailer?? It looks awfully a lot like The Raid... The Raid is the best action movie of the year by far....
"So . . . Judge Dredd is taking over the future version of The Carter?" - Nino Brown I am less than impressed. I might see it though . . .1.25$ theater LOL Rocket River
Wow that looks really bad. I kept waiting for him to break out and say "damnit Jim I'm a doctor, not a judge" Does he also sleep with the helmet on?
I haven't seen a Judge Dredd comic in over 20 years, but if I recall correctly, it shared many of the same qualities of other late 70s-early 80s crime fighting/vigilante stories (Dirty Harry, Death Wish, Dark Knight Returns, Punisher, Robocop) that bordered on the neo-fascist (although TDKR and Robocop had a bit of satire to balance things out). Criminals aren't just criminals - they're all homicidal sociopaths. Drugs are actually the devil. Citizens are helpless and the law enforcement system never works. So the source material is a bit of a time capsule and probably isn't of much use (in its original form) for inspiring a decent movie. So all that's left is the silly costumes and a catchy name. But if you add explosions and special effects, you might have something with the potential to make 200 million off of several million stupid teenage boys who still think "The Trees" by Rush is the most profound song ever written. I don't think I'll be paying to watch this....
