John Culberson blocking metro rail funding

Yeah, it's called a MonoRAIL!

 

Is there a plan for dedicated train right-of-way in Houston where it doesn't conflict with road traffic? or one that goes faster than traffic speed?

 

educate yourself. Did you know that Curitiba, Brazil has a bus rapid transit system? Probably not -- go check it out and educate your mind.

 

Is there a reason why the rail was never elevated to begin with? I've done a google search, but couldn't find anything more than opinions. Is there a concrete reason? I never like the idea of having it ground level. Was it money, popularity, lack of infrastructure?

The county doesn't need more rail, it needs busses. Rail would be fine if it ran from the burbs to major downtown destinations, and from there people could take buses/walk/bike. But Metro refuses to address that issue; instead would rather demolish the ghetto along Elgin.

 

From what I've read, it was to get it built quicker and with less cost.

 

That works and there are cities with effective rapid bus transit. (Mexico has several cities with rapid bus transit)

But it fails for the same reason that you criticize rail. To have effective bus transit you have to create direct lines with few stops that cross the whole city but with a suburban heavy city, that is nearly impossible. To duplicate rapid bus transit in South American countries, you would end up spending similar levels of money to finance so many buses and then finance the transportation infrastructure to allow them to bypass traffic.

Busses will never work in Houston on a large scale until riding the bus becomes equally fast if not faster than riding in a car and to pull that off would be as large an undertaking as building rail.

Another reason why Houston looks like one giant strip mall connected by freeways.

 

Wtf. Do you even comprehend what you write? Build dedicated lanes? What a joke. Just build a rail instead then they are more efficient.

 

The town was built in response to the market place. People love convenience, everything they need, close by.
