I hate to draw anyone into the thread with the promise of pizza and candy---yay! free goodies!---but I can't listen in on the podcast here at work; can someone listen and post the high (or low) lights? Mods, feel free to kill this thread if someone wants to find the old thread with Morey and his 610 SR visits. http://houston.cbslocal.com/2012/06/21/rockets-look-to-move-up-in-draft/
Why can't Morey just tell the press to shove it during this part of the year. He's just going to give lip service.
Most of it was the same talk we've been hearing about rebuilding while being competitive... so here is a paraphrased version. It gets interesting near the end, however nothing really big that we shouldn't expect him to say: Trade talk to move up active in league... Talked about Monte in Europe and said he looks pretty good and stepped forward in rebounding. He's young in his early 20s. This year set record for Euroleague in rebounding. We have high hopes for him that he can help him out down the road. It's hard to get on the floor with our team so we don't know when he'll help. Should the Rockets stay the course? Morey ackknowledged we need to add a significant player. What we're trying to do is maximize trades and draft to rebuild. Every year from here on we're going to keep trying to turn that corner. It's the second year without Yao and people feel like it's a long time. This year there's more flexibility... We recognize we need to take a step forward and we're working hard to do that. Planning to bring Sam Dalambert back. Has prtially garunteed contract. Was effective despite inconsistancy.PG situation: We've played both lowry and dragic together and we'll continue to add good players who can help us win. Goran and Kyle were our two best players last year. Obviously Kyle has some frustrations from last year and we plan to work with him on those.
By sending him to the team that will get us the best ROI. Thanks for the fix. A junkie like myself will take the lame heroin with the good. Of course, I'm probably o.d.'ing and don't know it.
He didnt really say anything special, 1.DMO will be here this 100% this year. 2.They are trying to move up in the draft, but wouldnt rule out trading picks for future picks. 3.Lowry is great with Dragic, want to keep both (mouth service) 4.Always looking for ways to improve team. And has had alot of trade discussions with teams wanting picks.
ClutchFans.net @clutchfans "Our first focus is to try to trade up," said Daryl Morey on 610 today. Said there is a lot of trade discussion in the league right now.
at this point, i don't care much what he says. His next move, and/or what he does on draft night will tell me all i need to know.
It felt surprising that he would say that they were planning on bringing Samuel Dalembert back ... but then I realized there isn't really a way to answer that other than how he did. Sure, they're planning on bringing him back ... I guess... maybe.... unless they see something better in free agency or can deal his very tradeable contract.
The one thing that I found interesting was this comment This screams the end of "Solid" veteran players. That sounds like tanking but I'm just being optimistic.
I take it to mean that they have all the veterans they want for the time being. This team needs potential stars now, no more Marcus Cambys or Shane Battiers. I don't think it means tanking, though. Just that the guys they're looking to trade for or sign are not going to be 28+ years old.
I'm surprised you didn't think this last season, when we picked high-risk/high-reward Morris over Leonard, and then an ex-top-5 graded prospect in Motiejunas whose stock dropped. Motiejunas easily has all-star potential, which is insanely high upside for pick 20.
You're being optimistic. Daryl has already rolled the dice with the likes of TWill and will continue to do so if the opportunity arises, but don't hold your breath on a free fall tank. On Camby and Dally, viable 7 footers with NBA skills are kinda are to find, so the Rockets can't go youth movement at the 5 like they really have an abundance of options. Although D-Mo is a step in that direction (I see him more as a swing 4/5 though, depending on matchups).
I think what he was trying to say there was: "We're looking for a superstar..... you guys seen any by chance?"
