The Crash Hessman show makes a stop in Nashville.

After virtually nothing happened, Corpus provided the breakthrough.

California League < Carolina League....

Mike Foltynewicz outshines one of the top pitching prospects in all of baseball. Well, yeah, it was an All-Star game.

Greeneville was the last Astros affiliate to begin play. How did Adrian Houser fare?

Encore, Carlos Correa!

Recap

OKC dropped Nashville 10-6 as Mike Hessman and Jimmy Paredes both went 2-5 with a homer and 3 RBI. Paredes' 6th came in the 1st and was of the 2-run variety, and Hessman became the first in the organization to 20 homers with his 3-run shot in the 3rd. Angel Sanchez, Carlos Corporan, and Jake Goebbert drove in 1 apiece. This also happened:

I can now say I've seen it all...Angel Sanchez was intentionally walked
— Brooks Parker (@Subber10) June 20, 2012

Wes Musick allowed 2 runs on 2 hits, walked 2, and struck out 1 in the 1st before leaving with an injury. Sergio Perez came on and allowed 2 runs on 4 hits in 4 innings. Adalberto Flores allowed a run on 2 hits in the 6th, striking out 1. Mickey Storey pitched a 1-2-3 7th for the win, and Enerio Del Rosario allowed a solo homer in the 9th and walked 1 in the final 2 innings.

After 11 scoreless innings, Corpus Christi finally broke through for 4 in the top of the 12th to finally put away San Antonio. Arcenio Leon kept the Missions at 0. He got the win by a perfect 11th and a perfect 12th, striking out 2. Kody Hinze, who went 3-5, finally put the Hooks on the board by poking a 1-out single to left that scored Jonathan Singleton. Drew Locke, who advanced to 3rd on the play, scored on an error that allowed Jair Fernandez to reach base. And finally, Jonathan Villar trickled a 2-run single through the infield. Jarred Cosart had his best outing since that tweet, as he allowed 5 hits in 7 shutout innings, walking 1 and striking out 8. Henry Villar pitched the next 3 innings, allowing 2 hits and fanning 4.

The Carolina League All-Stars thrashed the California League's All-Stars 9-1 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. A George Springer groundout in the 1st allowed Billy Hamilton to score the Cali League's only run. Bobby Doran got tagged with the loss as he allowed 3 runs on 3 hits in the 4th.

In Charleston, South Carolina, the Legends were well-represented in the SAL All-Star game. But a late rally fell just short as they were able to get 2 in the 9th, but nothing else, as they ultimately fell 3-2 to the North. Zach Johnson started at DH and went 0-3 with a strikeout. Matt Duffy was 2-2 as the starting 3B, and Delino DeShields went 0-2 with a walk and a K as the starting 2B. Mike Foltynewicz was the South's starting pitcher, and he struck out 4 in 2 perfect innings. Carlos Quevedo allowed an unearned run on 2 hits and struck out 2 in the 7th.

Tri-City jumped out to a 1-0 lead in Vermont, then allowed 7 unanswered to the Lake Monsters. A late rally fell short as the ValleyCats lost 7-4. Andrew Aplin was 2-3 and scored on an error in the 3rd for the opening run of the game. Emilio King went 2-4 with a double. Joe Sclafani had a 2-run double in the 9th, and Jarrod McKinney had an RBI groundout in the inning. Aaron West made his debut, as he tossed 3 scoreless, allowing a hit, walking 1, and fanning 2. Juan Minaya threw a scoreless 4th, then the wheels fell off as he allowed 4 runs (1 inherited) in the 5th. Tom Shirley allowed the 5th run (unearned) in the 5th, then went on to throw 2 2/3 innings, allowing a hit and striking out 3. Kenny Long allowed 2 in the 8th in his debut.

Greeneville couldn't quite complete the comeback, as they dropped the season opener 4-2 to Johnson City. Brian Blasik, an undrafted free agent from Dayton, went 2-4 with 2 doubles, one of which went for an RBI. He scored while Mike Martinez grounded into a double play. Marc Wik also went 2-4. Adrian Houser had a no-hitter going for 4 2/3 innings, then he got wild, which allowed C.J. McElroy (son of former reliever Chuck, a standout football player at Clear Creek, and a former UH-commit) to score. Houser went 5 innings, allowing that run on 2 hits, walked 4, and struck out 1. Zach Hardoin allowed a solo shot to Mike Knox in the 6th, and Christian Garcia and Mike Hauschild allowed a run in the 7th and 8th innings, respectively.

The GCLstros settled for a split with the Cardinals, as they lost 5-2. Brett Phillips went 2-4 with an RBI triple in the 3rd and Luis De La Rosa had an RBI forceout in the 7th. Carlos Correa went 0-3 with a walk and a strikeout. Pitching-wise, Brandon Culbreth allowed 3 runs on 6 hits in 4 innings, walking 1 and striking out 1. Agapito Barrios allowed 2 runs in his 3 innings of relief.

The Academy blew a 6-3 lead to the Mariners by allowing them to score 4 in the top of the 8th. Mesac Laguna homered in the 2nd (2). Randy Cesar, Yoel Silfa (both 2-4) and Luis Reynoso (1-4) drove in 1 apiece. Luis Abad allowed 3 runs on 2 hits in 2 innings, walking 4 and striking out 3. Rayderson Chevalier allowed 2 runs on 3 hits in 5 2/3 innings, striking out 5, and Victor Mesa got nailed with the L, allowing 2 runs in 1 1/3 innings.

Game Scores

Wes Musick: N/A
Jarred Cosart: 74 (2nd highest in Corpus this season)
Aaron West: 58
Adrian Houser: 56
Brandon Culbreth: 38
Luis Abad: 39

Brian Blasik, 2B, Greeneville
2-4, 2 2B, RBI, R

A nice debut for the undrafted free agent. I don't know how he slipped through the cracks in the late rounds, but I hope this guy turns out to be quite the find for the Astros.

2.

[IMG] [IMG]

Mike Hessman, 1B, Oklahoma City
2-5, 3-R HR (20)

Hessman is the first player in the entire Astros organization to 20 homers. Do what you want with that info.

Jimmy Paredes, 2B
2-5, 2-R HR (6), 3 RBI

6:1 K:BB ratio? No bueno. If only he'd fix his approach; the Astros would HAVE to find a spot for him on the 25-man roster.

1.

Corpus Christi Pitchers: Jarred Cosart, Henry Villar, Arcenio Leon

Cosart: 7 IP, 5 H, BB, 8 K, 74 Game Score
Villar: 3 IP, 2 H, 4 K
Leon: W, 2 IP, 2 K

Hey, now there's the Jarred Cosart we've all been expecting. A fantastic job from all 3 pitchers. Holding an opponent scoreless for 12 innings is not an easy feat whatsoever.

Honorable Mentions

Aaron West, P, Tri-City: If this baseball thing doesn't work out, he definitely has a future in our country's intel department, whether it's with the FBI or CIA.

Tom Shirley, P, Tri-City: Hope he can get moving quickly as a bullpen arm. Must remain healthy this year.

Kody Hinze: For finally putting an end to that nonsense in San Antonio.

Mike Foltynewicz, P, Lexington: The fact that he did what he did in an All-Star game shouldn't cheapen it. He was doing it against some of the best hitters in his league.

Yeah, not the way to start off the season, Juan Minaya. Jimmy Howick also had himself a pretty rough night. Victor Mesa blew it late for the Academy.

Looking Ahead

OKC and Nashville will play the 2nd game of their series at 7:05. In a matchup of journeymen, Brian Bass will oppose Seth McClung.

Corpus and San Antonio will play game 3 of a 4-game series at 7:05. Ross Seaton will get the start for the Hooks against Hayden Beard. This game marks the start of the 2nd half of the season for the Texas League.

Lexington and Lancaster get to chill for one more day, then it's back to business on Thursday. Lancaster formally kicks off the 2nd half of the California League season, while Lexington's final game of the 1st half takes place. The Sally League's 2nd half begins on Friday.

Tri-City and Vermont tango again. This time, they'll do it in the ValleyCats' digs, Joe Bruno Stadium. According to Subber10, Juri Perez will get the start in the ValleyCats' home opener. First pitch will be at 7 Eastern.

Greeneville and Johnson City will play the middle game of their 3-game set at 7:05 Eastern. I guess I'll find out who's starting first thing in the morning.

The GCLstros will host the Marlins in Kissimmee at Noon Eastern.

The Academy will travel to the Mariners' complex for a game at 10:30 AM Eastern.

Any thought of moving Jimmy Paredes to CF. He isn't going play 2nd base here and I don't think he provides too much power for a 3rd baseman. I am a big fan of his skill set and I think he should be playing somewhere on this team. He played fairly well last year with the big league team.

Tough break for OKC.

And once again, free baseball in San Antonio.

Tri-City welcomes Vermont to their humble abode, much like Vermont welcomed them to theirs.

A timely offensive outburst in the Appalachians.

Recap

OKC walked off with a 3-2 loss in Nashville, as Adalberto Flores served up a walk-off homer to Andy Gonzalez in the bottom of the 9th. J.B. Shuck's 2-run triple in the 6th was the only offense for the Redhawks. Brian Bass allowed 2 runs on 3 hits (solo homer), walked 2 and struck out 2 in 5 innings. Looks like Hector Ambriz made his debut for OKC after getting cut loose by the Indians. He allowed 3 hits and struck out 2 in 1 1/3 innings.

For the 2nd straight night, Corpus topped San Antonio in 12 innings, as Adam Bailey's RBI single gave the Hooks a 2-1 win. Drew Muren is making the most of his opportunity in Corpus, as he went 2-4 and scored the go-ahead run on Bailey's single. Ross Seaton allowed a run (on a solo homer) on 4 hits and struck out 3 in 8 innings. He also chipped in an RBI double in the 5th that tied the game at 1. Kevin Chapman threw 2 scoreless, allowing 2 hits and striking out 3. Erick Abreu improved to 8-2 on the season by throwing a scoreless 11th inning, allowing a hit, a walk, and striking out 2. Jason Stoffel got his 10th save, allowing a hit and getting a strikeout.

Tri-City dropped the opening leg of their home-and-home series with Vermont 7-4. Andrew Aplin and Austin Elkins both went 2-4 at the top of the order; Aplin drove in 2 and Elkins added 1 of his own. Jobduan Morales went 3-4 with a double, a solo homer (1), and scored 3 times. He also had 2 passed balls on the night. Juri Perez threw 4 innings and allowed 2 unearned runs on 2 hits, walking 1 and striking out 3. Travis Ballew threw 2 scoreless relief innings, allowing a hit, walking 1, and fanning 2. Jeremiah Meiners got the loss, allowing 3 runs (1 earned) on 2 hits and walking 2 without getting an out in the 7th. Jamaine Cotton threw 2 scoreless, allowing a hit and striking out 1, and Brad Propst allowed 2 runs in the 9th to put the game out of reach.

Greeneville busted out for 5 in the top of the 8th to blow by Johnson City 9-4. The big hit of the night belonged to Jean Carlos Batista, whose 2-run homer (1) in the 8th sealed the game. Everyone had an RBI except for Angel Ibanez and Ricky Gingras. Ariel Ovando went 2-5 with 2 RBI, on a single and a double. Marc Wik went 2-4 with an RBI and scored twice. Jimmy Howick and Terrell Joyce had RBI doubles. D'Andre Toney had an RBI single in the 8th and scored twice. Mike Martinez had an RBI single in the 7th. Richard Rodriguez threw 5 innings, allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 4 hits (solo homer) and striking out 8. Jordan Jankowski got the victory in his debut, as he got the last out of the 6th and pitched a scoreless 7th, allowing 2 hits and striking out 2. Mitchell Lambson got the 2-inning save, allowing a hit and striking out 5.

The GCL Astros shut out the Marlins 4-0. Teoscar Hernandez and Juan Santana both went 2-4 with a double and an RBI. Darwin Rivera and Wallace Gonzalez also drove in 1. Brett Phillips went 0-2, but drew 2 walks and stole 2 bases. Carlos Correa went 1-4 with a run scored. Chia-Jen Lo, trying to restart his career, pitched a 1-2-3 1st. Edison Frias got the win, pitching 4 1/3 innings of relief, allowing all 6 Marlins hits, walking 1 and striking out 5. Erick Gonzalez retired all 5 batters he faced in his debut, getting 2 outs in the 7th and pitching the 8th.

The Academy walked off 10-9 losers in 12 at the Mariners complex. Mesac Laguna went 3-5 and scored 3 times. Frederick Serrano went 2-5 with a double and an RBI. Marlon Avea also had 2 hits (2-3), a double, and an RBI. Yoel Silfa and Arturo Michelena had 2 hits and drove in 2 each. Edwin Villarroel allowed 4 runs on 3 hits in 4 1/3 innings and walked 5. Javier Saucedo didn't fare much better, as he allowed 5 runs on 5 hits (grand slam and solo homer) in 3 2/3, walking 3 and striking out 1. Yonquelys Martinez got the loss, allowing the losing run on 3 hits, walking 3 and striking out 4.

Game Scores

Brian Bass: 53
Ross Seaton: 73
Juri Perez: 56
Richard Rodriguez: 61
Chia-Jen Lo: N/A
Edwin Villarroel: 46

Mitchell Lambson, P, Greeneville
S (1), 2 IP, H, 5 K

Why on earth is he in Greeneville? He wasn't horrible in Tri-City or anything... must have been hurt in spring training.

2.

Jobduan Morales, C, Tri-City
3-4, 2B, solo HR (1), 3 R

Two passed balls are a no-no, which probably means that he's still very much a work in progress on defense. Offense, on the other hand... not many problems to report.

Corpus Christi's pitchers: Ross Seaton, Kevin Chapman, Erick Abreu, Jason Stoffel

Seaton: 8 IP, 4 H, ER, 3 K, 73 Game Score
Chapman: 2 IP, 2 H, 3 K
Abreu: W, IP, H, BB, 2 K
Stoffel: S (10), IP, H, K

1 run allowed in 24 innings. Can you believe Erick Abreu leads the Hooks in wins? Great outing from all 4 pitchers in this one.

Honorable Mentions

Drew Muren, CF, Corpus Christi: Seems like he's liking Corpus. Might be going back down once Austin Wates comes off the DL, but he is certainly making his case to hang around a little longer.

Adam Bailey, RF, Corpus Christi: Clutch!!!

Andrew Aplin, CF, Tri-City: He's no George Springer, but he's a solid addition to the system nonetheless. I think he'll be in Lexington by season's end.

Austin Elkins, 2B, Tri-City: Next Ben Zobrist!!!!:p

Richard Rodriguez, P, Greeneville: A solid outing for a guy that had a cameo in Lexington earlier in the season.

Ariel Ovando, RF, Greeneville: He's primed to break out. Here's hoping he tears up the Appy League this year.

Jean Carlos Batista, 2B, Greeneville: Impressed in a late-season call-up to the Appy Astros. He might be a guy to watch down there this season.

Teoscar Hernandez and Juan Santana, GCL Astros: Probably the 2 best hitters from the Academy last year. Will be very interesting to watch these two in the future.

Goat

[IMG] [IMG]

For walking off as the losing pitchers, Adalberto Flores and Yonquelys Martinez share the ignominy. Can't forget Jeremiah Meiners' horror show for Tri-City.

Looking Ahead

OKC and Nashville will play game 3 of 4 at 7:05. Armando Galarraga will get the start for the Redhawks. Opposing him will be Marco Estrada.

Also, Bud Norris will begin a rehab stint with the Redhawks on Saturday in the series opener in Omaha.

Corpus will conclude their series with San Antonio at 7:05. Jose Cisnero will be looking for an encore after firing a 2-hitter his last time out. He will be opposed by Josh Geer.

Lancaster kicks off the 2nd half on the road, with 4 in Lake Elsinore beginning at 7:05 Pacific. TBA will oppose the Storm and Matt Andriese.

Lexington comes back from the break by hitting the road, with stops in West Virginia and Greensboro. Luis Cruz will get the start for the Legends in the series opener against WV at 7:05 Eastern. He will be opposed by Zack Dodson.

Tri-City will conclude the home-and-home series with Vermont at 7 Eastern.

Greeneville will finish off their series with Johnson City at 7 Eastern. I suppose

The GCLstros will head off to Jupiter to play the Marlins at their place. First pitch will be at noon.

The Academy will be heading to the Cardinals complex. First pitch 10:30 AM Eastern.

Disappointing but not surprising. I think Springer is only other prospect you could make an argument for but he is neither having an amazing season nor does he have name cache yet.

Everyone else has just shown flashes of brilliance but little consistency.

Brett Wallace needs to be the Astros 3rb baseman right now, at least a platoon situation. He's been tearing it up for a month and a half, including an OPS over 1.000 in the bigs.

I'm not sure if he will actually be any good, he has hit well in the minors before, but having him toil in AAA serves no purpose.

CJ is out of chances in my book. 12 freaking walks all year, and a slugging % that is just barely north of .400, and falling.
