Just got done watching the entire event. Glad they're throwing a bone to the current owners with 7.8. I think having the consistent core between Windows Phone and Windows 8 could be huge for growing the ecosystem of apps.
I'm glad I didn't jump onto the Windows Phone 7. What's great is that how easy they are making for developers to port their Android and IOS APPS over to WP8. That's going to help them tremendously when WP8 release this fall. Guessed I'm going to wait a little longer to see how this pane out and I might finally jump in with a new WP8.
I've got a Samsung Focus and still really like it. I wanted get the Lumina 900, but thought it would be smart to see what the new Iphone and WP8 phones look like. I'm glad I held out. With the Surface announcment and the announcment today of WP8, I'm leaning towards Microsoft. The new phone is going to have to bring something really cool to the table. IOS is really showing its age.
well i was going to stick with iOS but i am not sure i want to do that because of the mapping situation. i like my google maps and my public transportation info. so win 8 + nokia maps is starting to look good.
I've always liked windows phone but wtf is up with that home screen? Icons are way too small and it looks like a huge grid. Did they say anything about being able to make folders and put apps into them? The new homescreen looks stupid imo
Samsung Focus allows for free tethering to a computer without paying AT&T's ridiculous tethering package. And since I'm grandfathered on the unlimited data package, I can pretty much get on the internet whenever I want. It's pretty freaking convenient for work. So I like WP7 but that tethering is just money.
So basically they are screwing all the wp7 users? You aren't going to want to run desktop apps in a phone.
They really f'd up the start screen. It looks so awesome in windows Phone 7. Feel bad for folks who bought a WP7 recently, too. Left to die.
That start screen is just an example of what you'll be able to do with that ability to resize. The start screen can look exactly like it does currently. You'll be able to do this same customization on current phones with the 7 .8 update.
Once Surface launches, Microsoft will get more partners. This will definitely help their Windows Phone.
I do not plan to get a Windows Phone. Not because I don't like them but because the company I works for is a direct competitor of theirs and will subsidize my iPhone plan. Windows Phone 7 is really, really slick. I don't understand why more people aren't going WP7 and soon WP8 over Android. If I'm on a budget or can't/don't want to go iOS, WP is it.
I'm thinking about switching to WP8 and also Windows 8 at the beginning of 2013, it'll line up perfectly with my cellphone renewal and computer upgrade
I would hope it could look closer, though I don't think it will be able to be 'exactly' the same as WP7. From what I've read, tiles will be centered and the sidebar/space that leads to the app list is gone (I'd imagine there will still be an app list? or will it just be a scroll? ). Hopefully with those changes you can still work the tiles out somehow (centering automatically will make that harder IMO). Because I always thought this was really well done and looked very strong: Spoiler This is not as slick imo: Spoiler Definitely a step back. The rest of the UI design still looks solid though.
