Sounds like the finals will be a flop fest. Oh wait, it already is. You know what I miss? The block.shot. Whatever happened to that? Now we get to see Battier fall down. That's great basketball. Average Blocks per NBA TEAM: 1987 - 453 1988 - 442 1991 - 452 1993 - 428 1994 - 429 1995 - 423 2008 - 388 2009 - 394 2010 - 398 2011 - 399 2012 - 336 http://www.basketball-reference.com/leagues/NBA_2012.html That's 2,000 less blocks per season. And, and there were less playoff games due to the format. They also had less supplements, and whatever it is some guys think there were less of that makes the past players suck in comparison to King James who I haven't seen try to block one shot. I've seen him and Bosh flop.
How would they punish floppers after making rulings after games? If through just fines, forget it, these players make enough where most will just keep on doing it. If they suspend or assessed a technical that counts toward the point system towards a suspension, then we're talking.
A few of you guys act like this is hard to stop. This is easy any way you want to fix it. 1) Change the officials. 2) Have current officials stop rewarding players for flopping. 3) Start a point system: 3 flops = 1 game suspension 6 flops = 2 game suspension (now you've been noticed by the league and the penalties get more severe) 8 flops = 3 game suspension 10 = 5 game suspension, and so on It's not hard to stop it. All the NBA has to do is say they will start suspending for flopping.
I think there is a way that fines would work. If you go back and review the tapes, it is pretty obvious to point out flops. I'm talking even flops on the offensive end when the ball carrier is whipping his head back and crying like he's getting punched repeatedly. An idea for a fine system I had was to fine the player's first flop 1k, which is nothing to them. For each additional flop after that you continue to double that fine (second flop 2k, third 4k, fourth 8k, etc...). With this system, guys like Blake Griffin will owe 5 million before its even halftime of the season opener.
To who? Everyone always blames officials in each sport, so who should take over? How do you do that? Officials don't have the benefit of slow motion replay like we do. And if they did, you know how many stoppages there would be to review any possible flops? It would ruin the momentum of the game. There are some blatant flops, I'll give you that. But how do you determine the 50/50 calls? There will be plenty of cases where you're not sure if a player flopped, or if they slipped, or actually fell due to contact. How do you determine that without pissing off players in a battle of he said she said?
I think the point is to eliminate the blatant, over the top flopping. Those are easy to point out even in real time. If it's 50/50 you could probably give the player the benefit of the doubt because you know the notorious ones (Griffin, Ginobli, CP3, etc.) will have conducted about 25 other obvious flops in any given quarter
I would use players to report each other for flopping. Players know who flops and they hate it when someone flops on them. They will be the first to report someone who flopped on them. After the game a player can ask for a form that asks who flopped, when and a brief description. To make sure the league doesn't receive bogus reports they can state this rule: 3 false reports and all reports submitted will be ignored.
Read my former post. Players know when someone just flopped on them. If it's 50/50 the league can say they were unable to determine if it was a flop, therefore the report doesn't count against the player. However, they may be subject to start paying close attention to that player. You really make it seem like it's impossible because of the 50/50 flops. It's not. Punish the obvious ones and the 50/50 ones will severely decline. Players don't want to take the chance of being suspended without pay. Make an example of a star to show stars will be punished too.
That would be the route I would take, but Stern would never have the balls to do that. It's like the method Coach Popp uses in practice to get his players in check. He calls out Tim Duncan.
Yeah, I think that falls under excessive and the NBA players union would be all up in arms on that. Besides, if they get suspended, they miss a game check, which is pretty substantial anyways.
As nice as this sounds... the commissioner will decide who flops. When to fine that person. And also it doesn't affect the outcome of the game so it's pointless fining! Basketball reasons.
there's some verrrryy obvious fouls that needs to be taken away. that's all. there always will be some minor embellishing the contact.
Look at what the league did to Kevin Martin. It shows they can stop rewarding the offensive player for flopping. I don't believe for one second it's subjective. Luis Scola doesn't get rewarded for flopping, so he stops busting his ass for flops. Stop rewarding flops and it will stop. We can't rely on the officials to do a good job then change them. If the new ones don't do a good job then implement a system to penalize players. I believe if the league wanted flopping out of the game it would have been gone by now. It's been over six years. Why give the officials more control over the game?
Image on front page of Yahoo! about this story. Hooray for (former) Rockets making the national media!
What Im afraid of the most is, if they start punishing floppers, will that lead to a stupid amount of blocking calls? I dont want a free throw competition.
I was just going to post this! Thought that was hilarious. When you click the link, this is the picture you see...
Wouldn't be applied equally. A player like Martin flopping would be fined more and more often than a player like Wade flopping. Nothing will happen anyway
