No under the old rules you got a compensation pick the next year if you failed to sign one of your picks in the first 3 rounds including supplemental round. You didn't get another pick if you failed to sign that compensation pick the following year. Thats expanded under the new cba as teams now get two years of potential compensation picks, but I haven't heard about the protection being taken away for supplements picks. Hopefully it's a moot point for the Astros.

 

No prob. I think you were confusing supplemental picks and compensation picks. There's free agent supplemental (aka compensation) picks and unsigned draftee compensation picks. We'll call the former type 1 and the latter type 2 for simplicity sake.

Type 1: Is compensation for losing a free agent. Will yield a first round pick and/or supplemental round pick depending on the quality of free agent lost (type A or B via Elias). E.g the Astros got the 41st pick in supplemental first round for losing Clint Barmes (Type B FA). The Cardinals got the Angels 1st round pick AND a supplemental 1st round pick for losing Pujols (type A FA).
An unsigned type 1 pick will give you a type 2 pick the next draft at the same draft spot + 1. E.g my example about brett austin.

Type 2: Is compensation for not signing a previous draft pick. The point you highlighted from wikipedia is that this pick doesn't roll to the next year again. E.g. Team fails to sign 10th pick in 2010 draft. This team gets the 11th pick in the 2011 draft as compensation. If said team fails to sign that pick, it does not get 12th pick in the 2012 draft.

 

So, 100K more than I expected but still a good deal. Now, let's get Ruiz!

So what are the odds we can sign both Ruiz and Virant? It seems like that's barely enough to cover Ruiz.

 

I think that with our savings from the other top 10 draft picks... hopefully will be about 200k at least .. plus the ability that we can go an extra 550k over without losing any picks ( only taxed ) that the nearly 2M we can go overslot will be enough to sign both

 

This, the Astros can get right around $1,900,000 with Ruiz, Virant and Hinjosa there is no reason we cannot get 2 of the 3.

 

Riuz slot value is $360,200 and is looking for $800,000 to sign (end of supplemental first round money). Thus, the Astros only need to go over $440,000 to sign Ruiz, which will leave $860,000 in bonus money.

The slot money for Virant or Hinojosa is $100,000. The question is whether either of them will sign for $960,000.

 

I would be shocked (pleasantly) if Ruiz signs for 800,000. Think it will be somewhere 1 to 1.5 million. The remaining college draftees should open up a bit more money.

 

I defer to you on this, since you follow this more closely than me. I had thought that Ruiz (or his advisor/agent) said that he was looking for end of supplemental first round money (aka $800,000).

If the Astros can't have both, who do they prefer? Virant over Ruiz?

 

According to news articles he was asking for top 10 overall money at the time of the draft ( he won't get that). I guess they would target Ruiz first given that they drafted him when both were available in the 4th. Theres also been some comments by luhnow and heck where they've said they are confident they'd get the top 10 round picks signed. I still think they going to get Ruiz signed and make a strong run at virant.

 

They'll get them signed. Wouldn't be surprised if Crane agrees to pay penalties either.

Would much rather gamble on a young prospect with over-slot money, than overpay a past-prime veteran just to say we are making an effort with payroll (the post WS Drayton phenomenon).

Woody Williams. Probably the worst signing this team has had. Wasted millions, played terribly, and cost us a draft pick.
