Three years is skewing things? I care more about the past 3 seasons than I do about something that happened prior.

Greinke has years before and after that show 2009 was a fluke.

Matt Cain didn't get this good last year. He's been one of the best in baseball since 2009, a span of 3.5 seasons. The numbers have been stunningly consistent, while Greinke hasn't. What Cain doesn't have is a clear Cy Young campaign yet. Now, if Cain keeps this season up, he will have it.

It doesn't even get into their postseason stats where Cain didn't give up a run in 3 starts on their way to the world series, and Greinke struggled through his 2 starts.

Edit: I'd take either on our team (they are an improvement over Wandy), but for what they will cost moving forward, I'd love to have Cain. Not that Cain is an option, with him locked into an 8 year deal.

Perhaps but what did you expect? Respect? For the Astros? The team that lost 106 games last season? The team that was so irrelevant that their new ownership flushed 50 years of NL baseball down the toilet, raised their hind legs on their long suffering fans and agreed to move to the AL West? If this upsets you, then the next 10 years will absolutely kill you. What happened to them last night is just a glimpse of what is to come.

I suppose now you are going to go on a diatribe about how the rangers are a better organization than the Astros, like you do with the spurs in the rockets forum.

You're way too dramatic. The Rangers haven't always been good, and they won't always be good. For most of their history they've been among the worst franchise in ALL of professional sports.

The Astros competed extremely well for right around a decade when they were building correctly...they appear to be on that course now, at least making decisions using the right criteria. This vaunted AL West has been baseball's forgotten division for most of its history; pretending that the Astros can't possibly win that division in the next 10 seasons is just overstating the case. I can not think of a topic regarding Houston sports that you don't assume a glass half empty approach to for eons to come.

Eff the AL West. Eff the Rangers. Eff Bud Selig. Go 'stros.

Glass half-empty? More like glass bone-dry and the nearest available clean water is on Mars.

God no! I have watched the Rangers take nearly 30 years to get to where they are now. That's why I'm not buying into the popular assumption around here that it will only take 3 or 4 years for the Astros rebuild enough to compete in the AL. They can literally be facing what the Pirates have had to live with for decades. And the Spurs ARE the the better organization. The results on the court say so. Since you happen to feel otherwise, I'll be most interested in seeing you produce some evidence as to why this isn't case.

Why are you being so kind here? For the majority of their history, they have literally sucked a**. The Rangers in the 70s and 80s were a bad joke.

Appearing to be on a course using the right criteria is vastly different from conclusively demonstrating that they know WTF they are doing by producing on the field. Nothing I have seen from the ownership change to the league switch to the so-called "smart" decisions being made now, would lead me to believe that the Astros will be able to rise up and win in the AL West anytime soon which is why I give them 10 years.

Yes, that division sucks and when you look at Texas & Anahiem, they hardly give the impression of two powerhouse teams with longevity. But you must also look at teams like KC & Seattle whose organizations have been much better that of the Astros and they still can't break through. So just because the Astros are now giving the appearance of doing things right doesn't mean that success will come. It all boils down to having faith in the Astros organization and the people who run it. You still have it - I lost mine a long time ago. In fact, I lost faith in all of the Houston professional sports organizations because I simply got tired of waiting for them to get a clue as to what it takes to succeed.
