Read up on the dowry system in India and you'll see why this happens. When you're basically forced to go into debt every time you marry off a daughter but gain money every time you marry off a son, you'll quickly see a poorly constructed economic incentive to have boys. Pretty screwed up system

I spent most of a summer in India, and loved it. I had great experiences with the people there, was treated extremely well, but at the same time, saw what couldn't be missed. A society up to its neck in the caste system, with ancient "traditions" that should have been tossed in the dumpster centuries ago. Saying India has a rich culture is an understatement, but parts of that culture, the dark side, if you will, persist in places, and is probably more widespread than some Indians would like to admit. This is a terrible story, and similar stories are not uncommon. Give India credit, though. They've made great strides. This too shall pass. What I fail to see is any humor in the opening post. Some of you need to hit yourselves upside the head.
