I bought my G-Nexus last Christmas and just now reading all of these stories of how Verizon is forcing people to switch over to limited plans by the 28th.

What's the full story on this? I've been grandfathered in for a while, will I lose my unlimited this month then?

You will lose unlimited if you upgrade to another discounted phone.

I have a grandfathered plan.. I'd like to keep it.

So if I renew a 2 year agreement I can't keep the old plan? That's wack..

I believe you have to start buying phones at full price to keep your plan.

unlimited is going the way of the dinosaur, as evidenced by some carriers throttling down unlimited users that pass a certain threshold. They're using every excuse in the book when you buy a new phone these days to tell us why we can't get what we were once promised.

With AT&T it was "You can't keep your unlimited plan if you upgrade"

"But I have been grandfathered in"

"Not with a phone that old, we can't do that anymore"

    "That's what "grandfathered in" means!"

    "I will check"

"Well, go ahead and check but if I can't get it, I'm walking"

    .....

"Ok we can do it, but you won't get any text messaging (and we'll throttle you if you pass x gb)"

You've got 2 weeks, otherwise you are SOL.

I was going to re-up once the Galaxy S3 or Iphone 5 comes out and keep my 2 year old Droid Incredible in the meantime.

So I can't just wait until later this year and need to change plans in next two weeks???

Yes. Buy the phone with what you think has the highest re-sale value come August. Then sell that phone and buy whatever you want. Only real option, but it'll cost you an extra 100-150 by the end of the day. Atleast you keep your plan for another 2 years though.

Contracts have nothing to do with the plan. You keep the plan for as long as you want, regardless of your contract length. If Verizon forces you to change the plan simply because they are phasing it out completely across the board, then you have the option to disconnect w/out a penalty at the time you are forced to change, but your contract will still stand.

I'm grandfathered too, but writing's on the wall - they're going to pull the plug on everyone sooner or later.

    New plans - check
    Upgraders - check
    Hold outs - next

Same thing with the "New Every Two" upgrade

If you are correct - I will no longer be with Verizon after my current contract expires

So you have the option to disconnect without penalty but the contract isn't voided? Please clarify.

By the way, I see the Samsung Galaxy S3 is sold by Verizon with 2 year agreement for $199. Plus, they recently offered me a $30 credit towards the new phone if I upgrade.

I see the Samsung Galaxy S3 is sold online for $700-800 new.

I was thinking maybe I'll upgrade with this phone and then sell it. Good idea or no?

This rarely happens. When carriers were changing text rates from .02 to .05 to .10 , a lot of people were able to disconnect w/out a penalty. Its even rarer for companies to force rate plan changes. Usually they will convince the customer to do it, such as denying them eligibility to get a subsidized price of a phone w/out a plan change.

If the carrier forces you to change your unlimited plan to a tiered plan, you should be allowed to disconnect w/out a penalty at the time they try to force you. If you allow them to change it and you continue to pay for the service, then you are stuck with the remainder of the contract. Basically if they make the change and you decided after a couple of months you don't like it, you're stuck with it.

Just got off phone with Verizon. She told me I wouldn't lose my unlimited plan until after my next upgrade in Dec 2013. Don't know why this is the case, but I'm happy for now.

I know a lot of people are averse towards carriers phasing out unlimited data options, but realistically why?

I've had unlimited on Sprint for a couple of years now and through most circumstances I have never gone over 2GB (seems what carriers are offering) a month. The only time I ever did I was basically tethering the entire month and ended up close to 5GB.

I'm at 15 gigs on my Droid.

Instead of upgrading through Verizon, they're practically begging people to use eBay or unlocked phones instead.

    The options are:
    1) Get phone at discount, lose current plan
    2) Pay full phone price, keep current plan.

So they're not forcing a switch, more like nudging you to fork over 400 more dollars they normally eat because of ridiculous monies involved in their biz...

Do you face Facebook and youtube. Uploading a picture, looking at pictures, stream videos on your phone takes up a huge amount of bandwidth.

Ever use Pandora as your radio on trips between Dallas and Houston?

People didn't even need broadband in 2001, but the world is moving a different place limited only by our phone's bandwidth... :(
