It's laughable everyone is reading stuff that some jabroni in their mom's basement had to make up to fully enjoy this movie. Don't get me wrong, that's some of the fun, but cahhhhmon -- this isn't what we were waiting for this many years after Alien. This has South Park episode written all over it. They need to parody this because the fanboys are acting ridiculous and Scott is probably laughing in his grave.

I wasn't aware that Ridley Scott was dead.

He must be the 2pac of film directors.

Watched Planet of the Vampires (1965) which I'd heard was an inspiration for Alien, after watching it, it seems that Prometheus borrows a lot of elements of the film as well.

By your logic the same can be said about any creative work. There's an actual discussion of the ideas and themes in this movie. I don't think there were any deep discussions about Indiana Jones hiding in a fridge. Is Ridley Scott a vampire didn't know he slept in graves.

The black good was a biological weapon. They wanted to destroy life on earth and replace it with superior beings. The black goo wouldve accomplished that. It seems that the black goo would turn whatever it mixed with into something that could create new life when given a host body to use. That would eventually turn everything on earth into something else and get rid of humans.

Yes, I thinks it's been mentioned but add to the fact that everything that comes into contact with it becomes extremely agressive from the worms upward.

Caught this on Sunday night with my wife. I enjoyed it...and my wife, who doesn't watch anything sci-fi said she really liked it. However, it did not completely blow me away.

After reading through the past ten plus pages of stuff I missed while being away, glad to see that some of you guys had the same exact thoughts/questions I did. But there are a few that either were too insignificant to warrant discussion or possibly I mis-remembered from the movie...

Why, when Shaw realized that it was David that infected Holloway, did she not retaliate against him? It seemed like when she experienced the "lightbulb goes on" moment, she sorta stood there shell-shocked.

What was the significance of the flute that the engineers/David used to enable the cool universe map. Seems like an arachaic tool to enact an advanced piece of technology.

Has there ever been a black guy to survive to the end of a sci-fi/space flick? Hell, even Jedi Samuel L. Jackson was wacked.

While we visually see Vickers fall and supposedly get crushed by the horseshoe ship...is there a remote sequel-ish possibility that she actually survived, similar to how Shaw survived?

In the beginning of the movie, when the engineer sacrificed himself and the black goo fell into the water, didn't it wipe out the existing DNA that was in the water? It seemed like the existing life on the planet was altered by this event....which would eventually lead to the creation/evolution of the human species? If I saw this part correctly, then the engineers wouldn't have been the creators of life on earth...just the modifiers of life...since it already existed. If anyone could correct/confirm this thought. I could've sworn that the black good erased/killed/deleted existing DNA in the water and then replaced it with the engineer's DNA.

Those things being said...I would love to see a sequel. I'm not overly interested in the xenomorph aspect...would like to explore the engineer race...or Shaw's/David's quest to find them. This could almost spawn off a series of movies rather than a singular sequel.

Overall, I'd give the move a shaky 7/10. Would be more solid if there weren't so many silly plot items and questions left unanswered.

The beginning of the movie might not be Earth according to an interview with either Ridley Scott or Damon Lindeloff.

But they insinuated that something similar would have occurred on Earth, and that they may have created life on multiple planets

Since this was mentioned in BoomBoom's post

I noted the flute that the engineer in the hologram plays to activate the star map and later David plays to do the same. While it seems archaic I took it to be a type of password to gain access to the computer and the flute like a hardware key might require both a particular flute and note sequence. Of course if it is a password / hardware key it seems odd to just leave it around and play the password on the hologram. Although the note sequence might be difficult to reproduce but David being an android can.

One other possibility that I wouldn't put beyond Lindelof and /or Scott is that it is a homage to Close Encounters of the Third kind where a musical sequence is the key to communicating with the aliens.

It supposedly* is an homage, but particularly to a 1971 Dr. Who episode arc (with lots in common to this film):
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/classic/episodeguide/daemons/detail.shtml

Also a host similarities to this 1970 arc:

    Seriously. . .
I think I would have started hacking off David's hands
He was pushing too many buttons too quickly.
    STOP TOUCHING ISHT!!!!

The computer should have had the same translation information that david had
someone should have through that maybe the translation program was more important.

    Just saw it.

    So...
What exactly does the black liquid do? It seems to me that it is the source of all kinds of different crazy monsters, but at the same time it was also used to create us human?

Is there going to be a sequel?
