92 dream team without a doubt was the best USA team assembled and has set the bar for years to come..I do agree that team is missing one Huge piece in Hakeem Olajuwon who belongs on that team as much or more so than anyone else. And yes a few others deserve to be on the roster other than Latener but they had that rookie politics as mentioned above. The 92 team would make the 08 team look pathetic to say the least IMO

If the Redeem team had Kevin Garnett instead of Boozer it would be more interesting. Maybe have Tim Duncan as well.

This isn't even close! If you watched how well that Dream Team played together....Magic, Bird Jordan, man the Dream team would dominate!

the dream team highlights are great and all but the highlights from today's athletes look way better. it all depends on what rules youre playing by. kidd/wade/lebron/kobe/prince/d12's defense is not something you can downplay. kobe/wade/lebron/melo/d12's offense isnt either. deron/redd/bosh played solid that year as well.

i'd say it's pretty close and i wouldnt be surprised either way. using the HOF argument is dumb. anyone can get into the HOF. matchups/athletic ability/skill is a better argument.

    Dwight Howard...lol

I sometimes imagine how Dwight Howard would do in a league with the centers of the 80's/90's. I don't think it would be pretty.

Dwight has abysmal post moves. They are just plain horrible. Him going up against a defensive presence like Ewing would just make him look weak. He can't even shoot a jump hook properly. I doubt Dwight could even get 10 points matched up against those centers much less 30. Not to mention he would have to ultimately have to play full 40 min games against Robinson/Ewing/Barkley while they would get sufficient rest if need be. He just wouldn't stand a chance.

I mean come on...Could Dwight ever do this:

Or this (start around the 3 min mark)

That lineup you listed has absolutely nobody to hold Barkely and Malone and Barkley was the superstar during the games.

    weslinder,

1992 was the last year of Bird's career. So yes, a 2008 Lebron James was much better than a 1992 Larry Bird.

just look at how Dwight fared against Yao, everytime those two matched up together Dwight's shooting percentage and points per game all plummeted and on the other hand Dwight's defense can't slow down Yao. I expect similar results from Dwight when matched up against Ewing or Robinson.

A closer match up might be the 1984 US Men's National team against the Redeem Team, especially if you let them take some of the invitees that got cut.

    Steve Alford
    Leon Wood
    Patrick Ewing
    Vernon Fleming
    Alvin Robertson
    Michael Jordan
    Joe Kleine
    Jon Koncak
    Wayman Tisdale
    Chris Mullin
    Sam Perkins
    Jeff Turner

    Cut from the team:
    Charles Barkley
    John Stockton
    Terry Porter
    Dell Curry
    Joe Dumars
    Karl Malone
    Danny Manning
    Mark Price
    Chuck Person
    Roy Tarpley

It was a choice between Shaq and Laettner.

There is a reason why 1 team is called the dream team and the other redeem team.

If only there is less injury, the possible 2012 team could give the dream team a run of their money.

This is ridiculous we are even having this debate. The 2008 team, plain and simple does not have a chance because of Bball IQ and a lack of playing as well together. Spain and Argentina were watered town in the 2008 Olympics as well. So I don't know if the competition was all that. I think a debate between the 1996, 2000, and 2008 team is more appropriate. I'll take 1996 in that debate.

What's with all this athleticism talk anyway? Just because Bird and Magic were past their prime, they were still really effective. Luis Scola, who is well past his athleticism, dominated the US team in 2008.

Even from an athletic standpoint which is so overrated(Bird one of the greatest players of all time), here is how I would rank the most athletic players of both rosters. Considering speed and quickness, vertical, size and wingspan, and power and strength.

    1.Lebron James
    2.MJ
    3.Dwight Howard
    4.David Robinson
    5.Clyde Drextler/Kobe Bryant
    6.Charles Barkley
    7.Dwayne Wade
    8.Karl Malone
    9.Chris Bosh

If anyone remembers, the "Reedem" team had troubles with Spain in the final gold medal game, it was a pretty close game towards the 2nd half. The Dream Team just dominated their competition all throughout.. and no this has little to do with the competition being a lot better today. It's more to do with how good the "Dream" team really was.

Im taking the 08 redeem team. Those guys on the original Dream Team probably couldnt get up and down the court more than a handful of times at this point...they are all close to 50 years old.

    Barkley Olympic field goal %
    '92: .711
    '96: .816 (half the attempts)

    3 pt % both years: .750! (9-12 shooting)

Barkley was the leading scorer on BOTH teams. Yeah why would we want THAT for Robert Horry and Sam Cassell...

(Hakeem's game didnt translate into the Olympic game really. Or he certainly played it finesse and was just going through the motions.)
