Two ways to go - make a run over the next couple of years, or develop and do it starting in the 2014-2015 season. Both strategies will have their ugly divisive sides. If you want to aim at 2014 and beyond what do you do? You create as much cap space as possible for next summer when a bumper crop of UFA's will be available and some teams will be selling their souls to get out of luxury tax hell. You ditch Martin (after he hopefully returns to his 2010-2011 season form) at the trade deadline as an expiring for young talent and/or draft picks. You attempt to package Lowry and Scola and Dally and Bud/Morris for a really bad contract or two and draft Drummond (that package would get most teams in the EC out of the lottery - except for the Bobcats of course). So next year, after the trade deadline you have a lineup of: Drummond/Camby D-Mo/PPat Parsons/Bud or Morris Lee/14th draft pick Dragic/??? 16th pick You have $20+ million in cap space and you try to make a serious all star addition in 2013. You have whatever you gathered from dealing Martin. If Parsons and D-MO and Drummond progress quickly you are competitive after OKC has to shed players because of the luxury tax. Risky - hell yes. But it could work. Shear speculation but I find it interesting.
Rajon Rondo is better than any PG currently on the Rockets. Paul Pierce is better than any SG/SF currently on the Rockets. Kevin Garnett...in a strike-shortened managed minutes season was usually (though not always) the 3rd best Celtic. If you don't already have a Top Tier PG and a Top Tier SG/SF...why would KG even consider signing with a team scrambling to become playoff illegible? Garnett has two pathways. Give the C's a hometown break to see what else they get can get since they are reasonably under the cap. Or if the C's offend him, sign with a contender. Just having a random thought...Garnett would sure help the Nets if they land both Williams and Howard. Or the Laker$ if they turn Gasol into a PG and a rotational SF/SG.
That's right how could I forget......everybody is desperate to play for this team. Of course KG would prefer this team over another team that was 12 mins away from the NBA Finals
Why sign KG and get Gasol when those guys are declining? Its not going to get us anywhere plus it will set the Rockets back even longer to rebuild. The sooner we accept that the Rockets don't have a chance without a young star player, the sooner the Rockets would be successful in the future. KG is on the decline and after this series vs Miami, and Pau Gasol is just horrible against the Thunders. Gasol is way too soft plus he's getting old. No way am I going to let two old vets who are on the downward spiral of their careers to take up the PT of the young talents we have here.
To compete and reach the WCF for the next 2 years. And if you say "Gasol is soft" I say you are just parroting spurious ill considered comments made by people who don't have an understanding of NBA basketball.
For you all who consider Gasol soft I recommend watching tape from his 2 rings. Yep that is right 2 rings. Same as the Dream. Heck I watched the tapes. Otherwise STFU.
Old players past their prime is exactly what this team needs. And I can see KG dying to join us too! Spoiler
http://blog.mysanantonio.com/buckharvey/2012/06/duncan-and-garnett-together-at-last/ Spurs want Garnett. They are a smart organization because they agree with me.
Yes...and Scott Kerr has rings too. So if you dare question him...just remember, you're questioning Dream, too, Rocket Fans!!! Holy crap. Saying Pau Gasol isn't soft because he has rings like Hakeem is not a strong argument.
they're in a completely different place than the Rockets. they're looking to add a piece to put them over the top in a one year window on the heels of being a Western Conference finalist. the Rockets are nowhere near the vicinity. it does not make sense for an organization that says it's rebuilding to bring in a guy like garnett at this stage of his career.
Spurs have little money to spend. No KG for them. They need to learn how to create cap flexibility like Maury first!
