I can't stop looking at Vincent van Gogh's "Starry Night". Know any other beautiful works of art such as this one?
Did you just buy that painting? I am not familiar with it. I do know that Thomas Kincaid does some cool things with light.
What about that portrait with that not so hot chick with the smarmy smile and no eyebrows ? who painted that one? =) I really enjoy Salvador Dali's wprk. He is the only franco fascist I can tolerate. It's surrealism at its finest, each subject has a life of its own.
Gustav Klimt is an artist I have grown quite fond of...he is the master of depicting the female form. it's all very raw and natural, but at the same time provocative his artwork was actually fashioned in real gold, and I believe this original work is still standing as the most expensive piece of art ever sold Spoiler tried to avoid the nudes for Clutch's sake, but google will provide a good starting point
No its a time waster that leaves you with nothing worthwhile in life just like anime, lol jk. I like impressionism /post impresionism, too
If the folks on this board like this impressionist/post impressionist style of art, make sure the next time you are in Paris, skip the Louvre and go to the Musee d'Orsay. (actually, don't skip the Louvre, its awesome, but you'll love the Musee d'Orsday.)
What's the difference or meaning of impressionism / post impressionism? I'm certainly digging the latter (posted by dmc and Pete the Cheat). Nice.
From what I remember, Impressionism was the dominant Western art movement from the 1850s till the 1890s. Napoleon III hired a guy to completely gut the old Paris to give it the look the city has today. The booming construction left many artists anxious about things changing too fast. In response, artists preferred a new style that quickly captured the scene in the moment. Their blurry, watery-looking paintings emphasized how light and color affected an outdoor scene like a restaurant at sunset. This style lasted for about 40 years till artists got bored with it. Just before the 20th century started, post-Impressionism emerged. Artists of the new movement still had anxiety about the fast-changing, Industrializing world; however, instead of capturing the scene as it might appear to a bunch of people, they emphasized how that anxiety looked inside their minds. Post-Impressionism didn't rely on external lighting and colors changing like Impressionism because its perspective was more internal. This shift inside the mind was a precursor to 20th century art which kicked off with Cubism. Impressionism (Venice at Sunset by Monet): This is the equivalent of a tourist waiting for the right kind of sunlight to illuminate the scene, then trying to take a quick snapshot before the moment is gone. Post-Impressionism (Night Cafe by Van Gogh): The colors are supposed to make you feel nauseous like you've had one too many, hence the lights which seem too bright on the eyes. Notice how it's past midnight. Drunk men sitting lonely by themselves, one man has a w**** giving him company. To keep from getting sick, you either drink more in despair or go commit a crime to escape temporarily from this hellish place.
When they are actually like women, and not the "erotically provactive", aka "dirty smut" stuff like current generations, yes.
Okay how about this, anyone know a good site to get these paintings to put as my desktop wallpaper? How come there are different versions of Starry Night by van Gogh... There's one I really like but I can't find one without the right resolution. And all the other versions I find on the internet have different colors.
