honestly? i rarely put up that sign. i prefer to ask current employees for referrals. Sometimes it takes like 2 days, sometimes 2 weeks. Right now, people come in asking for jobs everyday because it's summer so it's not really an issue. Again, another perplexing thing about it since he's taken down like 2 or 3 job-seekers' phone numbers this past week alone.

I'm sry you're butthurt from my candid response...with this particular subject I'm one of the people that think your whinning is ridiculous since it is part of your job and I felt like giving my opinion since you decided to post it for thousands of people to see and comment on...sorry if we don't all agree with your viewpoint. Maybe you should go back to posting quirky stuff you find while scouring the interwebs since that is cool and all...

    You're still not getting it.

More like he's wondering how a person would quit with unpaid bills based on the gossip he's getting.

It's less about the whining, but more about idiots who don't think ahead yet presumably think they're smarter than they are.

Kind of a common theme around here.

I would say, as a business owner, if you have a quality employee who is important to your business then you offer him a raise and you do everything you can to keep him. You don't have to sit around and wait for him to ask you for a raise while you continue to low ball him. A good proactive business owner would offer the raise. That's what I do with my guys. Most of the time when my guys do a good job or go above and beyond, I'll get them $100 amazon gift cards or tell them to go to amazon and pick something out and use our company paypal account to pay for it. Amazing how happy/motivated and how hard they work after that. It keeps them loyal too. In my industry, the top guys always have options so they get offers all the time.

Reach out to the guy and offer him his job back with a promise of a salary review next month. If you were otherwise satisfied with him as a worker, why not? Saves you the aggravation of hiring and training someone new. He's obviously operating off some bad advice. Here's a chance to teach him something valuable.

Reach out to the guy and offer him his job back at a ten percent pay cut. He is clearly desperate and not that smart, but he has already shown he can perform the job well enough not to get fired.

Yeah, I apologize (to the OP) for my abrasive post. But...

He's a young unskilled worker...does it really seem like a stretch to think that he would try to get more money by quitting? Yeah it was dumb, but like I said this isn't some career job this folks are in...they're young, immature, and not experienced in the real world when it comes to working...they're going to do some stupid stuff...it should be expected. He knew hottaballa really needed him, hell we don't know all the circumstances, he might gotten pissed because he felt like he was being overworked and knew him quitting would be tough on the business, which it clearly was from this post...he probably thought if he quit he hoped the OP would be like "no plz don't quit, here, I'll pay you more".

What I don't understand is that once the OP knew the situation why not just offer him the job back with more pay? They both would benefit from that decision...unless there is some sort of pride thing involved now which would be kind of silly because his other workers (and himself) are probably suffering because of it. Get him back and continue to find others that can replace him and others if they pull this again.

Lol, I had a friend like this who quit a movie theater job we had back in high school. That fool walked out trying to be all badass, throwing his Cinemark hat on the lobby floor. Two hours later, my shift is over, and I'm walking out with another friend and there that fool is, sitting on the curb. Momma didn't want to pick him up. This is right before the recession really hit Texas, too, so he was out of luck.

Will never understand why people quit without having something else lined up already. Heat of the moment?

Dude set a bad precedent by leaving without notice nor asking for a raise upfront.

If I was a manager, keeping the guy might be more trouble than it's worth. Even if I used him as a rental and firing him later, it sets a bad precedent with other low paid minions.

If they're low paid minions, hotballa likely needs a warm body rather than a lackey that can do B+ work for what he's getting.

My understanding is that hotballa owns a laundromat.

    Can anyone confirm?

Yes, how long before the clothes are going to be done, srsly.

Also, you say at first "If he had just asked for a raise I would have given it to him"

    then

you say "I would tell him what I tell everyone, wait for you 6 month review and maybe".

Which is it? And why so much concern over a job cleaning laundry?
