This. I'd be happy with Rivers at 14 or 16, but honestly if Ross is still on the board then you take him instead. Much of the appeal on Rivers comes from his pedigree, he's the son of Doc Rivers and he's been groomed since birth to be an NBA player. However with his average athleticism and average height for an SG I'm wondering if his ceiling will be any higher than Kevin martin. At 6'5 he barely escapes from the "combo guard" label, and given his performance in college I'm not sure he'll ever apply himself in defense.
if we get rivers and his dad shows up at one of the games (which i doubt) maybe he can teach McHale how to coach lol
If Rivers is there this is a no brainer. Take him and when Boston blows there team up soon Doc willl come and coach here.
People basing their opinion on Rivers college stats are probably the same people who want to draft a PJIII or Drummond. Who are all athleticism, no brain.. While Rivers is technically the opposite. He could be a Jason Terry type player, if not better.
Rivers is one of the guys that I would be ok with either pick. Good potential and the bloodlines say a lot about the type of character he can develop.
Unfortunately David Stern runs the NBA, and that means the MOST important thing about a player is his name. Or rather, how much money can be made off him
That would be nice and all, but we need someone who can guard Jason Terry. If you keep him honest, we beat the Mavs. Rivers defense is suspect. Pass.
Duke guys always make me cautious. Beyond Grant Hill . . . they normally end up just . . .intangible guys they maybe decent to good but nothing special Rocket River
It is crazy, but I like the idea of getting #18 for Kevin Martin and then getting.... #14-Meyers Leonard, #16-Austin Rivers, #18-Moe Harkless.
I'd take him. I am a huge Duke fan and had a love hate feeling for the guy, I think I would take him though.
Kyrie Irving. Prime Elton Brand. Luol Deng. Three great players from Duke. I might even add Utah's Boozer to that list.
Signed Jeremy Lin. Sure they milked him, but he earned it and had to fight for it. Don't be so cynical.
This is ridiculous, 2 years ago Austin Rivers was the #1 rated High School junior in the country, and 1 year ago he was the #1 rated High School Senior in the country, and now some people are on here talking about how they wouldn't take him with our measley little #16 draft pick. Are we serious here? A chance to get a player with an unreal killer instinct and skill set to match and we're saying no...at the 16th PICK NO LESS. That makes absolutely ZERO sense to me.... <iframe width="640" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/OJX8YUrItR8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Maybe the rule then for Duke should be, pass on the upperclassmen and take the one-and-done-ers. Sounds good to me. I'm fine with Rivers.
If austin rivers falls to us, we should try to trade him to boston for rondo and maybe pierce. hopefully just rondo. how about lowry, patterson, rivers for rondo and 21st pick is that too much. would you guys do it? would the celtics do it? http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=7onrha2 then, trade martin and dalembert to utah for al jefferson http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=chbj7cx this one kind of less realistic but, trade scola, 16th pick, and morris for josh smith http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=6ww8b9c buy a second round pick and draft a pg rondo/rookie pg martin/lee parsons/budinger smith/motiejunas jefferson/camby that's a contender
