Had a guy just quit on me last night and said he wasn't coming to work today. Said he found a new job and was starting today. I always treated this guy nice and never so much as said a harsh word to him. His justification for quitting after working 5 months? Pay wasn't high enough. He never even asked me for a raise. I would have given it to him if he had asked me for it since he was coming up on the 6 month mark anyway. Now I find out today from his friends (who work for me) that he only quit because he was hoping I'd offer him more money to stay. HOW STUPID CAN YOU BE?!? What business owner in their right mind would give a raise based on that? This isn't the NBA and he's not Dwight Howard. Now I'm shortstaffed and he has no job and apparently lots of unpaid bills, so everyone loses. frigging idiot.
Why do you pay him too low? Sounds like you can easily pay more and should, so why do you put him in this situation?
Don't you run a sandwich shop or something? Can't expect much from the socioeconomic class you draw as employees there.
Interesting how class in America is defined from the ground up; I guess in a nation of climbers, someone has to be at the bottom. (And the bottom of the melting pot is always burned black.)
Stupid move on his part, but I'm firmly in the camp that if one wants to quit their job, they should do it whenever it pleases them. To me, it's no more ethically questionable for someone to leave a job at an inconvenient time for an employer than it is for an employer to terminate an employee at an inconvenient time for them. Anyway, you should find no shortage of people willing to take his job.
Sounds like some low caliber employees. So I assume his friends or co-workers or whatever are just spreading a rumor saying he quit hoping he'd get more money - I wouldn't take what I heard seriously. If you're dealing with really, really low pay guys then that's just the nature of the business. Guys quit. Anyone can get a low paying job. Hell a tree or post can take the job of the guy holding a Massage Envy sign on the side of the road.
have you seen the skill of some of these sign spinners? I have a script about a loveable sign spinner who gets the girl. Adam Sandler as lead of course.
You got that right. Interestingly, I am currently sitting on both sides of this equation. I work in an industry where MY employees are low wage earners who frequently leave for better pay. My job is the first real wage earner level in the company which sucks because my performance is directly tied to the performance of the low wage earners that work for me. In other words, if I have sucky under performing employees, it makes me look sucky and under performing. So its all about how understanding my boss is as to how well I am perceived as doing. For 16 years now, I have had those understanding bosses. But in the last 3 months, my bosses boss (regional director) changed to a hard ass. Now I AM being held accountable for the performance of those "underachieving" class that will never amount to anything but what they are. Underachievers. I am already on a verbal warning and anticipating not having a job by (ironically) Labor Day even though I am frantically going through the motions of trying to survive all this. Fortunately, I was smart enough to be a saver for a "rainy day", and the thought of leaving this job and making a fresh start nearer family/friends is very appealing. So...I'm good either way. The only thing left to do is find an appropriate way to give the new regional director the finger on the way out. (by the way....2 other people(out of 12) in my district with the exact same job as mine are also in the same situation. Thats already 25% of the positions in changeover after 3 months.) Sorry if this is a thread derailment. Just hit close to home concerning my current status.
I guess there is a lack of communication between you and the employees? However, this should be expected and i'm sure the guy is replaceable, just poor judgement on the worker for leaving without notice.
