I'm pretty sure Lindelof borrowed some his idea for the movie from X-Files. Colonist, Black Oil (The X-Files) After skimming through this I'm rethinking about the Engineers and the black goo thing. I'm going to have to rethink about some of the theory. The only thing that's throwing me of is when they test the age of the dead Engineers.
Here's someone else interesting takes on the movie. http://cavalorn.livejournal.com/584135.html#cutid1 I also see bits and pieces taken from the Book of Geneisis "and god(Engineers) created man in his own image" and a from Adam and Eve: Spoiler
Disappointed. Trailer was way better than the movie. Nothing happened in it unfortunately. Best part of movie was the tech and the acting was petty good. Too bad there was really zero plot. And the payoff was dismal.
One thing that really pissed me off... Spoiler I pretty much knew exactly how the movie was going to play out from the trailer and all the commercial spoilers. They put way to much info in the commercials especially -- it was really just a matter of filling out the blanks at the theater.
Some really amazing concept arts here of Prometheus. I need to get this book. God, I hope there is a director's cut for the Elder person,. They might be holding back a lot of cool stuff for the sequel. So don't click on the link if you haven't seen the movie yet. Spoiler Interesting is that the Alien, Xeno probably already existed before Prometheus. Based on the murial and this concept. Spoiler http://prometheusfrance.forumdefans.com/t36-le-livre-officiel-informations-officielles
It will be interesting to se the full Director's cut, since (as noted) multiple scenes were obviously cut. The final result did feel hurried. Funny how Lindelof is a complete whipping boy for anything folks didn't like about the movie. It's not like anyone directly knows what came from him or Ridley, Ridley was still in charge, and Ridley's films already had a trademark of coy unanswered questions. I'm about to go see it for a second time, and look forward to it. I dig films that bury subtle nods and messages, even if the price is less of a pure mindless popcorn flick. I think that linked breakdown of Prometheus is compelling, even if I don't buy all of it (the ooze super-theory is a little much) I definitely agree with them that Spoiler Vickers' death was ridiculous and pointless....but sometimes death is meaningless and random. I did spend the entire sequence wondering what compels idiots to run in line instead of out of the way I think that was the biggest failing - given how every write up described the film as being "a locked up secret" ... they gave all they could in the trailers and TV spots. It killed me that a week ago, a spot during the playoffs revealed: Spoiler Shaw, Engineer, and squid-hugger's final throw down
Interesting analysis but one part loses me. Spoiler That being Jesus. It's a bit contradictory IMO. Not that HE would be an emissary for the Engineers, but that his death would piss them off to the point of destroying us. If that's one of the themes, then it definitely plays into the context of the story of Jesus. He suffered, died and rose again to save us from our sins. He himself is an example of self-sacrifice (humanity did not murder him so much as he chose death; he allowed us to kill him...if you are to follow the biblical story). On the cross, he was struck in his abdomen by a spear, yet another example of a life-giver with his abdomen torn open. So it makes more sense that He chose to come down to earth, on His own accord or perhaps at the request of His creator (remember Shaw said if the Engineers created us, who created the Engineers). That the Engineers already planned to destroy us and He came to sacrifice Himself, to save us from them. Maybe the Engineers are only the tip of the iceberg. oooh... Spoiler Maybe the Engineers were given the tools to create life. Use of the word is interesting. After all an engineer is someone who is given knowledge and skills needed to construct, create and design. They were given the technology to spread life throughout the universe. But not necessarily the power to destroy. They didn't like how humanity was growing up so they decided to take matters into their own hands, only they ended up killing themselves.
Exactly what I told my wife. I did like the movie. It just was about 20 or 30 minutes too short. Ridley Scott has had studio interference before. Seems like he jumped to the chase; the studio won't make cuts, and he'll give us a Director's Version.
The movie was enjoyable on the surface but the more I think about the plot holes, inconsistency of some of the characters, the completely unscientific processes involved in the premise of the film and especially the religious references (and that is putting it mildly if the article linked above is correct) the more disgusted i feel with Ridley Scott.
I think it's interesting to return to this viral promotion from several months back, featuring a young Weyland at a TED-like conference: <iframe width="640" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/GROrp3XBRrE" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> It goes back to the Lawrence of Arabia scene referenced in the movie, favored by the android. Lawrence takes the Promethean fire, and extinguishes it in his fingers. "How do you do that? Doesn't it hurt?" "The trick is not minding that it hurts..." Each of the creators in the film (Space Jockeys to man, man to android, man to Alien, each father/mother to child) must ultimately destroy their creations, or face extinction by them. The trick is not minding that it hurts to do so.
Just got back from the movie and good but not great sums it up for me. The previous comments that it was a beautiful movie but messed up plot was the impression that I got also. Like some others it really seemed like a lot was cut out of it and will plan on seeing the extended version when it comes out on DVD. One thing that can be said is that it definitely seems like a movie with some big ideas and deep thoughts but the execution of those ideas often seem kind of clunky and hamfisted in the story. Also it was much faster paced than I thought with little exposition and build up and at times it seemed like some scenes were just unnecessary except for more action.
Same here. I want to go watch this movie again with all these references in mind. I feel like a lot just went over my head.
I haven't seen the movie yet. And I've tried to keep blinders on for any spoilers what-so-ever but treated myself to reading the last spoiler-less 3 pages. So forgive me if someone else has already suggested this, but would Prometheus fall relative to Alien not as a prequel, but could Ridley be pulling a 'Tarantino Universe' situation??? Like someone else said here, did anyone else find tie-ins with blade runner as well???
It's pretty obvious this been trim off from 20 to 30 mins. Even Noomi Rapace confirmed that her longer scene vs the Engineer been cut. Spoiler I mean when Noomi picked up the axe you would expect something to happen but nothing happen between her vs the Engineer. Another thing that I've noticed is that is that there is 2 version of the Engineer vs Noomi vs tentacle beast. Because I remembered some spoiler viral clips show us a burned face of an Engineer attacking Shaw but we didn't get that version but got a version with a perfect porcelain wax like face of the Engineer. Charlize Theron also mention a couple of her scenes been cut such as her reflecting on what she has done when she burn Holloway. So pretty much character development was left on the cutting room floor.
Actually - Spoiler The right side of his face was pretty burned up, he was in no way "perfect" like he was upon wake up Just saw it for the second time, in RealD 3D. For those asking, I felt the IMAX 3D was a much more enjoyable viewing experience. Perfect dead center seats for both, but the film and the 3D were a near 10 in IMAX and just above an 8 by comparison in RealD. My opinion. Seeing it a second time, the incongruences stood out a lot more and were much harder to brush under a rug. It's possible much could be explained by what the directors chose not to reveal to us...but it honestly just seemed sloppy and wrong. In particular: Spoiler Why were the Jockeys seeking refuge in the head-tomb...and why were NONE of them in there? Is there a second chamber accessible in there? More...we see the 4 aliens getting set for take off....so why didn't they? We're left with one single guy in stasis and no apparent reason for the aborted take off sequence. What went "to pot" in there? And yes, the video recording holograms were far too wedged in awkwardly as a directors deus ex machina
THANK YOU! Finally a simple f$%^ing answer from someone who has seen both 3D technologies. For a movie this popular, not one single Google search had someone sharing your experience. Hopefully other people will read your post. Repped.
Saw the movie. I avoid watching too many trailers but this movie did not live up to the trailer. That being said, it is worth watching and very enjoyable. Now for a more detailed review: Spoiler I did not care for the opening scene. Felt it revealed too much about the Engineers. I thought it was odd the characters signed up for a multi-year mission with no forehand knowledge of what was going on. A somewhat acceptable small flaw. I hated the last scene. Without that scene the movie would have been set perfectly for a sequel to introduce the Alien 'alien'. Instead it revealed to anyone without forehand knowledge that this was an Alien prequel that it is in fact an Alien prequel. Some minor inconvenience with the 'rock' storm. How could wind speeds high enough to move rocks like that not either tear everyone apart or throw them off their feet? And the geologist's return was kind of pointless, would have been better had we not known what happened to him.
Okay for my spotty analysis (meaning random ideas popping into my head/thoughts/questions.....SPOILER) "*SPOILER*" Everything was stunning in the movie and very beautiful, the first thing that made me eek was how as soon as they entered the planet they went to the spaceship. I probably missed a point but how did they know immedietly where to go? Guessing because maybe they already looked at the planet from satellite? Why not investigate or look around elsewhere. How did the Dr. know exactly where to tell the pilot to land ect... Second point, like everyone else who was annoyed with the two lost engineers who decided it was smart to look around/play around with the alien.... Look at it this way, there is supposed to be a transition on how to get the action started. Either by investigating too much or just being stupid. Honestly the whole crew from top to bottom didn't feel like they were the people for the job particularly as they made too many mistakes and couldn't handle pressure. Back to the movie. I was on the edge of my seat when David was leading them inside the spaceship to the big guy. As soon as he spoke to him i was like  (like something is going to happen! and they will interact..."this is going to be so deep" i thought)...NOPE! SteroidRage! Head ripped off and im going "no why?!" Just leaves so many questions to be answered. As for David who has no emotion, was it his plan to infect the Dr. because he pissed him off (how does he get mad if hes a robot) or was there something else behind it? The whole surgery machine was crazy how shes able to go back to normal after it. Another thing i think i didnt catch was, what did Weyland and David know that the others didn't? David said they they were stopped from making it to earth because....? Or is that to come in the sequel? I actually enjoyed the whole religion aspect and meaning of life questions with faith. Awesome movie as i said and been on my mind since watching it! Def want to catch it again! Even with the cheesy faults at hand this was still a greatly made film and a jaw dropping experience!
