http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/draft/2012/06/twins-rockies-mets-drafted-most-players-in-ba-500/ Interesting article from Baseball America. They counted the number of top 500 BA prospects each team drafted; the Astros are in the middle of the pack (12th/30). The Blue Jays, Twins, Cardinals, Astros, and Pirates all had 6 of the top 100 prospects. The Astros do however have 9 of the top 110 prospects, at least 2 more than any other team. This suggests we have a very top heavy but not particularly deep draft class. Minnesota on the other hand has 6 top 100 prospects and 23 total top 500 prospects, a draft class with top talent AND depth. I'm extremely happy with the draft, even moreso if we can sign all of the tough-signs, but this really puts it in perspective how well you have to draft just to have a good, not great system. It especially highlights how badly the terrible older drafts set us back.
Even if we did have the worst record David Stern would still find a way to give us the 14th overall pick
you have to be joking. discerning between good and great in baseball is damn near impossible. it's ridiculously difficult. you're picking high school kids from across the country whom you've only seen against other high school kids. in the NBA draft, you're picking international talent you've specifically scouted and college kids the whole country has seen play against NCAA talent. it's apples/oranges. not even close. the margins between good and great is 1 more hit in every 10 at bats. go watch one game, and you get 1/3 of that sample size in all likelihood. one pick in the NBA can turn a franchise around. one pick in MLB might help your team in 2 years if you're lucky. i can not imagine making the argument that baseball GM's have it easier than NBA GMs come draft day.
It's interesting, but I wouldn't put too much stock in it. First, what will matter is who gets signed. A guy like Travers is probably highly ranked, but it sounds like there's no shot of signing him (not a bad gamble in the 39th round though). Likewise, the Cardinals had a ton more high picks, so they ought to be on this list. I also wouldn't put too emphasis on their top 500 cut off. That's basically 16+ rounds of payers. I don't think the talent difference in a 14th vs a 20th rounder is that apparent, so at some point it's all about scouting and then development. For all we know, the Astros picked 30 guys in their top 500 prospects, and then we'll find out how our scouts did relatively to Baseball America's. I think you're most likely to find your impact players in the top 100 or so, and while teams will have differences of opinion on ranking, my guess is most teams would agree on about 90% of who the top 50 or 100 players are. I'd rather see us show up frequently in that range than have what one publication thinks is a deep draft for filling out our minor league roster.
Also.... this man surely played some role in the draft. This is Sig Mejdal, the Director of Decision Sciences for the Houston Astros.
Brian McTaggart @brianmctaggart Astros sign OF Aplin (5th round), OF Joyce (12th round), LHP Holmes (13th round), IF Sclafani (14th round), RHP Gonzalez (15th round)… Brian McTaggart @brianmctaggart Astros also sign C Richard Gingras (18th round), RHP John Neely (30th round) and C M.P. Cokinos (31st round)
Yeah he seemed like a pick to save money, how do you put the tweets into the gray boxes? I'm on my iPad so idk if that's different
For quotes, you press the "@123" key, then there should be bracket keys. This may sound a bit random, but... you're Woodlands'stro from TCB, right? I'm "La Verdad" there.
no it isn.t...mlb drafting and developing is tougher than the nba easily. 40 rounds and a minor league compared to 2 rounds?
If you don't have a top pick, NBA is harder. Though ability to trade picks makes a difference as well. Just by volume the MLB has a better chance of hitting on a star.
Go back and look at all the pre-draft hype, rumors, mocks, etc.... Have you learned nothing? Lists are meaningless.
So in what area did Ludnow do well in the draft that the Rockets can emulate? If you don't say something concrete it's hard for others to know what you are talking about. I am sure that if there is something the Astros do that can be emulated in the nba. Morey would be happy to learn.
There is a bigger chance to bust as a first round pick in baseball than in the NBA. Your scouting skills really show in baseball compared to basketball which has 2 rounds only. Just because you are a top 5-10 pick in baseball doesnt mean you will pan out. look at guys like tim beckham, matt bush, luke hocheaver (sp), and brad lincoln.
Maybe your luck shows. All of those teams have made great picks. Even in basketball you could mention plenty of busts. Basketball is easier in the top 5, but not beyond that. Doesn't really matter. Two very different processes.
