Teams are allowed to make trades as soon as their season ends, but for a variety of reasons you usually see most teams waiting until draft night or the day before.

1.) Teams are looking for the best deal possible and a team that still in the playoffs might be willing to give up 'more' than the other teams that are already eliminated.
2.) Draft boards vary from team to team, so often times GMs at this point of time will say we will do deal X, if player X is or isn't there when we pick.
3.) You can't be without a first round pick in two future consecutive years. So a team that has already dealt their 2013 pick can not trade their 2012 pick, unless they get a 2012 pick from another team.
The 'loophole', if you will, is that you simply agree to a trade beforehand and let the other team make the selection for you, before making the trade official.

I'm probably forgetting a few other key points, but you get the idea.

The 5-10 range is where we need to be on draft day. With guys like Beal, Harrison, Drummond, Henson and Jones III who could go in this range any combo of picks here with any combo of these guys would be a great move towards the future for our team.

Everyone calls this draft deep, but they don't see the star power that say the 03 draft produced. While I would agree that from the jump I would not expect the same output from the top guys in this draft as we saw out of Lebron, Carmelo, Dwayne and Bosh, I do see just as many stars emerging from this draft but not as soon as they did in 03.

If Morey and Les drop the ball on this, it better not be because they are chasing after a disgruntled super star. A number eight pick would put us in a position to grab a solid big man.

They're interested in Iguodala and Gay, Kevin Martin isn't there guy, there's no way they would want him, especially when they can pick Lamb/PJ3, what they might want is Kyle Lowry + 16th pick, they want Lowry + Waiters.

They won't get an all-star with a pick 8. Let's not overrate an 8th pick.

They may want AI or Gay, but The Big Facilitator can step in and help make the trade more economically feasible for both teams.

Try a Toronto/Philly/Houston or Toronto/Memphis/Houston trade in the machine and see what you come up with.

You don't know what type of player the 8th pick will be. Your crystal ball is lying.

Do those respective teams have the capspace that the Rockets have?

    This.

They're looking for a vet SF like Gay or Iguodala. Whether they can get that or not, who knows, probably not.

The table is the average expected all star games per pick as derived from historical data from the NBA drafts from 1990-2007. So getting an All Star from the 8th pick is not out of the question.

The number is 0.640 (expected all star appearances for the 8th pick).

No, but they might be able to land a young shot blocker, a defender who can be with the team for the next decade. Considering how the Rockets screwed up by not tanking, to walk away with a decent big would be the equivalent of turning lead into gold.

You never know, but either way it's almost guaranteed to be a much more promising player than the annual #14 role player and whatever we get a 16.

Martin for Minny's pick (#18), and i would be very excited about that. I think it's a no brainer for both teams, but i don't know how you make the salaries work.

I can't see Toronto giving up #8 for Martin on a 1-yr deal and the 16th pick; let's get real people.

Martin or Lowry + 14th or 16th for the 8th is a good trade.

Lowry would aide them, but we could probably get more for Lowry from a team that has a legit star they can contend with.

If Williams doesn't resign with the Nets, we could probably swing something with them or the Knicks (if they don't sign Dragic or Nash).

Clutch Fans and their delusions, I tell you.

I might could see it if Lowry or Parsons were on the table. Not Martin. If it were Martin, then they might as well keep their draft pick.

Who do you think can play that role in this draft?
I like Henson as a 4 to complement D-Mo,but I wouldn't reach out to him at the 8th.
