I find this line of thinking to be considerably misguided and somewhat self-delusional. To wit:

To even make a hypothetical trade for Howard, the Rox would have to ship out a number of players+draft picks and in return they'd wind with Howard for ONE year and Hedo. I'm no Bima but that would add a lot of salary just to get a guy for one year.

If they really want to rebuild, then just go out and rebuild the team. You don't have to go through something as elaborate as renting Howard for one year to make that happen. And, with the weighted lottery, there is no guarantee that they would wind up with a high enough draft pick that would enable them to get that elusive "superstar".

It IS actually stupid to think that Howard would want to stay here and have to face the likes of Dallas, OKC, SA and coming soon: NO. By doing so, he would be aligning himself with the one team in the division that is not at the same competitive level as the others even with his presence on said team. For Howard that would mean moving over to the same situation he's facing now with the Heat. Oh yeah, I can see how this would appeal to him in a big way.

Yah except for the fact that we have lowry, martin and scola still on this team and their salary demands PT... and the team you just mentioned is slightly worse than what we put out last year...and wed prob get the 13th pick instead of 14...i guess that is an improvement.

How is it a long**** for us to acquire Dwight when in fact...

"ClutchFans reports Daryl Morey, Houston's General Manager, "was the last one standing in the Howard chase." Further, in the lead-up to the March 15th deadline, Rockets management "believed they were going to land Howard later that day."

Orlando elected not to trade Howard, but only because he agreed to waive the Early Termination Option in his contract. The ETO would have enabled him to become a free agent on July 1st, 2012, but after waiving it, he won't enter free agency until one year later. Had Howard not waived his ETO, ClutchFans reports, he would have indeed become a Houston Rocket."

It's an entirely different scenario now since he has already used his right to waive an ETO. Orlando will cash in and considering we were the last team standing at the deadline at last season's deadline means we had or currently have the best offer on the table.

Like i said, it's T-Mac to Hou and Francis to Orl trade v2.0

Options: Worst case scenario if Dwight leaves

2013 labeled "bad draft" - we get playoff excitement and finally the full rebuild - late first round pick

2014 draft - unknown draft stock - top 3 pick

    OR

2013 & 2014 - With the fourteenth pick... The Houston Rockets select......

Whats the definition of insanity again?

First if he leaves in 2013...which is highly unlikely because He would turn down a lot of money and im sure we put pieces around him. Wed prob have gotten dwill or possibly lure cp3 away in 2013...at worst we got several vertearns to sign with us because of Dwight.

However, if all that fails and he leaves in 2013 then we get our own pick that year...DUH... lol... it would be the year after dwight leaves that we get those draft picks...not to mention if we get howard and nothing else...but trade all that we prob will suck...about as much as the nets and at least get the 6th pick.

We have to take back bad contracts..

People forget that taking on bad contracts is one of our best trade packages...

Orlando doesnt want hedo anymore, we'll gladly accept his contract to cone with dwight...

Dont give me that we wont have salary room to sign dwill ****... what ever we take in (dwight, hedo) well send out...

We still have amnesty, so does orlando... orlando would gladly take martin because hes a 12mill expiring... probly wont want scola to avoid that contract... so either we trade scola or amnesty him...

Whil lakers can offer the best player, they cant offer the best package/flexibility in their rebuild... if they trade dwight for bynum, they are exactly in the same position theyre in now... when he reups his contract hell be on dwights pay level, and theyll still have the same crappy roster (with a lesser center) and the same bloated contracts...

We can give them a cheap lowry, an expiring martin, young talent in ppat, morris, bud, experienced big in dalembert, draft picks #14/#16/future dal 1st, and rights to sergio llull... they lose hedos contract, amnesty big baby... that is the best package for flexibility a rebuilding team needs going forward...

There is no team that can offer not only theyre players, but also theyre flexibility... we got both in bunches...

If I was Morey here'd be my asset ranking:

    1. Kyle Lowry (yes human beings are assets)
    2. The rights to Donatas Motiejunas
    3. #14 pick
    4. #16 pick
    5. Samuel Dalembert's contract (essentially allowing a team to shed 5-7 million for free once they decline his option)
    6. The rights to Sergio Llull
    7. Chandler Parsons
    8. Kevin Martin's expiring contract (this would be so much more valuable if we could actually play Martin next year and show people he's still good, so I doubt we trade this in the offseason)
    9. Luis Scola
    10. Patrick Patterson
    11. Marcus Morris
    12. The rights to Dallas' future top-20 protected pick
    13. An autographed poster of the Daryl Morey Turning Around meme
    14. Chase Budinger

To get Dwight Howard on a rental? Ask Orlando to choose any 5 of the above and it's theirs.

We're talking about the season AFTER he leaves, if he chooses to leave.

First: They dont want to rebuild... they want to obtain a STAR.... which is what Howard is...

Second: Howard would stay here if he had a running mate like DWILL or a CP3.....

Third: Do you really think these NBA players are afraid of the competition??? I imagine Dwight (the top C in the NBA) thinking, well that Division is just too difficult to compete with???????

    LMAO

Kevin Martin and his expiring contract is just our 8th ranked asset? Last time i checked, he led this team in scoring the past couple of years and given the right destination (a team with a dominant big that commands double teams), K-Mart would be lethal. There are not many many players who is more efficient than Martin, stats don't lie. Sure he's not the best defender but that's just nitpicking, really.

Lowry, martin, and Scola will be gone. If not at the draft, then at the deadline. If you have a young team that can compete how can that be a bad thing? Even players that are "guaranteed superstars" don't suddenly thrust their teams into immediate contention.

IT IS NOT ABOUT CAP SPACE! This is yet another in a continuing series of pie-in-the-sky, fantasy quick fixes that are so very popular on this BBS. It's that type of gambling mentality that led to the 2001 draft and the 2006 trade with Orlando both of which worked out very well (not). So let's just say that you are right and they tear apart the team, take on salary, get Howard for ONE year AND magically get D Williams to sign here (although you should explain just WHY Williams would sign here if Howard could leave after one year). Even with all that, they would still be no match for OKC so what's the point of doing all of this again?.

Attainment is believable. Retainment is the stretch. My theory: These two will eventually end up in Dallas.

Are we even allowed to trade #14, since our next years pick is promised to another?

    Maybe...maybe not.

Will Howard walk away from $30M?

    Jerry West doesn't think so.

"I honestly think I'd call their bluff," West said in an interview on 710 ESPN's Mason and Ireland show Thursday, not mentioning Howard specifically. "I really would, because I don't think any agent or player is going to leave $30 million on the table.

"I just don't believe that's going to happen

    - Jerry West
