Brainwashed may be a little strong, but there is no doubt about the effectiveness of the marketing.

Families feel obligated to go. I personally feel anyone who willfully pays to go to Orlando to walk around in a plastic fantasy land for a week has been a successful target of that marketing campaign.

Orlando, for anything other than a business trip, is not a destination spot that I enjoy. I would much rather spend that time camping, exploring the real world, at the beach, etc. I view it as vegas for kids and there is no doubt that Disney and Vegas are similar polarizing entities; you either love them or you can't wait to get out.

But hey, that's America. We can agree to disagree. (even though I'm right)

Again you may not want to go to Orlando. I wouldn't either unless I was going to Disney.

I go camping several times a year. I surf, hike, mountain climb, play basketball, softball, tennis, and do all sorts of real stuff, but I like Disney as well.

Because I like Disney World doesn't mean that I don't also appreciate other outdoor activities.

One of the cool things I saw the last time I was at Disney was some of the places where they grow most of their own food that they use in the parks, and there are even nature related activities to do there as well.

It's fine that you don't like Disney, and yes Disney markets. They should, any business does it. It doesn't make them evil. I've never felt any pressure to go or have a positive opinion of Disney. I'm sorry if you have felt that pressure.

I have friends that love Disney, and friends that aren't interested at all in it. There isn't anything wrong with either group.

what they need to do is lower ticket prices.

100 bucks a pop is redurkulous.

The whole idea is to keep the locals out.

in Anaheim they offer a seasonal TwoFer discount to California residents. you get entry into The Magic Kingdom and California Adventure with a 1 month deadline with the price of one admission.

the whole idea is to get you to come back.

like I was saying earlier, you can bring your own food in and not spend a dime.

Oh, I was thinking of disneyworld. Where it seems they actively try to get locals to stay away. They even shut down Pleasure Island because it was all local kids going. It's all part of that "island" thing they do there.

Fun Fact: Even from the tallest point in the park, you can't see any non-disney property.

Could someone with kids shed some light on a question of mine?
Why is it necessary for companies to stop advertizing their products? Isn't this really a parental problem? Children don't make money. Children can't buy food. Mommy and Daddy need to stop spoiling kids and feed the them right. Is it they are too afraid to be the bad guy? They advertize to the children, to get them excited and then parents have to fight their tantrums and just give up, I assume. Wouldn't most problems go away if people just were better parents?

I've never been nor taken my kid, and although deep down, I pretty much agree with you, I find myself not wanting to sound like you.

Every time I hear of the First Lady and the national War Against Obesity, I can't help but think of this from the the HBO series Veep, in which the vice-president is told that her green jobs initiative is dead, and she must now focus upon the obesity epidemic instead.

The problem is letting the government or Michelle Obama define what constitutes healthy food or junk food. She is not an authority. I do get the sense she thinks being overweight is a serious character flaw.

Cereal, yogurt (the nonfat kind), and apples will spike your blood sugar and increase insulin resistance over time. Yet they are pushing it as healthy food.

An apple has as much sugar as a snickers bar.

Agreed, but there should be full admission by any company about what their food contains or does not contain. There shouldn't be restrictions except in the most severe of cases, but there should be extreme sanctions against any company that does not fully and candidly disclose its ingredients, and the quality of those ingredients, to the consumer.

Yes, but the sugar is not absorbed the same because of the presence of other qualities in the apple. You're comparing apples and candy bars right now.

(apologies for the double post - I forgot to respond to this part in the previous post).

I'm very cynical toward things generally. As thrill ride over kiddie sh** as can be. And can say Disney parks are well done at the element it goes for.

Its as good an attempt as any trying to be the "Happiest Place on Earth". Despite the denouncements of the Disney Devil Corp, I don't think it tries to shove itself in your face. At least at DisneyLAND.

Its is NOT a "manly man" place. Not a place for an all-bro squad to hang out. But with the right blend of people and unassuming frame of mind, it can be a surprisingly "good spirit" experience.

If you break down anything into just the framework, lots of things can look lame.

"Movies": You just pay for an overpriced ticket, expensive crappy food, just to site there forever. While everyone's making noises interrupting the movie. And you can't rewind the movie...

"Camping": Paying for all kinds of gear. Outdoors in some crappy elements. Bugs, poisonous plants, ANIMALS that can bite. No tv, no real entertainment. Takes forever to set up, all kinds of lifting. bland food over a fire...

"Rockets game": Pricey tickets, no buzz in the building, no stars to watch, everyone blocks your view...

    etc

Thats like I said in the NY soft drink regulation thread. They're doing the measures at places they CAN do it. But its places people very rarely attend anyway.

Something like school lunches is significant. Or sending a good message to the kids in advertising.

It can still be seen as a first step precursor toward the bigger aim of regulating EVERYTHING. But there might be some shootings if you take away ADULT purchases of junk food from groceries. Plus its possible to overeat fruits and veggies and gain weight.

I'm glad that even though Disney suited to your sensibilities, I think it's awesome that you can appreciate what they're doing, and what they're going for.

Like I said I do love Disney, but I think I like, equally looking at the craftsmanship, artistry, innovation, and skill that goes into making it the place that it is. It's what sets it apart from other places.

I like 6 flags as well. A few years ago I had season passes to that and Universal. I like all kinds of things, though Disney is my favorite.

Are you saying I shouldn't eat apples? How would I keep the doctor away, then?

DisneyWorld is good, I went to Orlando, in 93 (I was 8) and I had a great time. also I remember when I was in elementary school, they had a trip to Orlando, and it wasnt that expensive.

I dont know the prices now, but I think you could look for a great deal on the internet.

but yeah, DisneyWorld, is more for the kids, and family-oriented.

and about the brainwash, its just like any other product, they sell you something, with an ad, trying to convince you their product is great.
