Which stage are you currently in? Me personaly, I just made my first move to 'career mode' several months back. I worked a related job for three years and finally got a position in... You guessed it HR, in the Oil and Gas industry. Just curious about some of yal's goals and and how close or far you may be from them. FYI, this is my first thread so...
finally had my own business last 7 years and live in California like I was dreamin.. now the stupid business is not making enough. so looking to maybe work for man again or continue the small business and keep fighting.
your career is no longer one long job, but a culmination of several inter-related jobs. So by career I am taking it you mean that you have started a career path in a profession of your choosing.
Both. Just finished the CPA exam a few months ago and I've been at a big four for about a year and a half since graduating (longer I suppose if you count my two summers). I definitely don't plan on staying in public much longer, but I'm not sure what direction I want go in after this. Maybe internal audit. Maybe slowly transition into management in some capacity, not sure how to do so. Definitely not tax. My parents were really great with me, they let me stay at home until just a few months ago so I've been able to save a decent amount of scratch. Depending on how things go with my brother, I may take some time off, go on a road trip or do some community service projects or something, just to reflect and decide what I really want to do.
Everything is a job since I have no desire to move up in the corporate world. I would pick up garbage if it paid me 100K more than I'm making now.
HR isnt really a career or job. Just some jackasses that made up a title to get paid and make work that much harder for everyone else.
Kind of at the start of my career. I've been at the stage where I am for four years. I take a test for an additional certification on Monday, and I start school to advance to a slightly different field in August (one year of schooling). Ultimately, from there, I would like to do another program that takes about 18 months to complete, and that would be the final stage to me obtaining the job goal that I want to, and set for myself about 5 years ago.
Lol, I feel the same way, was gonna bite my tongue and wait till someone else said it. But rock on with your HR job, TS! You will piss plenty of people off on this long journey you have just begun.
I put career, though I'm not where I want to be yet. I'm also in O&G, but in a (business of) technology role, so there's no telling what I'll be doing in 5-10 years. I could be a team lead or I could be in the same position or a completely different position. Or I could be unemployed if the price of gas doesn't go up..... My degree is in the entirely unrelated field of economics, so maybe I'll be doing something with that.
I've seen plenty of bad HR depts and HR people, but they do important stuff. I think my current company doesn't have enough HR people.
No one to complain to about your wife hitting you with a frying pan during one of your classes? To the OP, Not meeting your hiring targets? Looking for new leads?
Audit? Could anything be more boring? I love tax. If I were to do anything else directly in our profession, it would be forensic.
I kind of get the sense that working internal audit in the private sector would be more interesting though, and possibly a good springboard for getting into a management role. As for tax, I got stuck with a number of NFPs last year, and would be more than happy to never see another form 990 in my life.
