Did you know from 2007-2011, the Astros spent more on draft picks than the Phillies, Twins, Dodgers, Rockies, Mets, Angels, Braves, Marlins, & White Sox? That time frame of course includes the all time miserable draft that was 2007. The Pirates spent the most. I'm glad to see where it has gotten them.

Pirates have Cole, Taillon, Alvarez(if he turns it around), Bell, and most likely Appel. That's an elite group of players. Did you know that those teams also had much higher draft picks? Anyways our drafts have gotten us an OK catcher right now(overdraft), a pretty good young pitcher that looks to be a #3 pitcher, a speedy 2B that's hitting a spectacular .250 in single-A(overdraft), a SS that was turning it around in the hot hitting Lancaster. Only plus is Springer. Whatever I'm not here to argue about this, we spend more on them but yet their farms are ranked higher than ours(even phillies after we have taken 4 of their top prospects)

Never mind found it. Sure some of those team haven't spent a lot on the draft, but they do spend a lot on international FA? The braves have an amazing group of pitching prospects, the twins signed Sano who will be really good, the phillies seem to be really good at finding players later in the draft. Oh well it's all new times and the future is bright

the common denominator when the Astros win and when they lose, when their farm system is elite (ca 2000-2001ish) and when it is toilite, is people whining or arguing about spending.

bottom line: I couldn't care less if they just win.

Not big spenders. Smart spenders. That is the secret.

Looks like the Astros were smart spenders this time around, but only time will tell.

Based on cardpire's comment that would mean Luhnow would be benifitting from Wade's drafts. He made it seem as if Luhnow has turned the franchise around in 3 months when in fact we won't see any significant dividends from Luhnow's drafts and player development for at least 2 years. I'm hoping for the best and the Astros actually have my attention with this new regime.

We may start seeing Luhnow's player development sooner than that. Luhnow has said that the Astros will be emphasizing player development going forward. There are a handful of highly drafted players this year (Seaton, Folty, Mier) that have re-established their prospect status. Coincidence?

Not a huge Ed Wade fan...but prying away Cosart and Singleton will end up being something I think we'll be thanking him for.

actually, i have brought to light that we should not forget about wade's contributions on his way out the door multiple times in other threads. throw in an assist to wade on the barmes signing which enabled us to draft mccullers.

maybe i overstated things and am getting a little too excited, but i just love the activity of luhnow, and the new culture/feel he has immediately brought to the organization. i understand that he had the 1st pick to work with, but i don't think it's a stretch to say (assuming at least 2 of the 3 "unsignable" highschoolers do in fact sign) that this is the best draft we've had in a long long time. throw in the three under-the-radar trades that he's already made, giving away our garbage for prospects, and a SS who is already (sadly) the best hitting SS we have had in 15 years and possibly ever, and it's easy to get giddy about what is going on. all that in his first 4 months on the job.

All are repeating the same level, and no longer younger than most of their competition. Certainly he doesn't seem as inclined to overmatch our prospects.

don't forget santana. and the signing of barmes/spinning of him into a sandwich pick which got us mccullers. and his regime's drafting of springer. i'm still not a fan of the return on the bourn trade, but i can certainly live with the aggregate of that and the pence trade.

wade had a great final year as GM for us.

Wade was actually a good GM for us. When Drayton wanted us to keep contending, he traded trash for players that were very good for us. When Drayton was ready to rebuild, he got good returns on his veterans (not really his fault injuries lowered Berkman/Oswalt's values).

If Ed Wade would just avoid handing out contracts (although the original Myers deal was wonderful). Ultimately it is what makes him a very mediocre GM. I think Luhnow has the potential to be great. He's made 3 trades, all of which were good moves (Melancon deal was a beast move, while his other two deals got younger minor leaguers for AAAA players). Draft #1 looks like a smashing success on paper. After the signing period we will know how well he did in terms of value, and then we have to wait a few years to see how the successful the scouting/metrics were.

I actually think the Bourn trade was ok.
Schafer has been serviceable and Clemens and Oberholtzer could turn into very strong arms..even if its out of the bullpen.

I saw 2 new pages to this thread since last night, and I got excited thinking there was some good news about our picks. But, no, instead we have bickering about the old regime.

Don't expect anything until tomorrow. They will wait until the draft is completed.
