Just took the kids to Disneyland on Monday, and we love it.

Disneyland should not be compared to Astroworld as they really are a different genre. Astroworld/Six Flags are usually for older kids and young adults. Disneyland is designed for younger kids and a little older Adults. It's nice not walking around a theme park and feeling like I am in Gang Land.

Not even the ones that keep your food clean and disease free?

Not the same topic, but I agree with this.

It's actually a fairly cheap (comparatively) vacation. There are numerous ways to avoid the long lines, and there's way more to the parks than just fantasy land.

It may not be for everyone. I think people who appreciate the innocence of childhood basically will love Disney, and those with no connection to that, or desire to appreciate it won't.

It isn't a thrill ride park like Astroworld was. It's done far better and on a much larger scale with a few thrill rides, but their target audience are people who appreciate and enjoy something about that innocent fun I keep mentioning.

People who appreciate the craftsmanship and artistry that goes into creating that atmosphere will also get more out of Disney parks. Some people don't care about that stuff and don't get a kick out of it.

you didn't fly, but i know people who do such as my co-worker. i also know it's really a place for kids so that's why i probably can't relate. i never cared for it as a kid either though. and if it's a social status then i guess i'll always be a peon.

prices for disneyland (and california adventure) shot up last week like crazy - the pass I had last year is now 100 dollars more and the premium pass is 650 dollars. The prices are just crazy - in comparison the most expensive annual theme park pass after Disneyland here in so cal is under 150 probably more like around 100.

the one thing that digusted me at the disney theme parks is that they sell these huge legs of turkey that people just go around eating like its a renaissance fair. They still sell churros and sell corn on the cob as well.

They may have "healthier" options now at the park which is good but sounds like they'll still have the "not so good" options but it will be an option now -- chances are you'll still be able to get the crazy sweets there and all.

Not sure why you say it's a "social status" thing. As vacations go, it's relatively cheap. It's clean, it's fun, it's generally safe, it's family oriented and there are a variety of parks in the Disney family.

But, do they have a Rainbow bread store where you can pick up half a loaf before leaving the park!?

No idea why that was such a "cool" thing to do at Astroworld, but we did it every time. smh

Does the turkey leg disgust you because you don't like seeing people eat a turkey leg or does it disgust you because it's a turkey leg?

When I was a kid, it was a full "mini" loaf and cost 10 cents.

Yeah, the mini's! I seriously miss the Astroworld of the 80's.

The first time, we flew Southwest, and it was cheap. The last two times to Disney World, we drove. We got a group rate with other families at a vacation home and we ended up paying about $300 for an entire week of that home and all its amenities while not in the park.

For DisneyLand, we drove and stayed at the Econo Lodge behind the park but we booked way in advance. We didn't pay too much. I think it was about $70 a night, and we got vouchers that gave us many more discounts.

It's not expensive, man. You will have a good time. Look at it positively. It's like a normal vacation but with the Disney touch.

Mr. bobrek, I love a turkey leg and will go buck-wild on that with mustard no matter if it's downtown Houston, Wal-mart, Reinassance Festival (never been), or Disney.

Bob Iger, CEO of Disney, announced new company food policies, which correspond with first lady Michelle Obama’s public cause.

Disney, the parent company of ABC, will be revising menus at its theme parks and resorts, and will also be curbing the advertising of junk food on its television and radio programs aimed at children.

“With this new initiative, Disney is doing what no major media company has ever done before in the U.S. — and what I hope every company will do going forward,” Obama said in a statement.

Iger is a longtime supporter and donor for Democratic candidates, having made, among other contributions, a $35,800 donation to the Obama Victory Fund 2012, according to Federal Election Commission records.

In October 2011 the New York Post reported that, according to Iger’s friends and associates, the Disney CEO’s “next act may include public service. There is speculation that he could run for governor of California, mayor of Los Angeles or even mayor of New York.”

This is not the first time that Michelle Obama has partnered up with Disney. In February 2012 at Disney World, she hosted athletic and dance games for children at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports complex.

The new Disney junk food ban is a significant part of the first lady’s nutrition and exercise agenda. Her “Let’s Move” campaign has urged schools to alter their menus and fitness programs.

    No, I'm not kidding.

I'm also not a fan of Vegas. Astroworld in the 80's was as cool a place for a kid as existed on the planet. Disney, in the 80's, was just about the lamest.

I appreciate that there are difference of opinion, but that does not make mine less valid than yours. I try and keep my daughter away from that crap. And I do view it as crap.

As far as vacations go I cannot think of a more horrible place to go than Orlando. Talk about soulless.

I must be slow today. I don't see anywhere in any of Swoly's posts in this thread where he said it was a status thing.

macalu, I got on almost all the rides, saw lots of shows, etc. I didn't stand in long lines (used FastPass for the rides that allowed it and you would do that at any other theme park, anyway), I didn't pay an exorbitant amount of money to fly there (I drove, spent considerably less on gas), and didn't "just walk around in a fantasy land."
