When it gets to a point like this, you forget the consequences of losing and just focus on doing your job the best you can. Spoelstra seems to know the world won't end if they lose (and he's fired) and he's at peace with the possibility. It shows that even though he may not be the right man for the job, failure won't destroy him. Spoelstra is a grounded person who can stay calm under extreme pressure. I guarantee you he will be far and away the most highly sought assistant coach over the summer if he's fired.
Everyone circlejerks about SVG being cool even though he's getting canned. But people are going to jump Spo's ass about it. Series isn't even over people.
If he has any gas left in the tank, wouldn't it be ideal for Phil Jackson to coach the Heat if they lose to the Celtics or not with the championship? I wonder.
Well, when Jackson pulled his name out of Magic's search for a coach, hypothetically, I felt the only team he would hold out for is the Heat. That is, if he has the itch to coach again, ever.. Not sure why Riley wouldn't want to hire him regardless of their coaching "feud" from the 90's.
If the Heat can make it to the finals, then I think the coach stays. If the Heat lose to Boston, then I think the coach goes. However, if the Heat fail to win, I do don't blame the coach. I blame the three players that demand a salary that handcuffs the team in regard to building a balanced supporting cast of players.
Spoelstra is not a very good coach. I'd maybe even argue bad. This isn't a knee jerk reaction. Many teams would struggle when they don't have their 3rd best player, and players 4-10 are average. But, anyone watching Spoelstra over the last 2 years knows he's in over his head. He can't design an offense for his life. His control of ego's and emotions doesn't seem to be special. I have no doubt he runs tight practices and instills solid defensive principals. It's not clear he has any ability to make strategic in game changes. Lebron James, Dwayne Wade + 3 of me should make deep playoff runs every year. Hate aside, you're talking about the best all around talent, perhaps ever, and a no doubt, first ballet HOF who's already led his team to a championship, and has a history of being clutch. Both of whom are solid defenders. But they have James, Wade + other actual NBA players, as opposed to 3 of me. Chalmers has gotten worse. Miller has never fit well. Battier has gotten worse. James Jones has gotten worse. Haslem has gotten worse. Even Bosh got worse. They clearly don't have Thunder type talent all around. They'd be better if they had Harden off the bench, too. But they are not without talent. Maybe it's a mesh that just can't work - Wade + James - but I don't think so. I think it is up to the head coach to make it work, especially offensively.
