Very nice! I thought he would sign quick, but man! I've been swamped at work the last couple of hours, and haven't checked the draft in a while. I can't believe we got Virant! I wanted him with the 1st pick in the 2nd round today, lol. Will he be a hard signing?
Throwaway pick. No one took him because they were essentially certain that he would not sign. It sounds like if we have some extra cash leftover from our negotiations with everybody else, we could hold it in front of Virant to see if he'll bite on it, but realistically this is the 11th round so the Astros must have told themselves the gamble was worth it. Most likely nothing comes of this pick.
Considering how far Virant has dropped, he might end up going to UCLA. It's worth the risk, if McCullers doesn't sign. Keith Law:
I don't knowing they will sign him ... But it was smart if they weren't gonna pick him in the second to pick him after the 10th .. That way if he doesn't sign it won't count against our bonus pool ... He is probably the second best arm we drafted behind McCullers and if he signs ten thats getting a top 100 player in the draft
I read a Keith Law article this morning that said Virant would be an "impossible sign outside of the Top 20" and didn't expect him to be drafted in the early rounds because of that. I think we're at a stage in the draft though, that if we don't sign him there are no ramifications. Our draft has consisted a lot of the consensus Top 100 guys.
Round 12, Pick 369: Terrell Joyce, LF, Florida State College (Not sure if that's the Florida State we all know)
As a Texas baseball fan, I can tell you it happens every year. We lose recruits who are deemed "unsignable" on a yearly basis.
Upon further review, he is not from Florida State University. He is, however, committed to Virginia Tech. Joyce's Stats

All the time. Off the top of my head, last year with Josh Bell who actually sent a letter to every team saying not to draft him because he was going to college. Wasn't Ross Seaton also someone considered highly unsignable?
