Madison City Clerk tells me turnout is on pace to hit 119% in Madison, adding "That would be unprecedented." Turnout in excess of 100% is possible because Wisconsin allows same-day voter registration. The numbers suggest that many people are registering at the polls. Heavy turnout in Madison, a liberal stronghold, would likely benefit Democrat Tom Barrett. http://thinkprogress.org/?mobile=nc
I heard today that a group in Wisconsin (didn't hear who they supported) sent out mailing to people that included their neighbors names, addresses and voting records as a way to scare them into voting this time. Edit: just googled and found this: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052702303830204577446353605396764.html?mod=googlenews_wsj
The state of Wisconsin's election board issued a statement on it saying the lists were purchased. http://www.wqow.com/story/18700631/gab-responds-to-greater-wisconsin-mailer
Hum, so it lists whether someone voted but not for whom. And people have used the lists in the past for political mailers so nothing wrong with that I guess and it's not illegal so... Sounds like a good way to get people out the vote.
I think whether you voted, and which primary you voted in, are a matter of public record. Could be wrong, and I don't have time to check right now, but if that's the case, it would be perfectly (or imperfectly) legal. What is far worse is $60,000,000+ dollars, overwhelmingly from out of state PACS and wealthy donors, pouring money into what is a rather small state in order to "buy" this election for the Republican Party. In my opinion.
using lies to influence people's votes is pretty sickening, and trumps using guilt. Also far worse is preventing people from voting who are poor.
Voting history is all public. I deal with it every day as a part of work. Depending on your state you can either call the county election people or the secretary of state directly and just buy it. Prices vary by county and state but for a quick example I bought Travis County's entire election history back until the 90s for 60 or so dollars. They just mail you a cd or you can pick it up.
Every campaign does this. That's how micro-targeting of voters works. As I write this I'm doing this for work (not in Wisconsin of course)
really guys? I know it's legal, and technically public, but sending it to your neighbors? A little personal. Campaigns may use it, but never before as a public shaming. Lets call this **** out even if it's done by the good guys and even if there are worse things out there.
According to the Wisconsin voting board this has never been done before. So...standard operating procedure? Um... Yes, campaigns usually get these and use them to figure out who to target with walkups, calls, etc., but this is far different. This is telling your neighbors whether or not you voted in an effort to either guilt you into voting or to put you in the crosshairs of your neighbors in order to get them to pressure you. I didn't say it's illegal, but it is incredibly uncomfortable.
I've never been associated with a campaign that crazy but those Wisconsin GOTV people are nuts. They have so much money and so little time they'll do anything to drive turnout.
