Signability again? Interesting. I'm afraid Luhnow is overestimating what he can get done. I'm not optimistic.
He might be working out some below-slot deals for at least the next 3-4 rounds. And he might have to, in order to land Ruiz.
Mayo and Callis think he's a 4th-outfielder type. A better version of J.B. Shuck. Better defender than hitter, but his bat is OK. Aplin's a junior. #353 according to Baseball America #283 via John Sickels
If the Astros picked him at #159, do you think they picked him to sign below slot, to have extra money for the other picks?
Sorry if already posted, just found this interesting. Any chance he goes indy ball or stays at college another year?
His dad says no comment on whether he'll go back to school. And... wow. <blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p>If my source is accurate that Appel turned down $6 mm from Astros, <a href="https://twitter.com/search/%2523Stanford">#Stanford</a> RHP is a huge egg in <a href="https://twitter.com/search/%2523Pirates">#Pirates</a> basket. Bucs draft pool: $6.6 mm.</p>— Tom Krasovic (@tomkrasovic) <a href="https://twitter.com/tomkrasovic/status/210067844740825088" data-datetime="2012-06-05T17:57:31+00:00">June 5, 2012</a></blockquote> <script src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
Even if he did, Pirates own rights for 3 years? So he goes back for his senior year, plays independent leagues for 2 years and reenters the draft? How much demand would there be for a 24 year old pitcher?
Huge mistake on his part if true. Unless he goes #1/2 next year, he won't get $6M, and I doubt he will, since college seniors have very little leverage.
Round 6, Pick 189: Brett Phillips, CF, Seminole HS, Seminole, Florida Big arm. Very good speed. Committed to NC State
If Jim Crane is willing to pay a 75% tax, we can add an extra $558,885 to our draft pool without sacrificing a pick.
same pick +1 (9th next year). maybe Boras failing his client there will make it easier for us to reach an agreement with mccullers.
