Hmm...things looking rough with the Wii U from a 3rd party standpoint. Guess not a huge surprise, but not good for Nintendo. Of course, they could still carry the Wii U with 1st party games, but this makes thing more difficult.
A Nintendo system with third party support issues...never heard of that before. I haven't watched any of their conference to see what new is being done with the tablets and what not. If it's anything like what they were showing last year...snorefest.
Wii U Tablet seems to last 3-5 hours, and takes 2.5 hours to charge. You can play as you charge of course. Spoiler Why would you want to play the Wii U for more than 3 hours anyway? Also seems like they will allow for 2 tablets at once, although it will cause slowdown.
I just wanted to add on I'm pretty sure Microsoft and Sony knew Nintendo wasn't coming with anything. That's why neither of them had a decent showing at E3 last year. This year was definitely better, but I don't think Microsoft or Sony feel any need to rush out the door with their new console (or information on them for that matter) because of how weak the Wii U is.
So, plenty of game will be designed with the Wii-mote instead? I assumed we'd be talking 4 tablet controllers at once, instead it is slow with just 2?
This year was pretty bad. I know I hated E3 last year, but I'm not sure which one was worse. I'll need to rewatch part of the 2011 conferences. There was tons of stuff I liked about E3 2011 (BF3, Skyrim, Dark Souls, Uncharted 3, positive Vita news, etc.), but not sure if it was actually in the conferences. Kind of like how I'll probably like Watch Dogs, AC3, Dishonored, etc., but the conferences themselves...not so much Funnily enough, they seem to show good stuff after the conferences. I think they are all just incompetent. Yeah, that's it. All of them. That's the only explanation for all of this.
I somewhat misunderstood the info. I think they're talking about the video stream that the WiiU sends to the tablet. It is normally 60 FPS, but since it would have to send to two tablets, it would cut that in half to 30 FPS (so "slowdown"). Don't think anything more than that would work well (definitely not 4). For some reason, I thought they were saying the game itself would slowdown, which confused me since not all games would be smooth to begin with (I was assuming Nintendo wouldn't have some "60 FPS" requirement for games, but that would be pretty nice).
Square did announce some FF 25th anniversary version of...FF1 I think? Though don't think that was for E3. Don't think they're even there? I'm really only interested in Final Fantasy Versus XIII, and only so I can laugh for 5 minutes. But I'll probably have to wait another 2-3 years for that. I'm more interested in the Eidos part of the company...strangely enough.
I think you're right and they usually save the good stuff for after the conferences. Unless of course they're first party games (those get shown usually). I just didn't feel like MS or Sony announced anything of worth last year. Smart glass looks quite cool, all of the media additions to XBL, Halo4 (I was very impressed with what I saw...and I was quite skeptical), XBLA Summer of arcade (lots of cool games there), and some of the Kinect stuff (Nike+). I didn't watch Sony's this year, so I can't really speak on them. It wasn't much better, but 2011 was completely forgettable.
Think I liked Sony's conference better last year (and I hated it at the time). Good Vita stuff (price announcement was noteworthy IIRC). More good games too (is that when Journey was revealed?). "Good Job Jeremy" vs "Nice....nice...nice." Didn't really care much for either MS conference I think. 2011 might have been more embarrassing (lots of bad Kinect stuff), while 2012 just had boring stuff I didn't care about. edit: Actually...I think Journey might have been one of those games Sony DIDN'T show at the conference. Again, showing how stupid these people are. "Hey should we show this awesome indie game called Journey, or should we get Kobe to come on stage for an awkward sequence involving NBA 2k12?"
If the Wii U is 200-250 again I've got no problem picking one up for the first party stuff, whatever weird stuff pops up along the way, and the different experience. Even if it just has a couple Mario games, Pikmin 3 and a Zelda it'll be worth the price (especially since I'd just trade in a Wii and some old games and get 100 bucks off it anyway). MS and Sony tend to be more mirrors of each other, so that's going a harder decision next gen and one that has to be watched a little more closely.
This is so awesome: http://www.cnn.com/2012/06/05/tech/gaming-gadgets/wii-u-demo-e3/ That's right. CNN thinks the Wii U is just a controller for the Wii. Again, not sure how we could get these guys to explain things like the EE and GS when they can't even understand the Wii U.
Forbes summing up the E3 conferences (at least for the big 3): http://www.forbes.com/sites/insertc...rosoft-and-nintendo-tie-for-last-place-at-e3/ More at the link. Several others are writing/saying the same it seems. No one happy with the conferences.
Sounds about right. Honestly, PC Gaming and (though I know it's not at the same level) mobile gaming are more interesting to me at the moment. Steam keeps a good catalogue of stuff going at often really good prices. I can often even get the big name stuff much cheaper. And then the huge indie scene is throwing out all sorts of new experiences. Mobile gaming is like the old days, indies are also big, it's the wild west where all sorts of stuff is tried out. (I know Android isn't on iOS' level in terms of games, but it still gets a decent showing). In the span of a couple of weeks you can get good games in a variety of areas - everything from point and click adventure to strategy RPGs; tower defense, dungeoncrawlers, racing, platformers, etc. etc. and probably pick them all up for under 20 bucks total. Not as full featured, obviously, but fun is still fun. Hell, I'm having fun trying to infect the world in Plague, Inc. right now then spending much time with my consoles. The big 3 don't do much to get hype building when they spend the majority of their time with Wonderbook that barely works or Usher singing to yet another dancing game for whatever reason.
PC gaming is great right now. I've just sampled some mobile games, but they're surprisingly good (and like you said, much cheaper). Not to change subjects, but more new stuff (stuff I really like...maybe others do too). Crappy cam footage containing ~25i minutes of Beyond: <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/UHYUL_gA7pw" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Quality sucks...but looks so good (at least the part I allowed myself to watch). Well...looks good assuming you like how Heavy Rain played. Besides one new interesting concept, looks/plays a lot like Heavy Rain. Screens (and soon video?) for Square-Enix's next-gen engine: http://www.famitsu.com/news/201206/06015843.html (copy and paste the link, Famitsu's website is fun!) Oh, here's the video: <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/UVX0OUO9ptU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> This engine was built with productivity in mind. So maybe it won't take 6+ years to make a game. edit: Here's a survey SE has: https://form.square-enix.com/a.p/933/ Basically asks if you like the demo, the universe/characters shown, etc. Can also give feedback in a comment (so you can add "FF7 remake please" or "Where's Versus XIII" or "That was a nice HD town.").
This video shows footage of the NBA 2k12 presentation demo and highlights the falws in this game. Watched the whole thing and honestly there's no chance I'm buying 2k13. Looks exactly like 2k1 and absolutely no improvements. Perkins same speed as Westbrook on transition, defenders warping and being pushed by ghosts....trash. Hope EA comes out with a f....in banger with Live 13.
