With the new mid July signing deadline, the 2012 draftees should see playing time this summer. HS arms like McCullers will have to perform in order to maintain their top 100 rating.
I really, really like that new rule about the signing date. It'd be nice to see some of our prospects playing this summer.
Just need to trade Lee, Wandy, etc. And finish tanking for another top pick. next season there is basically no big salaries on the books. With the aforementioned guys, guys we receive in trades, another high pick and some big FA signings it will be an exciting time to be an Astros fan! someone let Les know that this is how it's done.
If we could pull this off... Along with prospects in trades for wandy, myers, and lyon... the future would be very very bright!!!!
FYI: If the Astros can get Correa to sign for only slightly above the #2 bonus slot, they can afford to offer McCullers around the slot bonus for the #15 pick (which is about what he was looking for).
What a great first day. Lunhow and Co. are shooting for the moon and gone are the days where our first round pick has the ceiling of being an average to slightly above average everyday player i.e. Jio Mier, Max Sapp, etc.
Of course the picks might not pan out, but I haven't felt this excited about a Houston draft pick's potential since Yao. Truly a star prospect. For the first to,e in a long time (or so it seems), a Houston team drafted someone I wanted. I am excited.
McCullers is a top arm ... but I'm really worried about signing him .. it all depends on how much Correa gets i guess... As for the rest of the Draft, Hunter Virant is still on the board and if we take him at 61 he could also profile as a top of the rotation pitcher in a few years.
Yeah, since the Astros picked McCullers they need to focus on players that will sign in or below slot now.

Yiu could knock of rahier and fontana (atleast in theory)... i like the possibility of adding a LHP like virant... i wouldnt mind seeing a reach to free up some more bonus money to throw mccullers way...
