I think because EA has had a stranglehold on the NFL rights for so many years many other publishers may not even know how to make an NFL game. Yes, the Madden games suck but what EA has done is genius. By next year, they'll probably negotiate a cheaper deal and still have the rights to the NFL for many years to come. I'd be interested to see if 2K can break the exclusive rights that EA has had.
I purchased Madden 12 and played it for a full 15 minutes and never picked it up again. I don't have time to memorize all these plays and button combinations.
That was pre-Alpha gameplay. Tomorrow, EA will annouce Madden will have sometype of Real-time physics....supposedly.
Have you played other NFL games? Most of them have an extensive collection of plays to be realistic and people would complain if you only had a few plays to choose from) and the combination of buttons is only for advanced strategies (audibles, changing routes for WRs, etc), for the basic (run, pass, tackle) you dont need a lot of buttons.
ESPN 2k5 was the best football game EVER... Madden hasn't been the same since the XBOX platform... 09 came close
Madden is Madden. You might cry, complain, biatch, and moan. But you'll buy it, play it, and LOVE it. At least I do anyway.

Garbage EA, not sure if I'm even going to try this game out by renting. EA should quit making Football and Basketball games. Hand it over to 2k.
Their baseball games suck too, and they really went downhill on need for speed. I guess they'll just have to make NHL games.
Best baseball game to me is on PS3. MLB the Show is just amazing. MLB 2k isn't terrible, but I'd rather play the show. FIFA is solid and fight night is also and yeah maybe NHL that's about it.
Never realized it was so hip to hate on Madden. Go back and play Madden '99 on N64 and get a little perspective. Though I'll admit that I wouldn't mind if EA took over MLB and 2k did NFL for a while. MVP Baseball '06 (I think it was '06) was the best baseball game I've ever played.
i don't know about MLB the Show 2012 or 2013, but 2011 is the best baseball game i have ever played. i still play it to this day.
Hip? Madden has been the poster-child for fan scorn for a solid 5-6 years now. They got the exclusive rights contract in 2003, IIRC, and the last real significant upgrade they made was in 2004. Although that game was broken because of uber-Vick, the changes made to the gameplay and franchise modes were groundbreaking. Since then, it's been a pretty steady downhill slide for the series. I played the absolute balls off of NFL2K, and would love to see that series make a comeback.
Every year, I say this is the year I'm not going to buy it and I'm just going to make a franchise on last years game and draft all the players the real teams drafted and update all the rosters myself....then I lose interest and just buy the new game. Madden is one of only 3 video game I play. The others being NCAA and GTA.
What were the issues with APF 2K8 again? I never did check it out. Seem to recall it being criticized a bit, but thought it was mostly due to poor graphics and maybe just other things that weren't well polished. I assumed if that did well, they might have continued with that.

Exclusive rights started in 2005. 2k can blame themselves with the $20 sell price stunt for 2k5. The NFL was NOT happy......and they approached EA with an exclusive right contract (actually all companies had the chance to bid, EA out bid everyone). NFL wanted more control over their licensed games, including price (more money).
Couldn't they have just renegotiated the licensing deal (e.g., $5 per unit sold or 10% of game price, whichever is greater). Seems odd they'd get less revenue if the game sold at a lower price (2K would get less revenue, but I'd think they'd have to pay the NFL the same, no matter what they priced the game at). Then again, maybe there are weird contracts like that. Don't doubt they'd want more control and all that stuff though.
how is this considered "gameplay." The first video of this thread shows us what we are Truly getting in Madden 13.
