Megabus offering Houston express service, $1 fares

Megabus offering Houston express service, $1 fares By Regional News Bureau Houston Community Newspapers

Express transit company Megabus will begin offering service between Houston and Galveston, Austin, San Antonio and Dallas with some fares as low as $1, beginning June 19.

The carrier, which only sells tickets online, will make its Houston stops at the corner of Travis and Polk streets. It also offers out-of-state fares to Memphis, Tenn., Little Rock, Ark. and Norman, Okla.

“As Americans continue to look for ways to stretch their income, we look forward to providing safe, convenient and affordable travel to the millions of residents in the South,” said company President Dale Moser.

Fares wills always start as low as $1 and get higher as the traveling date gets closer, but during the first week of sales all tickets will be no more than $1, and 10,000 seats will be given away throughout the South. The top price for regular fares after that is about $50 one way, a company spokesman said.

Since launching in April 2006, Megabus has served more than 15 million passengers throughout more than 70 major cities in the Midwest and Northeast portions of the United States and Canada.

Advance fares may be booked today. For further information, visit www.megabus.com.

I heard about this yesterday. I find this interesting. Though I kind of enjoy driving, I almost want to try this just to give it a test run.

Don't get me wrong, I like the idea of a $1 trip to any of those cities. The issue I have is if it's only $1, I'm not so sure I want to be trapped on a bus with the other passengers. Riding Metro anywhere is a grab bag of wtf these days (haven't had to ride one in quite some time, thankfully).

You'll be sitting for 5 hours next to Walmart central, with their belly fat oozing over your arm.

I used to use Megabus all the time from Boston to NYC...it was great, I'd usually have a row all to myself along with wifi...very comfortable and easy.

It definitely makes it easier to do some weekend trips. If you are with a friend, then you dont even need to worry about having a random sit next to you.

I've heard nothing but positive stuff from friends that have used it. If I was single, I'd be taking advantage of it regularly.

There were quite a few free fares when I looked at it a few days ago. I think for the first $5000 tickets. Then again 1 dollar, free, what difference is it.

Aside from the obvious, what are some cons with this bus service? I'm very curious to try it out to Austin some time soon. I'd much rather pay $2.00 for round trip to save gas money.

When I used Megabus on the east coast...zero cons. Actually, the only thing I could think of was that we did a slight detour from Boston to NYC with a stop in Conn. So, it took like 45 min longer than driving direct. However, I was comfortable and I had my internet. Definitely worth it.

How can they afford to run it so cheap? I assume you can get about 100 people on the bus. $100 to go from Houston to SA? Does that even cover gas?
