John (Houston) Regardless of who picks him, how long until Appel reaches the majors? Klaw (4:32 PM) Inside of 24 months. Brett (Bismarck, ND) You're the GM of the Astros for a minute... Giolito with the number 1 pick? Klaw (4:32 PM) I've hedged on that only because I have secondhand info on the medicals. If our doctor cleared him, then yes. Otherwise, Buxton.

Both Price and Strasberg were considered THE number one talent in their drafts. Both consensus number one's. Appel is not that.
I was at the LSU regional this weekend. I saw Gausman pitch and I think he's pretty damn good. I'll tell you the player I want the Astros to get their mitts around, Austin Nola SS for LSU. The guy is big time leader with everything you want defensively and an improved bat. They can probably get him 7th round or later, but I see him as a plus MLB SS in 2 years.
Word. Cole was not the consensus #1, but was being talked about as a challenger to Rendon. Anyway....here's to hoping they get it right!*takes shot*
I'll choose door #2 Bob errr Drew. What's behind door #2? Mark Appel! ... Mark Appel could be yours if the price is right!

How can they be certain he takes "their deal" before they draft him? Astros: "Do you promise to sign for X dollars?" Boras: "Uh, yeah sure" Pass.
Well, looks like it's up to Boras to derail the Appel Express in the next 20 minutes. An offer in the "high 6s" is still higher than anything he'd get at 2, Scotty boy. Tell your client to take it, sign and report ASAP. Otherwise, anyone have the area code for Baxley?
A lot of you guys are falling in love with potential seriously....Buxton, who didn't hit for power despite competing against small town Georgia high school players? remember the old saying...."potential gets coaches fired" give me Appel
Agreed... you better be pretty damn sure to take a high schooler that has faced inferior talent and has provided limited power.
His numbers are good though, and he showed power at Wrigley, during the home run Derby. Correa has more proven power and is younger. I wouldn't be upset with either. I wouldn't feel upset with Appel either, but would feel let down. Give me the highest ceiling player with the top pick. Phil Nevin or Derek Jeter?
If Lucas Giolito doesn't go in the top 10 or 15, would he be guaranteed to go to college instead? It'd be amazing if he fell to our supplemental pick, but I'm sure someone will roll the dice on him.
They've pitched around Buxton as much as possible. He still hit 14 homers as a sophomore I think it was. And even apart from that he's got major league+ speed and arm to go along with decent good bat control to hit for average (over .500 this year). He's at least a leadoff hitter, with the ability to be a possible 2 or 3 hitter down the road.
yeah, i'd take all these reports of last minute negotiations with a grain of salt. i can assure you that, even in scott boras' world, he doesn't advise clients to turn down an offer that can only be beaten if they sit out a year and are drafted #1 overall again.
Right now, he is all over the place in mocks. Callis has him at 17 to Toronto, and Kevin Goldstein thinks he'll go 12th to the Mets. Keith Law had him as high as #3 a couple of weeks ago. The injury he suffered this season may have scared quite a few teams off. I doubt he falls all the way to the supplemental round; he'd be off to UCLA if that happened.
