kripparian is a legend in diablo, but his playstyle will put anyone to sleep check this out, not me of course <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/ci1pRxzYwDs" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
I haven't played or researched monk too much, though I have heard they are one of the classes that has struggled in inferno. I would think they would gear similar to barbarians except substitute dex instead of strength. But I am not familiar enough with monk passive abilities to say for sure. A one hander with high life on hit and a shield with good block seems to be most popular with inferno monks, to help with survival. Along with melee damage reduction items such as the legendary belt, String of Ears.
I just got to inferno, so my gear is severely lacking, but I've had moderate success so far. Obviously some elite packs are simply impossible for me, but I can kill about 75% of them and am progressing through Act 1 (now at the Skeleton King). I'm using a lot of "oh s**t" buttons: Serenity, Seven-Sided Strike, and Blinding Flash. Because of that, I have some other things to boost my DPS: Mantra of Conviction (Overawe) and Breath of Heaven (Blazing Wrath). My main attack, however, of Way of the Hundred Fists with the Windforce Flurry. This actually allows you to kite elites that aren't super fast since you now have a ranged attack of sorts. When they get close, you can use an "oh s**t" button. You'll still need to get in occasional punches to keep your spirit up, though, unless you stack some regen. Using Mantra of Conviction for the extra 24% damage over 3 seconds is a good spirit dump if you need to, as well. That, plus Blazing Wrath plus the damage buff from Blinding Flash can give you some serious burst if you just want to grind one of the minions down or something. It's not perfect, but it's sort of a damage/tank hybrid build. I do use two weapons, not a shield, and have about 144 resistence in everything (One with Everything passive) and about 52% mitigation from armor (that other passive that gives armor per dexterity point). I still get dropped quickly even with 33k health, but I can take a few hits without dying usually.
Have you tried out going 1 hand and shield to see if it helps with your survival? Unless you have two really exceptional 1 handers, it problaby won't reduce your dps that much.
Not really. Perhaps I will. Does a shield really add that much survivability in inferno? (my two weapons are simple magic swords that are ~550 DPS each with 100 vit/dex each)
I know it does on the barbarian, and most of the inferno level monks on the teamliquid.net forums seem to favor them, and could probably answer any questions you have better than me on monks. Look for high block value on the shield. Of course there are all different levels of shields out there with variable stats, but you can probably find one with comparable or better stats to what your offhand weapon has, plus perhaps some + all resist or other desireable stats. Stormshield is the best legendary shields for melee classes, but extremely expensive. Any item that can give + melee damage reduction is nice.
Yeah, I think most do now that I've done a little digging. This post on reddit (well, some of his responses in the AMA at least) has been extremely helpful in my future planning. Namely this: I was still prioritizing offensive stats! Hah! Definitely better defensive gear I was dismissing because it lowered my DPS. I think I've shattered a few good items. I think I'm going to be stuck farming early Act 1 for a while until I can make some significant money and get my Jeweler completely upgraded. I found some pimpin' rare shield plans for my Blacksmith, too.
Crafting seriously sucks right now, why pay almost 100k + mats to craft something, when I can pick up a very good item for the same price? They overplayed their hand at funneling gold back into the game

Well I got hacked. Don't know what happened. I only play with friends and no messing around with public games/general chat. Was on last night and woke up this morning to find all my gold was gone and the legendary items from my stash gone. Submitted a ticket to Blizzard for a rollback. However I just started a Hardcore character with friends and would be hugely disappointed if it gets rollbacked.
I'd suggest an authenticator. If you have a smartphone you can just download an authenticator app for free.
I need someone to explain something to me. I was playing with a level 60 wizard last night in hell mode. While playing with him, demons were almost impossible to kill and were dropping 400-600 pieces of gold at a time. As soon as he left the game, the gold went back to the normal 50-200 range. What the hell happened. I picked up like 100K gold in about 45 minutes of playing. I also died like 20 times.
Gold is so important in this game. With the right equipment, things are so much easier, everything cost money, there is not enough GOLD!
Yep lesson learned, just got it on my phone. Never been hacked before so didn't think I needed one, guess I was wrong
From what I have read, they are good about doing the roll backs and restoring things, but it may be a day or two before you were hacked that has the last account backup that they determine was not compromised, and anything you do between now and the time they restore your account will be lost. Quite a few people have had their accounts compromised though. Big discussion of the topic here
