Unless Soler signs with one of the other MLB teams.

So Jim Bowden tweets that we are gonna take Mark Appel and we revolt against him and his "sources". Im guessing if his "sources" said we were gonna take Buxton or Correa, we all would've said that is awesome. He is a insider and must have the best sources, and he is a professional and would never tweet made up BS.

I actually did not catch any Bama baseball games this year(Financial derivatives took up most of my free time). I just moved back to Houston so sorry I have no info.

Yeah, you must have missed Jim Callis' tweet saying that the Astros haven't quite made up their minds yet. Maybe Jim Bowden's sources (which must be pretty good) sort of missed the mark?

You just proved the point of my post. U believe Callis and not Bowden. Nobody knows who is right and who is wrong. Thats the point.

Have seen Appel pitch quite a few times. Not sure why everyone is convinced he is a future #2 starter. He has as good, or better raw stuff than half the #1's in MLB. He has the make up and repertoire you want out of a starting pitchers.

Nobody is doubting his stuff. It's the results. He's not dominating hitters as much as his stuff indicates that he should. Trevor Bauer put up a 1.25 ERA with 13 strikeouts/9ip whereas Appel has a 2.37 ERA with about 9strikeout/9ip in the same conference.

Gerrit Cole actually put up worse numbers, but he was less polished than Appel, thus has greater upside and his stuff was a tick better. There's not much projection left with Appel, what you see is what you get.

wrong........Appel didn't become a starter until his sophomore year in college and has room to add weight.............he still has a ton of upside

Actually, many scouts believe Appel will gain another tick on his fastball, in addition to more consistency. And his statistical performance has been firmly better than Gerrit Cole's was.

I would be OK with an Appel pick.

Gotta take the hometown born Mark A. from Stanford. Pitching 3 years at the college level gives him the edge over Buxton. The 5 tool player looks like a stud as well but has more of a chance to bust out as hes only in high school.

Starts at 6 PM with the 1st and the supplemental 1st rounds. Unfortunately, it's only on the MLB Network. It will also stream live on MLB.com.

Rounds 2-15 are tomorrow at 11 AM, and 16-40 will be on Wednesday at 11 AM. Both the 2nd and 3rd days are on MLB.com.

And I think you hit the nail with this.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p>Astros CEO Postolos re bonus pools: I would expect teams to stay within the limit, because forfeiting a draft pick is a very severe penalty.</p>&mdash; Eric Fisher (@EricFisherSBJ) <a href="https://twitter.com/EricFisherSBJ/status/209647223963791362" data-datetime="2012-06-04T14:06:07+00:00">June 4, 2012</a></blockquote>

    Phil Nevin or Derek Jeter?

I do like that Appel is from here and seems like a good character guy but this team isn't contending for awhile so you don't need the "fast track" guy. Besides there's no guarantee that Appel will be anything special even despite his success in college. It's a risk either way.

Astros could be contending next year for all we know. Certainly in 3 years when you would expect a collegiate pitcher to be 100% ready, while you couldn't say the same about a HS player.

I want Appel because I want a potential ace. I've got potential in the OF already. We are deep in pitching, but mostly bullpen and back of the rotation types.

I think everyone wants an ace. The main concern with Appel is that may not have a ceiling that high.
