Depends how good looking you are. If you are unattractive then you should add a button and do that too. If you are really good looking, 3 or 4 is not only acceptable, but encouraged.

It depends on the shirt and the guy (looks, build, etc.)

For me, one button for most of my shirts.

    you need to de-average this.
    1. Work and social settings
    2. What type of work setting you're in (e.g., legal vs. internet startup is very different)
    3. Cultural considerations depending on what part of the world you're living in

In most professional work settings in the US, unbuttoning two buttons of a dress shirt is completely unacceptable and ridiculous looking. But socially, it's fine.

Buttoning polo shirts all the way up is common in some demographic circles (e.g., African American), but looks ridiculous on other people. Kinda like the people who leave their bluetooth earpiece in at all times.

Never thought I'd say this, but I 99% agree with bigtexx...the 1% being that it's only acceptable (or flattering) to unbutton more than one button at the top if (1) you've got a shirt underneath or (2) you're hanging out near the water. Otherwise, nobody wants to look at your cleavage.

Don't be a slob. If you are in an environment where it wouldn't be weird to wear a tie, then always wear a tie. Same with a suit. Sure you might be slightly less fomfotable, but you will look like a professional that takes himself and his job seriously.

True story: I once was working as a journalist doing TV interviews in Tel Aviv at a diamond conference and my boss (a frumpy middle-aged woman) came up to me and buttoned my shirt up. To the top button.

And this is a place where not sporting your chest hair and gold chains is considered sissy.

Two buttons is fine on a dress shirt. If it's hot enough, the cut is right and you are fit enough, even three. I wouldn't be caught dead in a polo shirt.
