    Minor League sweep!!!

Jonathan Singleton is proving that unnamed Phillies official extremely right.

It wouldn't be the California League without an epic offensive outburst, wouldn't it?

Don't worry. Nick Tropeano is not hurt.

    Recap

OKC put down Wily Peralta, the Brewers' #1 prospect, for a second time as they nailed Nashville 5-3. Brett Wallace went 1-2 with an RBI single, part of a 3-run 1st. Angel Sanchez went 1-3 and had a 2-run single as the other source of offense in the 1st. Brian Bixler hit a solo homer (3) in the 2nd, and Landon Powell had an RBI groundout in the 3rd. Paul Clemens had himself a very nice outing, as he allowed a run on 5 hits (solo homer), walked 1, and struck out 5. Adalberto Flores made things interesting by allowing 2 runs in the 9th, but was able to finish out the game without ruining everything.

Corpus pounded out the hits, but runs were a little hard to come by in their game against Arkansas. However, 3 was more than enough for Brett Oberholtzer, who held the Travelers to an unearned run on 7 hits in 6 innings, walking 2 and striking out 4 in a 3-1 victory. Jonathan Singleton went 2-4 with a double and a solo home run (11) in the 2nd to put the Hooks on the board first. Austin Wates went 3-3 with a sac fly in the 3rd, and Jake Goebbert doubled, and had a sac fly in the 5th. Apparently, the Hooks left 19 men on base. Henry Villar followed with 3 strikeouts in 2 perfect innings, and Josh Zeid got the save, getting a strikeout in the 9th.

Well, that's a nice way to get the sweep. Lancaster unloaded 11 runs in the 5th on their way to a 15-4 romp in Visalia. The Jethawks added 2 more in the 6th, then pretty much showed some mercy. Interestingly enough, there was only 1 home run in this one. That home run was a 3-run shot that belonged to Erik Castro, his 9th of the season. Stephen Strasburg's former catcher finished the night 3-5 with the home run, 6 RBI, and scored 3 times. Enrique Hernandez finished a homer short of the cycle, going 3-5 with 4 RBI. Rene Garcia went 2-5 with a 2-run single, and Alex Todd, Ben Orloff, and Grant Hogue drove in 1 each. Everyone scored a run except for Ben Orloff, and everyone had a hit except for Telvin Nash, who is now at the Mendoza Line with his 0-3, 2 strikeout performance. On the bright side, he walked and scored twice.

Bobby Doran probably enjoyed the ample support his offense gave him, and he pitched rather well too. He allowed a run on 5 hits in his 6 innings of work, walking 2 and striking out 3. Brad Dydalewicz allowed 3 consolation runs for the Rawhide in the 8th.

One night after losing in excruciating fashion in the 14th inning, Lexington deemed extra innings to be unnecessary as they burned Rome 4-1. In a pitching matchup that I found pretty interesting, Nick Tropeano topped Navery Moore, despite bowing out early. No, Tropeano is not hurt. He just ran up his pitch count a little too early. In 5 1/3 innings of work, he allowed a run on 5 hits, walked 2, and struck out 9. Those walks were the first he's issued since May 11, when he walked Hagerstown's Matt Skole in the top of the 7th. I believe that Tropeano had a streak of 19 innings without issuing a walk.

John Hinson was activated from the DL and got the start at 2nd with Delino DeShields getting the day off. He went 3-4 with 2 RBI singles and stole 2nd base in the 3rd. On that play, Justin Gominsky struck out, and the Braves were trying for the K-CS double play. It didn't work, and Roberto Pena scored on the throw. Speaking of Gominsky, he went 2-4 with an RBI single in the 7th that scored Hinson. Dayan Diaz pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief, allowing a hit, walking 3, and fanning 1. Jason Chowning went 4 up, 4 down for his 10th save of the season, striking out 1 in the process. #FreeJasonChowning

Hinson came off the DL, but Luis Ordosgoitti was placed on it yesterday. His turrn comes tonight, so let's see what the Legends decide to do here.

    Game Scores

    Paul Clemens: 67
    Nick Tropeano: 61
    Bobby Doran: 59
    Brett Oberholtzer: 58

    Jonathan Singleton, 1B, Corpus Christi
    2-4, 2B, HR (11)

    Singleton's power progression:

    2009: 9 doubles, 2 home runs, 12 RBI, .440 SLG in 31 games (100 at-bats) in the GCL
    2010: 25 2B, 2 3B, 14 HR, 77 RBI, .479 SLG in 104 games (376 ABs) in Lakewood
    2011: 23 2B, 1 3B, 13 HR, 63 RBI, .441 SLG in 128 games (449 ABs) between Clearwater and Lancaster
    2012: 11 2B, 2 3B, 11 HR, 38 RBI, .583 SLG in 50 games (180 ABs) in Corpus Christi

    Friday's Starting Pitchers

    Paul Clemens, Oklahoma City
    W, 7 IP, 5 H, ER, BB, 5 K

    Brett Oberholtzer, Corpus Christi
    W, 6 IP, 7 H, R, 2 BB, 4 K

    Bobby Doran, Lancaster
    W, 6 IP, 5 H, ER, 2 BB, 3 K

    Nick Tropeano, Lexington
    W, 5.1 IP, 5 H, ER, 2 BB, 9 K

I'm seeing wins across the board, fewer hits allowed than innings pitched, 1 run allowed, and fewer than 2 walks issued. That's how you win games. It also doesn't hurt when your offense is beating the opposing pitchers into a pulp, too. Clemens may have been bothered by his back, which might have contributed to his horrid May. Looks like he's over it. Time for some serious corrections to his numbers.

As with Clemens, Oberholtzer is due for some correction to his BABIP. Is there any starter in this organization that has a BABIP below, or somewhere close to their league's average?

Well, with Jose Cisnero seemingly back on track, Doran (and to an extent, R.J. Alaniz) looks like he'll have to bide his time in Lancaster for the time being. With the way he's pitching this season, the California League should be on high alert. Doran is this year's Jake Buchanan, but it looks like he's doing Buchanan one better.

Tropeano went out and notched a season-high in strikeouts as a starter. He had 10 in his first appearance of the year, which was in relief. 9 is his high as a starting pitcher. 3 starts without issuing a walk? Very nice. Can he move up sometime this month, Mr. Luhnow?

    1.

    [IMG] [IMG]

    Erik Castro, 1B/DH, Lancaster
    3-5, 3-R HR (9), 6 RBI, 3 R

I think this is what the Astros had in mind when they drafted Mike Kvasnicka. College catcher, switching to a corner infield spot because his bat could play up there? See where I'm going with this?

    Enrique Hernandez, 2B
    3-5, 2B, 3B, 4 RBI, 2 R

Hernandez might be 20, but he doesn't have the upside of DeShields, Villar, or even Jio Mier. But what he is, is a dependable utility guy. The Astros probably like his versatility on defense. Lack of walks is somewhat concerning, but lack of strikeouts suggests that he's reasonably disciplined at the plate and doesn't take terrible hacks very often.

    Honorable Mentions

Austin Wates, CF, Corpus Christi: A perfect night at the plate never goes unmentioned.

John Hinson, 2B, Lexington: Nice first game off the DL. He's been on fire since being moved up from extended spring training.

Jason Chowning, P, Lexington: Do I really need to say it again?

Henry Villar and Josh Zeid, Corpus Christi: A great night for the Corpus Christi chapter of the Regulators.

    Goat

Well, there weren't really horrendous performances in the system, but Adalberto Flores earns my ire for making the OKC game a little closer than it should have been.

And Telvin Nash should stay off Twitter for a while. Despite walking and scoring twice, he struck out twice too. I'm not sure about this... no, I'm highly sure that he leads the Minors in strikeouts.

    Looking Ahead

OKC will welcome the Iowa Cubs to Bricktown for the weekend, Monday, and Tuesday. Aneury Rodriguez will get the start vs. TBA at 7:05.

Corpus kicks off the 2nd leg of this home-and-away homestand-roadtrip as they start off a series with Springfield at 6:08. Jake Buchanan will take the mound for the Hooks; he'll be opposed by Trevor Rosenthal.

Lancaster will return home to begin a homestand. First off, 3 with Rancho Cucamonga. Tyson Perez gets first crack at the Quakes at 7 Pacific. Opposing him for Rancho will be Brandon Martinez.

Lexington and Rome play game 3 of their series at 7:05 Eastern. Since Luis Ordosgoitti was placed on the DL, his spot is open. Whoever gets the start will be opposed by Greg Ross, I presume.

The Dominican Summer League opens play first thing in the morning, as the Mariners come to the Astros complex at 10:30 Eastern. For more information on the DSLstros, see posts #570, #572, and #576 on the previous page of this thread.

Isn't Fernando Martinez out of options? If so, he will have to stick ... here's hoping for a good run while taking the roster spot for Carlos Lee. Any word on an extended disable list stay for Lee?

    Good Luck Fernando!!

Recalled to New York June 22
Placed on 15-day DL retroactive to July 4 on July 9

Roster status changed on November 12

2010: Optioned to Buffalo on March 31
    Recalled on August 7
    Optioned on August 19
Roster status changed on October 13

2011: Optioned to Buffalo on March 11
    Recalled on May 12
    Optioned on May 27
    Recalled on June 30
    Optioned on July 3

Man, I wish God had graced me with enough talent to play baseball for a living...at least for a short while. I remember vividly taking the field in my very last game for the very last time, knowing it would be my last time playing real organized baseball. Man, that sucked. I read about these guys and think how ridiclously exciting it would be to find yourself playing well enough to be making a push for the Show. How exciting it must be for their families to follow this every day.

Don't get me wrong..ridiculously grateful for what I have...but there's got to be an alternate universe somewhere in which I'm playing 2B for the Hooks, right? :)

If I remember correctly, the reason the Mets lost Martinez was because he was out of options and they couldn't send him back to the minors. They optioned him and the Astros were able to claim him. Could be wrong - but just going off of memory.

Some injury news to pass along... it looks like John Hinson tweaked a hamstring last night in Lexington. And it was his first game since coming off the DL. Bummer.

I think he had options, but the Mets didn't have enough space on their 40-man roster for him, so had to send him through waivers.

    Saturday Stories

Brett Wallace displayed a clutch gene last night.

Actually, every team came through late except for Lexington, who dominated wire-to-wire.

    Recap

Brett Wallace only had 1 hit for OKC in their game against Iowa, but man, was it huge. His grand slam (10) in the 7th tied the game at 8, and it spurred the Redhawks on to 7-run 7th and an 11-8 victory. At one point, the Redhawks were down 5-0 in the 3rd. They only scored in 2 innings (4 in the 3nd), but they made sure those innings were bursts. Brian Bixler and Scott Moore both went 1-4 with an RBI. Mike Hessman went 2-5 with a 2-run double. Their production occurred in the 3rd and promptly erased the early deficit. After Wallace's slam, Hessman scored on a passed ball, then Brandon Barnes, who came on in a double switch, extended the lead with a 2-run single.

The I-Cubs jumped all over Aneury Rodriguez, whose stock has more or less cratered this season. He was unable to get an out in the 3rd, so in 2+ innings, he allowed 5 runs on 8 hits, walked 2, and struck out 1. Chris Hicks threw a scoreless 6th in his AAA debut, but was unable to record an out in the 7th, as he allowed 2 runs (both inherited and allowed to score by Juan Abreu) on 2 hits and struck out 2. Juan Abreu got the win despite allowing Hicks' runners to score in the 7th, allowing 1 hit, walking 1, and fanning 1. Jose Valdez got his 12th save, striking out 2 in the 9th.

Corpus used a 4-run 7th to defeat Springfield 5-4. Adam Bailey opened the scoring by launching his 1st homer as a Hook this season (9). He had 3 in 23 games with Corpus to close out the season. He also had a 2-run double in the 7th that put the Hooks on top 3-2, and an outfield assist, throwing out Travis Tartamella at home. Kody Hinze had a sac fly, and Austin Wates had an RBI single. Jake Buchanan was good in his 6 innings, as he only allowed 2 runs on 4 hits (2-run homer), did not issue a walk, and struck out 4. He induced 11 groundouts and 2 flyouts, and needed 80 pitches (56 strikes) to get through 6. So, theoretically, he would have been good for at least another inning. Arcenio Leon walked the first 2 guys he faced, but did get 2 outs in the 7th. Kevin Chapman got the final out, but not before allowing Leon's runners to score (2 unearned). Josh Zeid allowed a walk and struck out 2 in the 8th, and Jason Stoffel allowed 2 hits in the 9th, but was able to get his 7th save.

Lancaster took down Rancho Cucamonga 12-6 on the strength of a 6-run bottom of the 6th. Even Andrew Robinson got to bat in the inning... he struck out. I would assume that was the first time he got to hit since high school. Tyson Perez was ineffective in his 3 innings, as he allowed 7 runs on 10 hits (grand slam shy of the home run cycle), walked 2, and struck out 4. He was a bit homer-prone in Greeneville, but out of the 36 hits he's allowed in Lancaster this season in 35 1/3 innings, 11 have been home runs. He did not factor into the decision as the Jethawks took control of the game later on. Jose Trinidad got the win in relief as he tossed 3 scoreless, allowing 3 hits, walking 2, and striking out 2. Ben Heath went 3-4 with a 2-run homer (2), 3 RBI, and scored 3 times. Ben Orloff and Erik Castro had 2 hits and 2 RBI each. George Springer went 0-3 and is in quite a slump, but he drew 2 walks and scored a run. Rafael Valenzuela, Telvin Nash, and Jonathan Meyer each drove in 1. Also, Domingo Santana tweaked his right hamstring running out a groundball in the 3rd and had to leave. He'll be evaluated today.

No rally needed in Lexington, as they dominated Rome wire-to-wire in an 8-2 victory. Matt Duffy (2-run, 9) and Chris Epps (2) went back-to-back in the 1st. Jimmy Howick also went deep (2) in the 2nd. Duffy also added an RBI double in the 8th. Zach Johnson went 2-4 with an RBI single. Drew Muren went 2-5 with a double. With Luis Ordosgoitti heading to the DL, Richard Rodriguez was called in from extended spring training to get the start. In 3 innings, he allowed a run on 3 hits, walked 1, and fanned 4. Nathan Pettus got the win in relief, allowing a run on 3 hits, walking 1, and fanning 5 in 3 2/3 innings of work. Murilo Gouvea went 7 up, 7 down to get his first save of the season, striking out 1.

Last season, Rodriguez made 4 appearances in the Gulf Coast League and posted a 9.82 ERA. In 2010, when he was with the DSL club, he was suspended 50 games for the use of performance-enhancing drugs.

The Dominican Summer League kicked off its season yesterday morning, and the Astros fell 4-3 to the Mariners as Javier Saucedo allowed a home run to Angel Jimenez in the 6th that proved to be the winning hit. The Astros scored all 3 runs in the bottom of the 2nd. Arturo Michelena, a Venezuelan whom the Astros signed for $220K last year, started at 2nd and went 2-5 with 2 RBI from the leadoff spot. He also committed 2 errors. Luis Reynoso, the big acquisition at $700K, started at SS and went 0-4, but did not commit any errors. Cristian Murillo had an RBI single. Frederick Serrano doubled and came around to score on Murillo's single. Edwin Villarroel, a 17-year-old from Venezuela, got the start and allowed 3 runs (2 earned) on 6 hits in 5 innings, walking 1 and striking out 1. Saucedo served up the winning homer, which was the only run and hit he allowed in 2 innings of work, as he also walked and struck out 1.

    Game Scores

    Jake Buchanan: 60
    Richard Rodriguez: 52
    Edwin Villarroel: 45
    Aneury Rodriguez: 19
    Tyson Perez: 13

    Three Stars

    3.

    Matt Duffy, 3B, Lexington
    2-4, 2B, 2-R HR (9), 3 RBI, R

Matt Duffy promotion watch is on. No doubt, he's been the Astros' top 3B prospect so far this season.

    2.

    Adam Bailey, RF, Corpus Christi
    2-4, 2B, HR (1; 9 season), 3 RBI, 2 R

So... he was in Corpus to start.... and he should have been there all season, to be honest.

    1.

    Brett Wallace, 3B/1B, Oklahoma City
    1-3, GS (10), 2 BB, 2 R

There's the power we were all expecting when the Astros flipped Anthony Gose to get him. Wallace's BB:K ratio now sits at a more respectable 1:4, with 12 walks and 49 strikeouts. That grand slam was significant in that it tied the game for OKC, and they used it as a rallying point to get the victory.

By the way, and I probably shouldn't bring Gose up every time I discuss Wallace, he had a 16-game hit streak snapped last night. In the process, he raised his average from .239 to .302.

    Honorable Mentions

Arturo Michelena, 2B, DSL Astros: A very nice offensive debut. Defensively, obviously he'll get the coaching he needs in his first exposure to organized ball.

Brandon Barnes, OF, Oklahoma City: Hasn't missed a beat since his promotion.

Ben Heath, C, Lancaster: I hope one catcher in this system can catch fire and get moving...

Jake Buchanan, P, Corpus Christi: Only one mistake was made in an excellent start.

Edwin Villarroel, P, DSL Astros: 2nd-youngest player on the roster gets the first start of the season, and he did alright. I don't know what else to expect; and unless you happen to know people that are high enough in the organization, the only way to judge DSL players is to look at the box scores that usually don't update until the evening. He seemed reasonably composed.

    Goat

Javier Saucedo gave up the winning home run, so that's probably enough to be named goat. Dishonorable mentions go to Aneury Rodriguez and Tyson Perez for poor starts.

    Looking Ahead

OKC and Iowa are back at it at 6:05. Dallas Keuchel gets the start against Brooks Raley.

Corpus and Springfield play the middle game of their series at 6:08. Jarred Cosart returns to the rotation after getting skipped. He will go up against Richard Castillo.

Lancaster will also be playing the middle game of their series against Rancho Cucamonga at 2 Pacific. Jorge De Leon takes the mound for the Jethawks; opposing him will be Chris Reed, the Dodgers' 1st-round pick (16th) last season, and their #5 prospect.

Lexington concludes their series with Rome at 1:35 Eastern, with Mike Foltynewicz getting the start. His Braves counterpart will be Ernesto Silva.

The DSL Astros are heading to the Mariners' complex to play tomorrow morning. All games are at 10:30 AM Eastern, and the league conforms to a home-and-away format. Since their last game was at their home complex, they'll go to the Mariners' place to play. And so on, so forth.

And, at last! Jason Chowning is on his way up! Well, he's going to Lancaster, but at least he's finally out of Lexington.

    Standings Update

OKC, at 33-23 has taken over 1st in the PCL AL Southern Division, 2.5 ahead of Albuquerque.

Corpus Christi is now back at .500 at 27-27. They are in 3rd in the Texas League's South division, 6 behind Frisco, and 2 behind Midland for 2nd. The Hooks will be playing their next series with the Rockhounds.

Lancaster, at 29-27, is tied for 2nd in the California League's South Division with Lake Elsinore. Both teams are 1 behind High Desert. Still a very tight race, as any of the 5 teams can still win the first half. Inland Empire, in last at 26-30, is still 4 games out of 1st.

At 30-25, Lexington is still smack in the middle of the South Atlantic League Southern Division. They are 8.5 behind Asheville, who, at 39-17, share the best record in the league with Greensboro.

And obviously, the DSLstros are 0-1.

    Crash Hessman!!!

How did Jarred Cosart fare in his return to the Corpus rotation?

I don't think there's a hotter offense in the Minors than Lancaster.

Mike Foltynewicz = 1-hitter. Like a boss. Oh, and Delino DeShields had a pretty good game, too.

    Recap

Crash Hessman's 3 solo shots fueled OKC to a 6-5 win over Iowa. He finished 4-4 and scored all 3 runs by driving himself in 3 times, and now has 13 home runs on the season. The 3rd homer occurred in the 7th and proved to be the winner. Brad Snyder had an RBI single in the 1st that opened the scoring, and Angel Sanchez had an RBI groundout. Sanchez also scored on a force play in the 2nd. Dallas Keuchel got knocked around a bit, allowing 5 runs (4 earned, 1 inherited) on 6 hits in 6 2/3 innings (10 groundouts, 1 flyout), but he was still somewhat efficient, walking 1 and striking out 6. Enerio Del Rosario got the win in relief, getting the last out of the 7th and pitching the 8th. Jose Valdez got his 13th save, striking out 1.

Corpus fell back under .500 as they fell to Midland 8-3. Jarred Cosart returned to the rotation and was perfect for 3 innings, then looked a bit uneven after that. In 6 innings, he allowed 4 runs on 7 hits, walked 1, and struck out 4. Jonathan Villar went 2-5 with the only RBI, coming on a single in the 7th. Jonathan Singleton scored on a wild pitch in the 8th, and Jake Goebbert also scored on the subsequent error which cut the Cardinals' lead to 4-3. Unfortunately, the wheels fell off, as Arcenio Leon and Alex Sogard failed. Leon technically allowed all 4 runs (2 charged to Sogard) that Springfield scored in the 8th.

Lancaster is now on a 5-game winning streak as they thrashed Rancho Cucamonga 15-8. The Jethawks are scorching at the plate; they've scored 42 in their last 3. Also helped that the Quakes pitchers were just horrid. Jethawks hitters were plunked 5 times in this game. But, they scored in every inning except the 6th. Ben Heath might have heard me.... he went deep again in the 4th, and his 3-run shot (3) pretty much set the tone for how this one would unfold. He finished 2-4 with a double, the homer, 5 RBI, and scored 3 times. Rafael Valenzuela got in on the action too, as he went 3-4 with a double, 5 RBI, and scored twice. Jonathan Meyer went 2-4 with an RBI and scored twice. Ben Orloff went 1-4 with 3 RBI. Telvin Nash still keeps striking out, but at least he drew 3 walks.

Jorge De Leon pitched 5 innings, allowing 3 runs on 4 hits (solo homer), walking 3 and striking out 4. Zach Grimmett finished out the game, allowing 5 runs on 8 hits (2 2-run homers) in 4 innings, striking out 2.

What a game for Mike Foltynewicz as Lexington took 3 of 4 from Rome with a 4-1 victory. Foltynewicz went out and threw a 1-hitter in his 8 innings; his lone mistake was a home run to William Beckwith in the 4th. His complete line: 8 innings, allowed 1 run on 1 hit, walked 2, and struck out 5. He allowed 3 baserunners all game. No sign of wearing down; he was consistently at 93-95, even in the 7th.

The Legends did all of their scoring in the 1st and 2nd innings. Chan-Jong Moon had a 2-run double, Zach Johnson had an RBI groundout, and Delino DeShields went 2-4 with an RBI single and stole 4 bases. Carlos Quevedo finished it off to complete the 1-hitter.

    Game Scores

    Mike Foltynewicz: 79
    Dallas Keuchel: 49
    Jorge De Leon: 48
    Jarred Cosart: 45

    Three Stars

    Ben Heath, C, Lancaster
    2-4, 2B, HR (3), 5 RBI, 3 R

Don't you think he pulled the wool over our eyes after he ended up with a cameo in Corpus in his draft season? He wasn't great in Lancaster last year, but I didn't think he was playing so bad that it warranted a demotion.

    Rafael Valenzuela, 1B, Lancaster
    3-4, 2B, 5 RBI, 2 R

Organizational guy. But you have to appreciate the effort Raffy brings night in and night out.

Crash Hessman now has 343 home runs in his Minor League career.

One mistake took him out of consideration for a no-hitter. But otherwise, it was straight up dominance.

    Honorable Mentions

Jonathan Villar, SS, Corpus Christi: Probably the only offensive performance worth noting in a pretty bad game for Corpus.

The Lancaster offense: Scoring in 7 out of 8 innings usually = win.

Delino DeShields, 2B, Lexington: Is he the 2nd fastest man behind Billy Hamilton?

Well, Arcenio Leon and Alex Sogard helped Springfield put the game out of reach.

    Random

Brandon Meredith, Jordan Scott, and Chan-Jong Moon went out for a victory dinner. What's on the menu? Korean food.

When in doubt, Brandon, just order all the meat in the restaurant.
