Apparently P Diddy's son is a good enough football player to receive a scholarship to UCLA. He was also recruited by other major colleges. They are getting blasted for his son accepting the scholarship since P Diddy could easily afford to foot the bill. I am of the mind that the son earned the scholarship (he also carries a 3.75 GPA) and he should have no qualms accepting it, especially considering it is his accomplishment. Thoughts? (A Forbes article, but there are plenty of others) http://www.forbes.com/sites/kurtbad...s-son-deserves-his-ucla-football-scholarship/
I agree. How many rich families have spent tons of money prepping their sons for a sport including moving them around the country to attend powerhouse schools, best trainers, etc. only to have them get a scholarship when the family could really foot the bill. Combs isn't the first athlete with money in his family to get a full ride and he shouldn't be receiving any heat for accepting it. The only reason that he does is because of how famous his family happens to be.
I have no problems with it at all. The scholarship is paid for by tv revenue, jersey sales, etc...money raised by and for football. Plus, there's a status that goes along with being a scholarship athlete. What he's doing is perfectly acceptable.
How come Austin Rivers and Duke didn't get heat for his scholarship? Pretty sure Doc can afford tuition at Duke.
The kid earned it, and should be able to accept it. Just as I have not been penalized (in my adult life) by my parents' poor choices and lack of money, a kid should not be penalized for the opposite.
Don't see the problem. Not all scholarships are created to help the downtrodden. This is a merit scholarship you earn for being good at something. Do people think of scholarships as charity?
If the talent is there Combs has earned that scholarship period -- thanks H. Obama for your Socialist policies and agenda.
I was listening to sports talk radio and people are actually criticizing the fact that he's accepting the scholarship...I cant believe people can take that stance. The kid deserves the scholarship...just like Andrew Luck deserved the scholarship, despite Oliver Luck's wealth of money. Im also impressed that P Diddy raised such an intelligent kid...it could have been very easy to just throw money at the kid and let him get through life with $.
I think this is what I took the most out of this thread. I think P Diddy passed the brains on down. While I may not like his music, he certainly did capitalize on his situation (whatever it takes) to get from where he was (hype man?) to where he is today. Obviously, the guy's gotta have some sort of brains.
Yeah, Im not really a fan of his music, but Ive always respected his work ethic and attitude...he's a very smart man and Im happy to see he's an equally good father.
and here I thought scholarships were for people that CAN'T afford it. In the end the school bought the name...and somebody who really needs the scholarship will be left out.
So, you are of the opinion that the son's hard work and dedication should be ignored because his father is wealthy? Should Andrew Luck have received a scholarship? What is the net worth cutoff that should be imposed?
there are merit and achievement scholarships and this one is merit. Seems OK -- and the alumni fund will ecstatic to have the Comb's mailing address. Don't see much criticism in the editorials. Most seem to say he earned it. And I agree.
Not sure the relevance there? What about Chris Simms at UT? Or where ever Michael Jordan's son went? All sorts of rich athletes have kids that get scholarships. Where on earth did you get that idea? Merit-based scholarships have never looked at need, whether academic or athletic. They are, not surprisingly, based on merit.
Really? People are seriously getting pissed over THIS? I'm just going to leave this here because this describes America very well. Land of the free, WHOA LETS GET OFFENDED ABOUT EVERYTHING.
Would you pay for something that you could get for free? Keep it mind it could cost upwards of $40,000. I don't think rich people get rich by paying for things their children are getting for free. Free. This is America. Free.
I'm going to guess most wealthy kids go to college this happens all the time. This is just a result of kids stacking up $25,000 in student loan debt. Probably add another $10,000 in credit card debt than unable to find a job after graduating or making 30k a year after 4 years of school. So news of a kid that was born into riches getting a full ride is going to strike a nerve of the average college kid......
no problem with this, the scholarship is based on merit. I'd love to see somebody try to argue that this is wrong. Also, the scholarship is drawing out of private funds so it's not even tax based.
