MSNBC Produced Its Own Anti-Romney Video in February

Fox News is taking a drubbing for broadcasting a four-minute video attacking President Obama yesterday but the network's arch-rival, MSNBC, has thus far avoided criticism for an anti-Mitt Romney video it produced and broadcast in February.

The video latches onto the idea that, by appearance, Romney looks presidential and competent but is actually a buffoonish dunce. "Much like the perfect silent picture star whose career was thwarted by the emergence of sound in cinema, Mitt Romney has stumbled when he's had to open his mouth," reads the film's YouTube description. Some might argue that the video is shorter in length (it's a little over one-minute) and far less savage with its subject, but then we're getting into gradations, which is a factor in all political advertising. For instance, the way the segment humorously displays the build-up of political hype surrounding Romney only to show him fail, resembles the satirical "Obama is cool" ads produced by GOP operative Karl Rove.

Regardless, the outcry against Fox News has already caused the network to denounce its video, with Bill Shine, executive vice president for programming saying in a statement, "The package ... was not authorized at the senior executive level of the network." One would imagine right-wing bloggers will now call on MSNBC and NBC to similarly denounce their video but perhaps it's time to make a larger point. Does it really matter if MSNBC or Fox News produce 3-minute partisan hit pieces? What, in effect, is the difference between a slickly-produced monologue by Ed Schultz vilifying Mitt Romney and a slickly-produced video montage doing the same thing? Is it somehow more journalistically appropriate when there's less B-roll and over-voice involved? To complain about 4-minutes of partisan excess on a 24-hour network filled with partisan excess makes little sense.

I wouldn't care if these ads weren't effective, but sadly they are.

Neither the FOX add or MSNBC add should have been made or aired.

hightop: you were at one time a fake Buddhist and worse a fake Sprawl fan. Buddha would make an exception to his rule so he could hate you. Sprawl already does. Go to sleep. And don't wake up.

what I don't get is why they can't see it

I'll be the first to admit it's the same ole same ole from both sides but for them to say "not us" is freaking unbelievable.

That more than anything else got me active in politics this time. And I believe quiet America is about done with this too.

Rational people don't see it because it doesn't exist.

There's a big difference between producing a slick campaign video and commenting on a 30 sound bite from a candidate. If you can't see the difference, well, lets just say you need to work on your critical thinking skills

There is a difference, but the point is well made.

This is probably the only good thread hightop has ever started on this board. He finally got a base hit in the big leagues after 200 consecutive strike outs.

Bottom line is that the credibility of a News channel is deservedly called into question with crap like this. It's clear Fox has a right-wing agenda. And it's clear the MSNBC has a bias to the left. We can argue that Fox is much worse, but (and I struggle to say this) to Hightop's point, it's just levels of gradation.

I guess Hightop is just a GOP'er after all , like most of the so called "libertarians". Constantly attacks Obama allegedly from the left, but really gets incensed if the media attacks his boy Romney.

A not so secret Romney supporter. Maybe he likes Romney since he supports numerous regular wars and the drug war, too.

Yeah, forget levels of gradation. Playfully punching someone in the arm is the same exact thing as being punched in the face by Mike Tyson.

I wouldn't have known about either of these if it wasn't for this thread. It seems to me only the partisan hacks care what the other partisan hacks are doing to deceive the public, and in this particular case the partisan hacks on the right fell down on the job back in February and failed to criticize MSNBC when they had a chance. But, this article cleverly shifts the blame for missing an opportunity to the other team for being diligent in their partisanship.

    Why do I care again?

MSNBC, once again, doing an inferior hatchet job in a less entertaining way to an indifferent and/or absent audience.

that's because liburals don't need their hannities to tell them how to think.

seriously, i'm in another thread arguing with a winger on oil production going up under the administration of obama.

well right on cue he states that well federal lands weren't opened under obama so it doesn't count, the new winger talking point I already heard earlier this week.

This sounds to me more like a case of "my enemy's enemy must be my friend." There are quite a few ABOs (Anybody But Obama) out in the wide world of politics.

No one is disagreeing that there is some sort of slant on Faux and MSNBC.

There is a difference though, which has been proven over and over. MSNBC, while more Liberal, uses evidence/facts/rational thinking to convey an opinion. Sure, they have made errors, but I can't remember the flat out lies/misinformation that is seen on the political bedlam that is Fox.

Fox uses flat out lies, BillO's talking points used AS FACTS, misuses video footage to hype up candidates (see Romney, Mitt), and frames the majority of Obama coverage as negative. There is never a general report of what happened in DC. It's always Hannity/Bill/Hannity Clone/Blonde Girl using personal judgment to decide what the news is. Then, you have a bunch of uneducated viewers that take these opinions as fact/"news" and the vicious, dangerous cycle continues.

Let's not even begin to discuss the countless racial undertones and disparaging remarks about minorities on that channel. I guess that would explain some of the offensive posts in this forum.
