Yeah, I agree with Lane being the likely candidate. Roger seems to be on the up - he had the LSD experience, he's found things to feed off of besides hatred for Pete and he's free from Jane.
What's the old theater adage about Chekhov's pistol? If you introduce a gun in Act I of a story, you have to use it by Act V? Pete's had that rifle in his office for years now. That's gonna be used by someone before all is said and done. (I was thinking closer to the show's, not the season's, finale.)
I think Pete's the most obvious choice, he's been set up to self destruct this whole season, IMO at least....
Man that Don/Peggy stuff - just like scenes with Don and Joan - are this show at its best. Pretty moving reaction from Peggy at the end. Episode was really good; very dark and lots of stuff moving forward now. Joan
So Peggy, essentially stuck at SCDP, saw her way out and took it. Don wanted her to always be the Robin to his Batman and she wanted to rise to the top herself. Instead, as she's already made up her mind to leave, she sees a representation of the "old guard" woman in the workplace lap her and make partner. I wonder if Peggy will ever find out how Joan achieved the "success" she thinks she wants for herself. Did anybody else feel the lingering shot of Lane in the office, as the partners (including newly-minted Joan) walk into the office for the post-pitch celebration, cements him as the likely candidate for our much-speculated suicide? Pete is nowhere near bottom; his treatment of Trudy demonstrates that. Was Joan's choice tonight a foreshadowing of what Meghan will encounter in the acting world? Our brief glimpse into her audition felt like that to me.
Holy smokes, what an episode, it packed as much punch as a season finale. A part of Joanie may have died tonight, I'm interested to see how she copes with her decision in the long run. Don is disgusted by everybody there right now and on top of that he loses the one he held in highest esteem, though well deserved as he treated her badly and had to acknowledge that he took her for granted. Yep, in that career and in that time those type of offers could be made on countless occasions, even today it must be more common than I'd like to guess, but I don't see Megan following the same path because she has more means to afford her self-respect, she did have an upset face when she got back home and she is definitely desperate but she has demonstrated to have more character than people give her credit for.
Don lost his two healthiest and most authentic relationships. People who empathized with his working class roots, paralleled and functionally accommodated his professional discipline, and never projected themselves as entitled or ambitious enough to be threats.
Completely agree. I would like to add that Joan saw an opportunity and took advantage of it just like don did when he had the chance to become "Donald Draper." It seemed to me that when don saw joan in the room and realized that she is now a partner he probably was sympathetic and could relate to the tough decision she made.
Great episode. What a feeling Peggy must of had leaving the firm. Did anyone sensed that Peggy really wanted to lay the bomb down on Don after he told Peggy that Joan got promoted to partner? Most ppl would of yelled at the top of their lungs and stormed out but Peggy handled herself with class. On a side note, this could be the last that we see Peggy. As the saying goes, "If you're not close with Don Draper, you're not going to last on the show." However, me thinks we'll see Peggy again in a future episode if not this season. She's gonna haunt SCDP stealing their future clients.
Peggy will around, I wonder if she was hired simply because they wanted to stick it to SCDP. Anyone else think Peggy's leaving was kind of abrupt? I know they've been building on it but it still seemed a little too fast. Oh well, it worked.
Finally caught up, watched all 5 seasons through this wknd, and avoided this thread until then! I love this show
There is no way a personality like Peggy could leave if it wasn't abrupt. Don has always had a mental hold on her for the longest time. I think Don might try and sleep with Peggy to regain control of her.
Her leaving abruptly was no biggie, I'm talking about the build-up to what ultimately made her want to leave. I felt it was a little weak, but maybe I just didn't pick up on all of the cues as the season has gone by.
