I'll let someone else have Perry Jones. He's soft, and was Baylor's third best player as a sophomore. Workout warriors do nothing for me.
Signs of a weaker than expected draft...PJIII stock is rising. Most likely take him at 14 if available, but he'll be drafted too high and then called a "bust". He'll be an okay player in the NBA. He will be a "bust" because most likely doesn't become the star that some team thinks he'll become. He's a high risk, high reward guy that will be taken at a spot of medium risk, high reward. If he puts it together, some team will be incredibly lucky.
"High reward"? What does PJ III do really well that makes you think he has a huge upside? What does he need to put together to make a team lucky? The question is open to anyone.
People see the length, athleticism, and his mid range shooting touch and think if they can get him to pick his motor up, he could be a matchup nightmare at his height. The problem is PJIII regressed as a sophomore. He really cost himself money by not coming out as a freshman. Overall, He reminds me of a poor man's Rudy Gay when Gay came out of UConn. That's not a good thing either. Gay's effort and work ethic were questioned too, but at least he was the man on his college teams. Quincy Acy and Pierre Jackson were Baylor's two best players last year.
PJIII has athleticism. PJIII is an excellent ball handler for his size, but doesn't utilize this to his advantage. He needs to add strength and use it to finish and draw contact around basket. He is already a decently efficient guy while playing incredibly inefficiently. Someone needs to tell him to stop shooting threes until he learns to shoot them. BTW, they also need to tell him to not waste his time learning to shoot threes as he needs to hit weight room and needs to work on his mid range game. He needs a lot of teaching and needs time in the D League to be a PF. Maybe needs a shock collar that activates if he hovers around three point line. Changing his style of play will be very difficult to do which is why I think he'll end up a rotation or 5th starter type of player. He is in the opposite boat as Morris. Not a fan of PJIII, but to not see that there is some potential there that will likely not be harnessed is just as strange to me as those thinking he should be drafted high.
My biggest concern is that he doesn't have the handles to be a legit 3. In this sense he seems to be similar to Morris. As a 4 there's no way he's worth even the 14th pick, much less a top-10 pick. And I'd certainly take both Patterson and Motiejunas over PJ3 at the PF spot. That said, the Rockets took a chance on Morris think he can be a power-3. So PJ3 is not out of the realm of possibility. But I don't see them trading up for him after Parsons great rookie year.
PJ III's handles are fair to middling. Nothing special IMO. His mid-range shooting isn't very good and his 3-point shooting is close to nil. He isn't strong and hates physical play. His mentality on the floor is very poor because he isn't aggressive to start with and quickly goes into a shell when facing adversity. All he seems to have is "athleticism", which I think translates (in his case) to mean tall, skinny, tries to dribble and tries to shoot. IMO, he has little chance to play PF in the NBA anytime soon and doesn't bring enough skills to the table at SF to be successful. I don't expect much out of the guy. He'll be something along the lines of Donte Green.
Good points, but we are not likely to get anything more than a project player(s) with our picks. I would try to package them, and get a good player who is tough and fairly skilled, and pass up on PJ. I agree that a tweener would be useless.
Again I'll say, I'm not impressed with his on-court performance. Taking a chance on a "workout warrior" is a risky shot in the dark. Sometimes he's dominant....other times, you wonder if he's even out there.
Kinda cherry-picking info there. PJones, well, did he play out of position at Baylor? Or does he just disappear in games? Another GM in the same article said: Two NBA general managers are torn on whether to select Perry Jones III in the upcoming draft. "That sort of talent doesn't come along very often," one GM said after watching Jones showcase his versatility in a workout this week. "As I was watching the workout, I thought you finally got to see what a freed-up Perry Jones could do if a coach just lets him be himself. He could be a dominant, and I mean dominant, forward with his size, athletic ability and skill set. I think he's a hard worker and will be a much better contributor if you give him the chance to be himself. I'd have no concerns drafting him in the top five. He could be a home run of a pick."
He didn't have a pure PG to play with while at Baylor. I think Jones is a player that Morey will target.
Same here. Morey tends to favor production over potential, but he has shown he is willing to take chances on potential for a low cost. Not in draft, but he did acquire TWill a player who was all potential as well as a couple other rejects from his draft class.
Not playing with a "pure" PG is why PJ III was soft at Baylor? Nonsense. When Quincy Miller wanted the ball, he would back his guy down and call for the ball. PJ III would only do that when he had a clear physical mismatch. And if you haven't seen the NBA lately, PJ III may never play with a "pure" PG.
I have been saying it all along I really think morey is targeting pjIII and Drummond I know there not the safe picks but at some point You have to go for the guy whos ceiling is of a Lebron James Kobe Bryant Dwight Howard. I dont think it helps the team at all to pick a player who is rotation worthy by yr 1. The rockets have good players right now who can't get playing time as is, we don't need anymore. With that said obviously I think Davis trob and mkg are as safe of picks for Allstar players u can get and of course our gm would love those guys but assuming we don't land a top 3 pick we need guys like pjIII more than a safe pick like harrison barnes who u know could be a very good scorer in the league but at this point doesn't look to have the potential like a pjIII. Just my opinion but I really do think moreys gonna ditch the safe pick rout and surprise us one and for all.
Unless he works out a drastic trade that lands us a top 9 pick we won't be able to draft PJ III. If we keep the current picks we have to choose the biggest sleepers in the mid-late 1st round, which are guys like Wroten, Ross, Melo, White, Doron Lamb, Draymond Green.
