Morey seems to go for players that drop rather than those players that rise. So we should be keeping an eye out for players have scouts shaking their heads.
Expected it. Guys like PJ III, Lamb, Drummond, Melo, Wroten, White, Taylor, Miller are made for the Combine and their stocks will rise.
http://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap/221235/NBA_Talent_Evaluators_Torn_On_Perry_Jones_III Jones, a 6-foot-11, 235 pound forward, has drawn comparison to Lamar Odom. "Of all the guys that are in your top 10, I'd have the hardest time taking him," another GM said. "I know he wants to be a 3, but I don't think he does anything that we ask our 3s to do that is special. He's not a great shooter. He doesn't have a great handle. He's not an aggressive defender. He's got great size and athleticism, but he's not skilled enough. That means he'll end up being a stretch 4, which is a euphemism for a guy who doesn't have a position. "Could he be great? Sure. But I think he's a major project and a major risk. There are safer picks in the top 10 with very good upsides. I think there's a good chance that he slides in the draft as people continue to wrestle with who he is." His draft value will drop if people want to choose other safer picks. Ability but lack of production commensurate with skill level....your stock always goes up around the draft. People start to forget about your college play and start focusing back on your workouts and measurables. Happens every year.
PJ III is definitely a tweener, not really small forward and not really power forward. Unlike say Marcus Morris, Jones III has the ability to play either position. His talent is more translatable to the NBA. Good size, quickness, good handles, otherworldly athleticism, and explosiveness.
I would avoid low-motor players like PJ III. He's soft as a baby's behind against real competition and doesn't do anything really well.
After viewing this, I have to give him credit for avoiding false bravado and admitting he needed to improve his mental toughness. But I can't believe he's done that since Baylor's season ended.
I agree. Pass on PJII. If he's there at #14 and somebody is interested in trading up for him, trade down.
He's probably not a good fit at this point for Houston. If the Rockets had a player, like Yao Ming or Dwight Howard in the middle. It probably would work out, very well. But, they don't.' You can afford to have tweener forward or even undersized power forward, when you are good at center. Again, Jones is probably better off on a team that is well-rounded, but needs a unique player in their mix. Like you said I agree, the Rockets do not to draft anymore tweeners or project players.
This is spot on as far as his skills go. He's got the same skillset he had coming out of Duncan. I said 2 years ago he doesn't have it between the ears. Still feel the same way. He's not a leader. He just doesn't have the snap he needs to put that physical talent to it's ultimate use. It'll never happen for him.
