One more poll to prove it's not an outlier and we can thankfully put the black people are more likely to be homophobes meme to rest. Not because it hasn't been true, but because it is apparently changing. This change finally taking place in our society, across all demographics, makes me especially proud to be an American.

That's surprising. Didn't a bunch of black ministers just trash the NAACP on this issue?

Great to hear, and as batman pointed out, it goes against the current meme and press on the subject.

Another stereotype bashed (and I admit I actually believed in this one).

It wasn't really a stereotype - it was backed up by plenty of polling and voting evidence. As Batman pointed out, we probably need additional polling to confirm this new stance. But if it's real, then you can probably credit Obama's coming out and taking a stance on the issue for the change in the black community - or, depending on your perspective, blame his unwillingness to come out in favor earlier for the many losses the pro-gay-marriage side has suffered going back to 2008.

As has been pointed out, it may have well been true at one point, but this shows that things can change. Especially if a leader with a national bully pulpit can use it to sway opinion.

Let's see that reflected in actual voting before we start hailing the news.

If Republicans had just recognized sixty years ago that postwar blacks were as conservative as them, they could have taken the lead on Civil Rights, regained their vote and wouldn't need to deflect anti-gay blame now. Heck, the black leadership of the Civil Rights movement were preachers, war veterans and middle-class professionals; they might not have opposed Vietnam or supported women's rights down the road if they didn't feel indebted to young people, aging labor communists and women for legal, administrative and activist support.

I never thought for a minute that Obama would lose Black voters over gay marriage, at least not in significant numbers. Just more media chatter, anything to have an excuse not to cover OWS or other more serious issues.

The problem is the AA that go to the poll seem to be a bunch of bigots.

More signs pointing to a shift in African American opinions since the President spoke up:

    http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/12/05/black-voters-evolving-on-gay-marriage/257646/

In this case, it seems that Obama speaking in favor of marriage equality has not in fact turned too many African Americans against him, but has instead lead to more of a shift in black opinion in favor of marriage equality. What also helped is that other well-known African Americans (Jay Z, etc.) speaking in support of marriage equality after Obama "came out." Folks who got angry at Obama (like the Reverend Burns cited above) are under pressure to "evolve" their views or be left behind by history.

The shift in public opinion (among all communities) has been a gradual process, it does seem that the President's recent statement has created a jump in favor of marriage equality.
