How do you distinguish who is a star and who is not? Where does the star attribute stop? I would start there, and then ask which are attainable for the Rockets? If Gasol is not a star than is Ray Allen? Paul Pierce? Garnett? Amare? Where does it drop off?

    It did.

Think about the $$$$$$$ and attention that Rockets and Les got with Yao and TMAC on the team.

$$$$$ in the bank is always better than the rings.

This is still more or less what you call anecdotal evidence. Dallas beat the Heat soundly with only one true star but they were the better defensive team and the deeper team. So that route can (and has) beaten out the superstars. In fact I'd say the bigger factor is that veteran players win champioships. The more veteran team usually beats out the less experience team (barring injuries of course).

The Pacers are only marginally better than the Rockets they just enjoy being a playoff team because the East stinks. I fully expect the Spurs not only to beat OKC but they should beat Miami pretty handily too. If Miami can even get past Boston who predictably is playing very good basketball right now.

Morey and a lot of GM's will be seeking a star this summer. Many people were unhappy when three stars teamed up in Miami. There is a limit on stars and nowadays stars seem to be going to teams where there are other stars. Unless you get a star through the draft, there are going to be a group of "super teams" where teams have two to three stars. Then you will have teams like Denver, Philly that will stay on the preriphery with good coaching.

Um, not to rain on your parade but LBJ and Wade haven't won squat. Secondly, the Heat aren't just a 3-man show anymore, they have had solid contributions from Battier and co. all season long. Finally, LBJ isn't just a superstar, he's the most talented superstar in the entire world. Look at the all the other "superstar" tandems that crashed and burned this year like the Clips, NY and the Lakers.

So really, your thread proves nothign at all. The Spurs for example, have no superstar (TD is old and declining), but they've been sweeping teams left and right.

Superstars are worth way more nowadays due to teaming up And this shortage is screwing teams like us with depth because if we were to get one we would end up depleting out roster till having a star might not necessarily make us contenders. But with the influx of decent pgs I see that the best way of acquiring a star. Only Howard and Bynum would be something Houston would consider, there aren't any star wings getting freed up anytime soon which sucks.

Every GM in the NBA wants a superstar on his team.

What has Morey done to get a superstar on the Rockets? He has made this team mediocre so that we do not have an opportunity to get a top pick and acquire a potential superstar via the draft nor are attractive to superstar FAs who look to jump ships. Morey has failed if it's his mission to get a superstar on the Rockets.

Superstar is just another way of saying best player. Make a list of the dozen best players in the league. They are superstars.

wait so the Heat win 1 game in blowout fashion and now it's the way to win it all.. didn't the same heat lose to team ball last year in the mavs? which NBA team is undefeated thus far in the playoffs? oh yea the SPURS.. who play team ball…

come bump this when the heat DON"T win the title again this year.. the Spurs would sweep the heat if they played right now.. okc would win 4-2 over the heat. i expect the spurs to take it for their 5th title.. if anything we need to model how we run our franchise after the spurs before we do what the heat do..

Wow. Now I believe that Morey is really a genius! Imagine he is right about wanting a superstar. Nobody would have known that other than Morey, right?

Duncan put up 20-10 against the Clippers and Parker outplayed Paul...they meaning of 'superstar' is arbitrary but a team with stars who can do that don't really need to cross that line.

I am starting to believe part of the greatness of the Lakers organization is the delusion that everyone will be a Laker and everyone is possible to be on their team. I dont know if this is strictly a built in advantage from years of contending or fanbases delusions of contending every year is the only acceptable thing. We are about to test out if this fanbase is willing to let Morey slide at being mediocre for another year or whether the outcry will cause change or allow more mediocrity.
